OWNERS HANDBOOKThis handbook covers all current versions of the4.0 and 4.6 litre V8i petrol engineand 2.5 litrediesel engineRangeRover models and,together with theServicePortfolio book,provides all the information that you will need to derivemaximum pleasure from owning and driving your new vehicle.

For convenience, the handbook is divided into sections, each dealing with a particular aspect of drivingor caring for thevehicle. Sections are listed on the contents page and you will find it worthwhileto takea littletimeto read each one, and to get to know your Range Rover as soon as you possibly can.

Remember, the moreyou understand before you drive, thegreater thesatisfactionwhen you are seated behind thesteering wheel.

Most important of all, however, is thesectionon maintenance. This outlines theservicingrequirements for your RangeRover and alsoincorporates theservicerecord slips, whichtheDealer should sign and stamp to certifythat routineservices havebeen carriedout atthe recommended intervals.

Your vehicle has a higher ground clearance and, hence, a higher centre of gravity than ordinary passenger cars. This will result in different handling characteristics.Inexperienced drivers should take additional care, particularly in off-road driving situations and when performing abrupt manoeuvres on unstable surfaces.

VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN)If you need to communicatewith a Land

Rover dealer, you may beasked to quotetheVehicle Identification Number (VIN).

TheVIN (and recommended maximumvehicleweights) is stamped on a label fixed to thetoppanel abovethe left hand headlight (viewedfrom thedrivers seat). This should alsomatch theVIN recorded in theServicePortfolio book.

In addition, as a deterrent to car thieves and toassist the police, the VIN is alsostamped on aplatewhich is visible through the left sideofthe windscreen.

ANTI-THEFT PRECAUTIONSWhileit may bedifficult to deter the

professional car thief, themajority of theftsare carried out by unskilled opportunists.Therefore, takevehicle security very seriouslyand ALWAYS adopt this simple four pointdrill whenever you leaveyour vehicle- evenfor just afew minutes:

1. Fully closeall thewindows (and thesunroof).

2. Removeyour valuable belongings (or hidethem out of sight).

3. Remove the starter key.

4. Superlock thevehicleusing theremotehandset.

Thieves are attracted by vulnerable vehicles.Even if you havefollowed thefour point drill,there is still much you can do to makeyour

vehiclea less inviting target.BE SAFE - NOT SORRY!

Park where your vehiclecan beeasily seenby householders and passers-by.

At night, park in well lit areas and avoiddesertedor dimly-lit side streets.

At home, if you havea garage, use it - andNEVERleavethe keys in the vehicle.

Do not keep important documents (orspare keys) in thevehicle- theseare a realbonus for the thief.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Remember the breakdownsafety code

If a breakdown occurs while travelling:-

Wherever possible, consistent withroad safety and traffic conditions,thevehicle should bemoved off themain thoroughfare, preferably into alay-by. If a breakdown occurs on amotorway, pull well over to the

insideof thehard shoulder. Switch on hazard lights.

If possible, position a warningtriangle or a flashing amber light atan appropriatedistancefrom thevehicle to warn other traffic of thebreakdown. (Note the legalrequirements of some countries).

Consider evacuating passengersthrough nearsidedoors onto thevergeas a precautionshould yourRangeRover bestruck by anothervehicle.

Your vehicle is fitted with a sophisticatedelectronic anti-theft alarm and engine

immobilisation system. In order to ensuremaximumsecurity, you are advised to gain afull understanding of thesystem bythoroughly reading this section of thehandbook.

LOCKING THE VEHICLEAND ARMING THEALARM

You havebeen supplied with twohandset/keys (numbered 1 and 2). While bothare identical in operation, they transmit twodifferent sets of information (see Lazy seats).Replacement handsets are only availablefroma Land Rover dealer. Up to two furtherhandsets (3 and 4) can also beobtained.

There are four methods for securing yourvehicle:

1. Superlocking using the handset -(recommended high security method).

2. Superlocking using thekey.

3. Locking using thehandset.

4. Locking using thekey.

FOR MAXIMUM SECURITY, ALWAYSSUPERLOCK THEVEHICLE USING THE

HANDSET

(except when thevehicle is to belocked withpassengers or animals inside).


Emergency keysIn addition to the two handsets, you havealso been suppliedwith two separatekeys. Thesekeys perform thesamefunctions as thekey part of the handsetand are intended for emergencyuse only.DONOT keep thekeys inside thevehicle.

The handsetTheradio remotehandset has threebuttons.By pressing theappropriatebutton, thehandset can beused either as a conventionalkey, or as a remote handset to either lock orsuperlock the vehicle.

1. Press to releasethekey, which can thenbeused as a conventional key to operatethestarter switch, glovebox and doorlocks.

2. Lock button (padlock symbol)

press onceto lock.

press twice to superlock.

press and hold to lazy lock (see Lazy locking ).

3. Unlock button

press onceto unlock.

press and hold to operate thelazy seatfacility (see Lazy seats ).

Once thesecurity system is armed, thecentrallocking system locks all the doors and thetailgate, theperimetric alarm (protecting the

doors, bonnet and tailgate) is armed, and theengineis immobilised.

If handset superlocking is activated, thevolumetric alarm is also armed (a sensor

inside the passenger compartmentmonitors the interior spaceand activatesthe alarm if an intrusion into thepassenger compartment is detected).

Thevolumetric sensor will enter a self-checkmodeeach timeyou turn thestarter switchoff. It will remain activefor 60 seconds, oruntil:

1. Thedrivers door is opened and closed.2. Thevehicleis locked with thehandset or

key.

NOTE: If thesensor fails its self-checkfive times consecutively, only theperimetric elements of thesecurity system will beactive (doors, bonnet and tailgate). Any attempt to superlock with thehandset will result in

ALARM FAULT being displayed on the messagecentreand a mislock occurring(see Mislock). Seek qualified assistanceto rectify thefault.

Switching off the alarm sounderIf thealarm is triggered, it can be turned off inthreeways:

Press thelock button once.

Press theunlock button once. Turn the key in the drivers door to the

unlock position (towards thefront of thevehicle).

Anti-theft alarm indicator lightAfter locking thevehicle, theRED indicator

light (arrowed in illustration) flashes rapidlyfor ten seconds to confirm that thesecuritysystem has been successfully armed. After tenseconds, theindicator light adjusts to a slowerfrequency, and then continues to flash as ananti-theft deterrent until such timeas thesecurity system is disarmed.

If, while operating thehandset (or key), thealarm sounds, this indicates that oneof thedoors, thebonnet or the tailgate is notproperly closed (themessagecentre displaywill confirm which aperture is not secure).

Although the handset can besuccessfullyoperated from a significant distancefrom thevehicle, when locking it is wiseto be closeenough to visually confirm that thedoorlocking buttons havedropped into placeand

that theindicator light confirms a successfullock.

NOTE: Occasional atmospheric conditions can significantly reducetheeffectiverangeof handset operation. If this occurs, operatethe handset closer to thevehicle. In extreme cases, it may benecessary to touch the handset against theradio aerial fired onto

one of therear sidewindows.

SUPERLOCKINGIf thevehicle is superlocked (with either the

handset, or the key), the doors CANNOTbeunlocked or opened from inside thevehicle.

For this reasonDONOT superlock the vehiclewith passengers inside.

Superlocking using the handset: Press and releasethelock button (1) on thehandset twice(within 1 1 /

2seconds). After 15

seconds you will hear superlocking engage.

If any door, thebonnet or tailgate is left open,a mislock will occur (see Mislock ).

If a window or sunroof is open, superlockingwill engageimmediately, however volumetricprotection will not beactivated.

To unlock:

Press and releasetheunlock button (2) onthe handset once.

If thehandset is inoperative, thevehiclecanbeunlocked by using theemergency keyaccess code (see Emergency key access ).

Superlocking using the key: Wherever possible the handset MUST beused

to superlock thevehicle. However, if thehandset is inoperative, thekey can beused asfollows:

Turn the key in the drivers door towards therear of thevehicle(and release) twicewithin11 / 2 seconds.

NOTE: Superlocking thevehicleusing the key will provideperimetric protection only -

volumetric protection (protection of the interior spaceinside thevehicle) WILL NOT BEACTIVE! If any door, thebonnet, or the tailgate is left open, a mislock will occur (see Mislock).

To unlock: Wherever possibleuse the handset to unlockthevehicle- press and releasetheunlockbutton.

If necessary, thekey can beused to unlock asuperlocked vehicle, but before the enginecan bestarted, it will benecessary to releasetheengineimmobilisation function by enteringthe emergencykey access code(seeEmergency key access ).


If unattended passengers are to beleft inthevehicle, DONOT superlock.Unattended passengers should lock thevehicle from insideby pressing down thedrivers door sill button.

If animals are to beleft in thevehicle,volumetric protection MUST NOT beactivated - any movement insidethe

vehiclecould trigger thealarm.DONOT leavechildren unattended in thevehicle!

WARNING

NEVER superlock the vehicle if passengers

are to be left inside - superlocking prevents door locks from being operated from INSIDE as well as outside the vehicle!

NOTE: If thehandset lock button or the door key are operated once, thecentral locking will beactivated, but thealarm will only bein

perimetric modeand thedoors and locks CAN beopened from the inside. ALWAYS,where possiblesecure thevehicleby superlocking.

Sill lockingTo operate thecentral locking from insidethevehicle, push down either front door sillbutton.The security system will NOT be armed.

NOTE: Sill locking (also known as slam locking) is NOT possiblefrom outside the vehicle.

ENGINE IMMOBILISATIONEngine immobilisation is an important aspect

of theRangeRovers security system, andincludes a featureknown as passiveimmobilisation. This is designed to safeguardthevehiclefrom theft should thedriver forgetto lock thedoors. Theengineis automaticallyimmobilised whenever any of the followingconditions occur.

1. When thevehicle is locked using thehandset or key.

2. Thirty seconds after thestarter switch hasbeen turned off AND thedrivers dooropened.

3. Ten minutes after thestarter switch hasbeen turned off (even if thekey remains inthestarter switch and thedrivers doorhas not opened).


It is virtually impossible to leavethecarunattended or attended without theenginebeing immobilised automatically.For this reason it is important that alldrivers are fully awareof thefollowing:

Theengineis re-mobilised by pressingtheunlock button on thehandset orinserting thekey in thestarter switch.

If thehandset is lost or damaged and fails

to operate, theenginemust bere-mobilised by entering theemergencykey access codebefore thevehiclecan bedriven (seeEmergency key access).

EMERGENCY KEY ACCESSIf thehandset is lost or fails to operate, the

enginecan bere-mobilised by using thekey toenter a uniquefour digit emergencykeyaccesscode. Thecodeis recorded on theSecurity Information card and is entered asfollows:

1. Using the key, turn thedrivers door lock to theLOCKposition 4 times and return

the key to the centreposition(as shown) after each turn ofthe key. It is now possibleto use the key toenter the separatenumerical values of the fourdigits that makeup theemergency key accesscode.


When entering a code:

ENSUREeach key movement iscarried out with care and precisionand turned through thefull extent ofits travel.

After turning thekey to either thelock or unlock positions, makesureit is FULLY returned to thecentre(vertical) position.

If you forget your placein thesequenceof key operations and,therefore, do not complete a code,open and then shut thedoor andstart entering thecodeagain (thiswill not count as a failedattempt).

2. Enter the FIRST digit ofthe code. If the first digit is 4,turn thekey to theUNLOCKposition 4 times. Ensurethekey is FULLY returned to the

centreposition after each turn of the key.

3. Enter the SECOND digit ofthe code. If thesecond digit is3, turn the key to the LOCKposition 3 times. Remember;the key must beFULLY

returned to thecentreposition after each turnof thekey.

4. Enter the THIRD digit ofthe code. If thethird digit is2, turn the key to the UNLOCKposition twice, ensuring thatthekey is FULLY returned to

thecentreposition after each turn of thekey.

5. Enter the FOURTH digit ofthe code. If thefourth digit is1, turn the key to the LOCKposition once. Ensurethekeyis FULLY returned to the

centreposition after thekey has been turned.

6. FINALLY,turn the key tothe UNLOCK position oncemore to disarm the alarm andre-mobilisetheengine. If thecodehas been entered

successfully, the anti-theft alarm indicatorlight will extinguish, thedoors will unlock andtheenginecan bestarted.

NOTE: During theaccess procedure, the anti-theft indicator light will continue to flash

(indicating that thealarm is still partially armed).

NOTE: If thehandset is inoperable, the emergency key access codemust beentered EVERY time you need to start theengine.

If an incorrect code has been entered: If the codehas been entered incorrectly, theanti-theft alarm indicator light will continue toflash. In this case, return to 1 and re-enterthe code.

After three failedentry attempts, thesecuritysystem invokes a delay period of thirtyminutes during which thesystem will notaccept any further attempts to enter a code.

WARNING

NEVER leave the Security Information card in the vehicle.

Memorise the emergency key access code or keep the Security Information card on your person in case of emergencies (a damaged handset for example).

MISLOCKA mislock will occur if:

A door, bonnet or tailgate are left open. Thekey is left in thestarter switch.

An incomplete lazy lock is attempted. Themessagecentrewill indicate thecauseof amislock e.g. SUNROOFBLOCKED.

If a mislockoccurs, a warning bleep willsound in which caseyou should unlock thevehicle, rectify thecauseof themislock andthen re-lock thevehicle.

LAZY LOCKINGLazy locking enables you to use thehandsetor key to closethewindows and sunroof atthesametimeas you secure thevehicle.

To operate lazy locking:

1. Ensure thedoors, bonnet and tailgate areproperly closed.

2. With thehandset - press and hold thelock button (press twice and hold on thesecond press if superlocking).With the key - turn and hold the key in thelock position.

Thedoors and tailgatewill lock and thewindows, followed by thesunroof will close.

NOTE: If a window or thesunroof detects an obstruction, a mislock occurs and thelocking sequencewill stop. Remove the obstruction before trying to lazy lock again.

LAZY SEATSThelazy seat facility is availableonly on

vehicles fitted with a drivers seat memory.Thefacility enables thehandsets to beused torecall thepre-set electric seat/mirror positionswhen you UNLOCK thedoor. Thetwohandsets are separately identifiedby differentlabels and by grey and black battery covers -key 1 corresponds to drivers seat memory 1,and key 2 to seat memory 2 (see Seats ).

NOTE: If additional handset/keys havebeen obtained (key 3 and key 4), they are not linked to thememory seat system.

Press and hold theunlock button on thehandset for 1 1 / 2 seconds (the indicator lighton thehandset flashes rapidly), and thenrelease. Thedrivers seat and both mirrors willmoveto thepositions programmed into therelevant seat memory.

NOTE: Lazy seats will only operate if volumetric protection was activated when the vehiclewas locked (ie. by superlocking using the handset).It will not function if thealarm system has already been triggered since it was last set,and will becancelled if a door is opened, or if thevehicleis relocked.

AUTORELOCKAuto relock ensures that, if thevehicle is

unlocked accidentally, the vehiclewill relockitself automatically after a60 second delay.

Once theunlock button on thehandset hasbeen pressed, thealarm system will monitorthevehicle for 60 seconds. If any of thefollowing occur during this period, thevehiclewill remain unlocked:

A door or thetailgate is opened.

Interior movement is detected. Thekey is inserted into thestarter switch,

or the switch is turned to position I.

However, if none of the abovehas occurredwithin 60 seconds, then thevehiclewillautomatically return to its previous lockedstate.

CHILD-PROOF LOCKS(rear doors only)Movethe lever downwards (arrowed inillustration) to engage.

With thechild-proof locks engaged, thereardoors cannot beopened from inside thevehicle, therebyavoiding therisk of a doorbeing opened accidentally while thevehicleismoving.

Opening the doorsWhen opening a door from outside thevehicle, it is recommended that themovingpart of the handle is held by thefingers andthat thedoor catch is operated by pushingwith thethumb against the fixed part of thehandle.

INERTIA CUT-OFF SWITCHThis switch is a safety device thatautomatically unlocks thedoors in theeventof an accident or sudden impact (provided thestarter switch is turned on). In addition, theinertia switch inhibits power to theelectricfuel pump, turns off the heating and airconditioning fans, and turns on thehazardwarning lights, which continueflashing untileither thestarter switch is turned off or theinertia switch is reset.

Theswitch is located behind thevertical panelin theright hand footwell. Removethecoverby using a coin to rotate the turnbuckleanti-clockwiseand then prisethecover off.

When theswitch is tripped, themessagecentrewill alternately display; REFER

HANDBOOK and INERTIA SWITCH.To reset the switch, press therubber top(arrowed in illustration).

NOTE: Thevehiclecan besecured even if the switch has been tripped by removing the starter key, opening and closing one of the front doors and then locking thevehicle.

WARNINGAlways check for fuel leaks before resetting the switch!

Handset batteries

When thebatteriesneed replacing, themessagecentre will display KEY BATTERYLOW. To replace:

Removethebattery cover by turning thecover anti-clockwisewith a coin.

Taking care not to touch thecircuit board,prise thebatteries from thecover and fitnew ones (with the positiveside facing the

cover), and replacethecover.Thebatteriesshould bereplaced within 1minuteof removing theold ones, otherwise itmay benecessary to re-synchronisethehandset (see Handset synchronisation ). Newbatteriesare availablefrom your dealer.

NOTE: Finger marks on thebatterieswill adversely affect battery life. If possible, avoid

touching thesurfaceof thebatteries, and wipe clean before fitting.

Handset synchronisationThehandset transmits a coded message,

which changes each timea button is pressed.If a handset is operated too many times out ofrangeof the vehicleor if the handset batteriesare removed for longer than a minute, it mayneed to bere-synchronised.

To synchronise: Insert thehandset key into thestarter switch;the handset will then beresynchronised.

NOTE: Handset synchronisation cannot be achieved if thevehiclealarm is armed or if the handset batteries need replacing.

OPENING THE TAILGATEWith thevehicleunlocked, press thereleasebutton onceto releasetheupper tailgate.

NOTE: There is a handle built into thelower edgeof the upper tailgate to assist in opening

and closing.With theupper tailgate open, press thereleasebutton again to releasethe lower tailgate,which can then belowered to thehorizontalposition.

NOTE: Thetailgate cannot beopened if the vehiclebattery is flat or disconnected. If this occurs, access to theloadspacecan only be

achieved by folding therear seats from inside the vehicle (see Seats).

CLOSING THE TAILGATERaisethe lower tailgate first and closefirmly.

Then lower and closethe upper tailgate.

WARNING

Do not drive with the tailgate open; poisonous carbon monoxide fumes will enter the vehicle.

Always check that the tailgate is secure before driving and before leaving the

vehicle unattended.

Driver warning and information messages aredisplayed on themessagecentre in the lowerpart of the instrument pack. Messages havedifferent priority levels and are grouped intothe following categories.

CRITICAL WARNINGSCritical warning messages are accompaniedby an audiblewarning (threebeeps).Messages are displayed continuously whilethestarter switch is turned on, and remaindisplayed while thefault persists.

DONOT ignore thesemessages - TAKECORRECTIVEACTION IMMEDIATELY!

Critical warnings are displayed continuously,normally on thelower lineof the messagecentre, but if more than one messageis to bedisplayed, then theupper display line will also

beused.WARNINGS

Warning messages are non-critical, but mustbetreated with someurgency. They will alsobeaccompanied by an audiblewarning (threebeeps) each timethe messageis displayed.

DONOT ignore thesemessages - TAKECORRECTIVEACTION IMMEDIATELY.

Warning messages are displayed forapproximately 4 seconds. If other warningmessages are pending, thedisplay timewill bereduced to approximately 2 seconds.

INFORMATION MESSAGESGeneral

DRIVERS SEAT/MIRRORS MEMORYFACILITY

NOTE: Not all electric seat installations includetheseat and mirror memory facilities.

WARNING

Before activating the seat/mirror memory,ensure that the area immediately surrounding the seats is clear of obstructions.

Your vehiclecan memorisetwo differentdriver seating and mirror positions. To store

thepositions in thesystem memory, thestarter switch must be turned to eitherposition I or II and thetransmission mustNOT bein reversegear.

Set thedrivers seat and both door mirrors totherequired positions and store thesettingsby pressingand holding the SEAT MEMORYswitch together with either switch 1 or 2, for 2seconds. MEMORY 1 STORED or MEMORY2 STORED will bedisplayed on themessagecentreto confirm thestoring action.

To recall your stored position after the seat ormirrors havebeen moved by another driver,press and hold theappropriateswitch ( 1 or2); the seat and mirrors will return to theposition stored by that memory switch. Oncethey havereached their memory positionsa

tone will sound to confirm that theoperationis complete.

NOTE: If thememory positionsare stored whilst the lights are on, theillumination level of the instrument panel will also bestored in the memory.

Drivers seat one-touch operationTheone-touch function is operated by briefly

pressing therelevant memory switch (1 or 2).Theseat will then automatically moveto thememory position.

Onetouch operation can becancelled at anytimeby pressing either of thememoryswitches or any of theseat axis switches.Pressingeither of the seat memory switchesstops all movement immediately: pressingoneof theaxis switches cancels thememory seatmovement but starts theseat moving in thedirection of theswitch which is pressed.Releasetheswitch to stop all movement.

Folding the rear seatsOneor both parts of thesplit rear seat can beeither partially folded to providea usefulhorizontal surfaceor fully folded to furtherincreasethe rear loadspace.

Before folding either part of therear seat,ensure that the outer rear seat belts arecorrectly stowed in their belt clips (seeillustration). To avoid damaging thecentreseat belt, roll thebuckle neatly and stow it inthespaceprovided at its anchor point in the

centre of therear seat.To fold either part of therear seat, press theappropriatereleasebutton A, then fold thebackrest down to position 1. To furtherincreasethe loadspace, fold thebackrest andseat basetogether to position 2.

When returning therear seat to its normalposition, ensurethat thebackrest is securely

latched in placebeforedriving.NOTE: If the seat baseis not fully latched in position it will not be possibleto raisethe backrest.

WARNING

When the seat is erected, the latching mechanism should be visually checked and physically tested to ensure that the latch is secure before driving.

Seat belts are life-saving equipment.

In a collision, unrestrained passengers canbe thrown around inside the vehicle, orpossibly thrown out of the vehicle, resultingin injury to themselves and to otheroccupants. DO NOT take chances withsafety!

DOmakesurethat ALL passengers aresecurely strapped in at all times; even forthe shortest journeys.

ALWAYS adjust seat belts to eliminate anyslack in thewebbing and to ensurethatthe diagonal belt passes across theshoulder without slipping off or pressingon theneck.

ALWAYS fit the lap belt strap as low onthehips as possible (never across theabdomen).

DONOT slacken thewebbing by pullingthe belt away from the body - to be fullyeffective, theseat belt must remain in fullcontact with thebody at all times.

DOhaveseat belts checked if thevehicleisinvolved in an accident.

DONOT allow occupants to travel with theseat backs reclinedsteeply rearwards.Optimum benefit is obtained from theseatbelt with theseat back angle set to 15degrees from theupright (vertical)position.

DONOT allow foreign matter (particularlysugary food or drink particles) to enter theseat belt locks; such substances canrender theseat belt locks inoperative.

Pregnant women should ask a doctor foradviceabout thesafest way to wear seatbelts.

WARNING

Ensure that all seat belts are worn correctly - an improperly worn seat belt increases the risk of death or serious injury in the event of an accident.

The airbag supplementary restraint system (SRS) (where fitted) is designed to add to the overall effectiveness of the seat belts, it DOES NOT replace them. SEAT BELTS MUST ALWAYS BE WORN.

Fastening lap beltsTherear central seating position is fitted witha lap belt. To adjust, pull the slider (arrowed inillustration) along thebelt and feed thewebbing through thebuckle until thebelt iscomfortably tight. Insert themetal tongueplate into thelock nearest to thecentreof thevehicle.

Infant and child restraintsAll infant and child restraint systems aredesigned to besecured in vehicle seats bymeans of a lap belt or the lap portion of alap/shoulder belt.

When installingand using any infant or childrestraint system, always follow themanufacturers instructions. Failuretoproperly secure thechild restraint system canendanger thechild in a collisionor suddenstop and cause injury to other passengers.

Thecentrerear seating position is fitted with alap belt which can bemanually tightened tosecure an infant or child restraint system.Older children should use the lap/shoulderbelt fitted to theouter rear seating positions.Never leave a child unattended in yourvehicle.

Theabovesymbol affixed to thefascia panelof your vehicle, warns against the use of a

REAR FACINGchild seat in the frontpassenger seat, when a passenger airbag isfitted. This type of child seat could causeserious injury to your child in theevent of anairbag deployment.

WARNING

Infants and children too small for seat belts

should be restrained in a child safety seat or restraint system appropriate to their age and/or size, and which is approved for use in your vehicle. Always ensure that the manufacturers fitting instructions are followed exactly.

DO NOT allow a baby or infant to be carried on the lap. The force of a crash can increase effective body weight by as much as 30 times, making it impossible to hold on to the child.

DO NOT use a child seat that hooks over a seat back, it is not secure!

Accident statistics show that children are safer when properly restrained in the rear seating positions than in the front.However, if a forward facing child seat suitable for the size of child is available and it is necessary for a child to travel in the front, set the seat fully rearwards and use an approved FORWARD FACING child seat - DO NOT INSTALLREARWARD FACING CHILD SEATS IN ANY FRONT PASSENGER SEAT POSITION.

Caring for seat beltsRegularly inspect thebelt webbing for signs of

fraying, cuts and wear, also paying particularattention to thecondition of thefixing pointsand adjusters.

DONOT bleach or dyethe webbing. Clean thewebbing using warm water and non-detergentsoap only; allow to dry naturally and DONOTretract the belts or usethevehicleuntil theyare completely dry.

Testing inertia reel seat belts

From time to timecarry out the followingtests:

1. With theseat belt fastened, give thewebbing near thebuckle a quick upwardpull. Thebuckle must remain securelylocked.

2. With theseat belt fastened, sit back in the

seat and ensure any slack has beenrewound. Then movethe upper bodysharply forward from the hips - themechanism must lock automatically andprevent any further unreeling of the belt.

3. With theseat belt unfastened, unreel thewebbing to thelimit of its travel. Checkthat unreeling is freefrom snatches andsnags.

If a seat belt should fail any of thesetests,contact your dealer immediately.

WARNING

Always replace a seat belt that has withstood the strain of an impact or shows signs of fraying.

Theairbag supplementary restraint system (SRS) provides additionalprotection for the driver, and front seat passenger, in theevent of asevere frontal impact on the vehicle.

Always remember: the airbag is a supplementary restraint system that provides ADDITIONALprotection in a frontal impact only; it does NOT replace the need to wear a seat belt. Formaximum safety protection in all crash situations, a seat belt must be worn.

In theevent of a collision involving a frontalimpact, theairbag control unit crash sensormonitors thedeceleration caused by theimpact and determines whether the airbagSRS should beactivated.

If the impact is sufficiently severe, thesystemcauses each airbag to inflate. Inflation is

instantaneous and accompanied by a loudnoise. Also evident, may betraces of smokeand powder, which do not indicateamalfunction of theairbag. An airbag will notinflate as a result of heavy braking, minorbumps or pot holes.

After inflation, the airbags will immediatelydeflate, thereby ensuring that visibility is notimpaired.

WARNING

Following inflation some airbag SRS components are hot - DO NOT touch until they have cooled.

Even with an airbag SRS fitted, seat belts must ALWAYS be worn because: Airbags will only provideadditional

protection in severe frontalcollisions. No protection is affordedagainst the effects of sideor rearimpacts, roll over accidents or minorfrontal impacts.

Inflation and deflation takeplaceinstantaneously and will not provideprotection against theeffects ofsecondary impacts that can occurduring multiplevehiclecollisions.

The airbag module inflates withconsiderable speed and force. For yoursafety:

NEVER attach accessory items to anairbag module cover, or placeitemsof hand luggageor any objects ontop of a modulecover; thesecouldinterferewith theinflation of theairbag, or if theairbag inflates, bepropelledinside thevehiclecausinginjury to theoccupants.

DONOT allow occupants to obstructtheoperation of theairbag modules

by placing their feet, knees or anyother part of their person in contactwith, or in closeproximity to, anairbag modulewhile thevehicle is inmotion.

CHILDSEATS: Do not use a rearfacing child seat in thefrontpassenger seat. Theinflating airbagcould impact with theseat causinginjury to the child. If it is necessaryfor a child to travel in the front, setthe seat fully rearwards and ONLYuse an approved FORWARDFACINGchild seat.

Airbag SRS warning lightA warning light, mounted on theinstrument pack, will alert you to anymalfunction which might prevent theairbag SRS from operating correctly intheevent of a frontal impact. Thesystemshould always bechecked by a dealer if

any of thefollowing symptoms occur: Thewarning light fails to illuminate

when thestarter switch is turned toposition II.

Thewarning light fails to extinguishwithin approximately eight secondsafter the starter switch is turned toposition II.

Thewarning light illuminates orflashes while thevehicle is beingdriven.

NOTE: After thestarter switch is turned to position II, thesystems diagnostic control unit checks its own memory and thewarning light bulb for faults. If a fault is found, thewarning light will pulse.

To ensureabsolutesafety, thiswork must ONLYbecarried out by a LandRover dealer, who should stamp and sign theappropriatepageof the Owner Information &ServiceRecord book oncethework iscomplete.

In addition, ALWAYS contact your dealer if:

an airbag inflates.

thefront of thevehicleis damaged, even iftheairbag has not inflated.

any part of an airbag module cover (thesteering wheel centre pad or thepassenger sidefasciapanel) shows signsof cracking or damage.

WARNING

Do NOT attempt to service, repair, replace or modify any part of the airbag SRS; tampering could cause inadvertent activation of the system resulting in personal injury.


Thecomponents that makeup the airbagSRS are sensitiveto electrical or physicalinterference, either of which could easilydamagethe system and causeinadvertentoperation or a malfunction of theairbagmodule.

ALWAYS seek theassistanceof a LandRover dealer to carry out any of thefollowing:

Removal or repair of any wiring orcomponent in thevicinity of any oftheSRS components (yellow wiringharness), including: thesteeringwheel, steering column, instrumentand fasciapanels.

Installation of electronic equipmentsuch as a mobile telephone,two-way radio or in-carentertainment system.

Attachment of accessories to thefront of thevehicle.

Modification to thefront of thevehicle.

In addition:If you sell your RangeRover, besure to

inform thenew owner that the vehicle hasan airbag SRS, and makethenew owneraware of the airbag module replacementdate shown in theOwner Information &ServiceRecord book.

If thevehicle is to bescrapped: uninflatedairbags are potentially very dangerousand must besafely deployed in acontrolled environment BEFOREa vehicleis scrapped.

ELECTRICALLY-OPERATED DOOR MIRRORS

1. Slidetheswitch left or right to select theappropriatemirror.

NOTE: If your vehiclehas an electrically-operateddrivers seat, then the positions of the mirrors can be set in conjunction with thedrivers seat positions (seeSeats).

NOTE: Door mirrors haveintegral heating elements which disperseiceor mist from the glass. This function operates continuously while theengineis running.

Automatic dipping for reverse gear selection(if fitted)

Vehicles with a drivers seat memory haveapre-stored function which causes themirrorsto dip automatically whenever reversegear isselected. If necessary themirror positions canbealtered as follows:

1. Turn the starter switch to position I or II(do not start theengine).

2. Select reverse gear.

3. Adjust either or both mirrors to thedesiredpositions.

4. Press the seat MEMORY STOREswitchtogether with either switch 1 or 2(whichever corresponds with thedriversseat memory) for 2 seconds (themessagecentre displays MIRRORDIP STORE).

To disable the dip function: Turn the starter switch to position I or II (do

not start theengine) and select reversegear.Pressand hold the seat MEMORY STOREswitch for 2 seconds and themessagecentredisplays MIRRORDIP OFF and a tonesounds.

To restore the dip function: Turn the starter switch to position I or II (donot start the engine), and select reversegear.

Press and hold the MEMORY STOREswitchfor 2 seconds and themessagecentrebrieflydisplays the messageMIRRORDIP ON(returning mirrors to, either the factory oryour own pre-set positions).

Manual adjustmentEach door mirror assembly can bemovedthrough four positions.

Thefully forward and rearward positionsenablethemirror body to fold almost flatagainst thesideof the vehicleand are usefulfor negotiating narrow openings. 6. Temperature gaugeOnce theenginecoolant has reached itsnormal operating temperature the pointershould bealmost vertical (theprecisepositionwill vary depending on theambienttemperature). If the pointer moves towardstheREDsegment a RED warning light in thetemperature gauge illuminates. Should thepointer moveINTOthered segment, stop thevehicleas soon as safety permits and seekqualified assistancebefore continuing.

7. Fuel gaugeThepointer drops to zero when thestarterswitch is turned off, but quickly rises to show

the level of fuel in the tank when the switch isturned to position II. After refuelling, thegaugerapidly changes to reflect the increaseof fuel in thetank.

NOTE: Thegaugemay not indicate fuel level increases of 15 litres or less.

When the fuel remaining in the tank is aminimum of 9 litres, theAMBER warning lightwill illuminate. If the light illuminates, refuel atthefirst opportunity.

Fuel tank capacity is approximately:

Petrol engines: 100 usable litresDiesel engines: 90 usablelitres

WARNING

NEVER allow your vehicle to run out of fuel (the resultant misfire may destroy the catalytic converter).

Handbrake/brake system - RED.Illuminates for 3 seconds as a

bulb check when thestarterswitch is turned to position II and alsoilluminates when thehandbrakeis appliedandthe starter switch is in position II.

Thelight should extinguishwhen thehandbrakeis fully released or after thebulbcheck if the handbrakeis off. If the lightilluminates whilst driving, a fault is indicated.Stop thevehicleas soon as safety permits andseek qualified assistancebefore continuing.

NOTE: If thevehiclehas been standing for some time, it may take up to 40 seconds before thelight extinguishes (in this case, ABS and TCwarning lights will also be illuminated).

Catalyst - RED (JAPAN only).Illuminates for 3 seconds as abulb check when thestarter

switch is turned to position II, it alsoilluminates if thecatalytic converter overheats.If thelight does not extinguish after the bulbcheck, or illuminates whilst driving, slowdown and then stop the vehicleas soon assafety permits. Seek qualified assistancebefore continuing.

Glow plug - AMBER.(Diesel only).Illuminates when thestarter

switch is turned to position II. WAITfor thelight to extinguishbeforestaring theengine.

Seatbelt - RED.Thelight illuminates for 6

seconds when the starter switchis turned to position II. ALWAYS fasten yourseat belt BEFOREdriving.

Battery charging - RED.Illuminates as a bulb check whenthe starter switch is turned to

position II and extinguishes when theengineis running. If it remains on or illuminateswhen driving, a fault is indicated. Seekqualified assistanceurgently.

Trailer direction indicators -GREEN.This light is only operativewhen

a trailer is connected to the vehicleviaamulti-pin socket. Thelight flashes inconjunction with thevehicledirectionindicators, thus confirming that thetrailer

indicator lights are operating correctly. In theevent of the failure of a trailer directionindicator light, thewarning light will notilluminate.

Low engine oil pressure - RED.Illuminates as a bulb check whenthe starter switch is turned to

position II, and extinguishes when theengineis running. If it remains on when the engineisstarted, or comes on during a journey, stopthevehicleas soon as safety permits and seekqualified assistancebefore continuing. Alwayscheck oil levels when this light illuminates.

NOTE: At very low ambient temperatures the light may takeseveral seconds to extinguish.

ABS - YELLOW.This light illuminates for

approximately 1 second when thestarter switch is turned to position II, andthen briefly extinguishes beforecoming onagain. If thelight does not extinguishand thenilluminateagain then a fault has occurredwiththeABS system and you should consult yourLand Rover dealer at theearliest opportunity.Thewarning light will remain illuminated untilthevehicleis driven aboveapproximately

7 km/h.If the light remains illuminated orsubsequently illuminates whilst driving, a faulthas been detected by theself-monitoringsystem. Themessagecentre will display ABSFAULT; this means that full ABS control maynot beavailable, and you should consult yourdealer at theearliest opportunity.

Airbag SRS - RED.Thelight illuminates when thestarter switch is turned to

position II, and extinguishes afterapproximately 8 seconds. If the lightilluminates at any other time, a fault isindicated (see Airbag SRS). Seek qualifiedassistanceurgently.

Transfer gearbox - AMBER.Thelight starts flashing when theHi/Lo switch is pressed (manual

gearbox vehicles), or when the selector leveris moved across theH-gate (automaticgearbox vehicles), and continues flashinguntilthe transfer gearbox has completed a changefrom one rangeof gears to another.

On manual gearbox vehicles, DONOT release

theclutch or select agear until thelight stopsflashing. On automatic gearbox vehicles, DONOTreleasethebrakes or driveuntil the lightstops flashing.

Traction control (TC) - AMBER.Illuminates for threesecondsafter the starter switch is turned

on and theABS and traction control systemshavecompleted their self-checks.

Whilst driving, theTClight will illuminate(fora minimum of two seconds) whenevertraction control is active; thelightextinguishing as soon as traction controlceases. Thelight flashing (for at least tenseconds) indicates that the systemhas been

over-used; it will beavailableagain oncethesystem components havecooled.

If the light illuminates continuously, a faultwith thesystem is indicated; seek qualifiedassistance.

Direction indicators - GREEN.Theleft or right warning lightflashes in time with the

corresponding left or right direction indicatorswhenever they are operated. A warning lightflashing at twice the normal speed indicatesthat a direction indicator bulb has failed (themessagecentrewill indicate which bulb isfaulty). If a trailer is connected and a rearindicator bulb fails then themessagewill notbedisplayed. When thehazard switch ispressed, both warning lights will illuminate in

conjunction with the indicator lights.

Headlight main beam - BLUE.This light illuminates whenever

themain beam headlights are on.Lights on - GREEN.This light illuminates when thesidelights and/or headlights are

switched on. It will not illuminatewhenparking lights or headlight delay are inoperation.

Air suspension - AMBERIlluminates as a bulb check whenthestarter switch is turned on

and remains illuminated until two secondsafter theenginehas started.

In addition, thelight will illuminatewhilstdriving whenever High or Extended rideheights are selected, and also if a fault withthe air suspensionsystemis detected.

AUDIBLE WARNINGSIn somemarkets one or moreof the followingaudiblewarningsmay beincluded in thevehiclespecification.

Starter key warningAn audiblewarning sounds if the key is left inthestarter switch when thedrivers door is

opened if theengineis not running. It willceaseas soon as thekey is removed or thedrivers door is closed.

This is accompanied by themessagecentredisplaying IGNITIONKEY IN.

Lights on warningAn audiblewarning sounds if thedrivers door

is opened whilst theheadlights are turned onand after thekey is removed from thestarterswitch. It will ceaseas soon as the lights areswitched off or when thedrivers door isclosed. Thewarning is accompanied by themessagecentredisplaying LIGHTS ON.

Drivers seat belt reminderA continuous audible warning sounds and themessagecentredisplays SEATBELT PLEASEfor a 6 second period or until theseat belt islatched.

Excess speed warningA continuous audible warning soundswhenever the vehiclespeed exceedsapproximately 120 km/h and ceases as soonas thevehicle speed falls below 120 km/h.This is accompanied by themessagecentre

displayingSPEEDLIMIT 120. This function isindependent of the trip computer overspeedfunction - (see Trip computer for furtherinformation).

High/Low range change warningAn audiblewarning will sound whilst a changefrom one gear range to another is attempted.Thewarning will ceaseoncethechange iscomplete or is cancelled.

To flash theheadlights, pull thelever part-waytoward thesteering wheel (to thefirstposition) and release.

Parking lightsWith the lighting switch in position 1 and thestarter key removed, movethe directionindicator lever fully DOWNto illuminate theleft hand sideand tail lights or UP toilluminate theright hand sideand tail lights(lights on both sides will remain on if the leveris in its CENTRAL position). To switchoff,turn the lighting switch to position 0.

Instrument dimmer controlRotate therocker switch to theleft or right to

reduceor increasethe intensity of instrumentpanel illumination. Thedimmer also controlsthe illumination level of switches and (wherefitted) theintensity of theair conditioning LCDdisplay.

Theinstrument dimmer also controls theintensity of the messagecentre display.However, note that if the illumination level isset to its maximum(rotate rocker switch totheright and hold), then a momentary pressof the rocker switch to the left will dim themessagecentre display, but leavetheinstrument illumination at maximum.

NOTE: On vehicles fitted with power operated memory seats, if theside lights are switched on when a drivers seat position is stored in theseat memory, then theillumination level of

the instrument panel will bestored at the sametime.

the starter switch is turned to position I orII.

WARNING

To prevent possible overload damage to the

linkage or the wiper motors in either freezing or extremely hot conditions, care must be taken to ensure that the wiper blades are not adhering to the glass before operating the wipers.

FRONT SCREENTo operate thefront screen wipers only, thelever must bepushed away from thesteeringwheel.

Single wipeRaisethe lever to position 1 and release.

Intermittent wipeLower the lever to position 2 to engageintermittent wipe. Rotate the thumb wheel leftor right to reduceor increasethedelaybetween wipes.

Normal/fast speed wipeLower the lever to position 3 for normal; andto position 4 for fast continuous wipespeed.

REAR SCREENPull the lever towards thesteering wheel for

rear screen intermittent wipe.All front wiper functions are also available inthis position, using thefour positionsdescribed on the previouspage.

If thefront wipers are operating in intermittentmodethen therear wiper will wipeon everysecond operation of thefront wipers. If thefront wipers are operating in continuous

mode, then thethumbwheel controls thedelayof therear wiper.

WINDSCREEN WASHER

Front screen wash/wipePress and hold thelower button to operate thefront screen wash/wipe. Thewashers willcontinueoperating for as long as thebutton ispressed. After releasingthebutton, thewipers

will complete 3 full wipes beforeeitherparking or continuing with any other selectedwiper function.

A momentary press on thelower button willinitiatea programmed wash/wipe. Thewashers will operate briefly and then stopautomatically, thewipers then completing 3full wipes before either parking or continuingwith another function. Moving thelever to anyother front wipeposition during theprogrammed wash/wipewill cancel theremainder of theprogramme.

NOTE: If thewiper system senses a low fluid level in thewasher reservoir, then the programmed wash/wipewill only operate for as long as the button is pressed, i.e. therewill beno timed wash and no additional 3 wipes.

Washer jetsTo adjust the front screen washer jets, insert a

needle into the jet orificeand useit to positionthejet so that the spray is directed towardsthe horizontal centre lineof thewindscreen.

If the jets becomeobstructed, a needleorstrand of wirecan beused to clear theblockage.

Rear screen wash/wipe

Press and hold theupper button to operatethe rear screen wash/wipe. Thewasher willcontinueoperating for as long as thebutton ispressed. After releasingthebutton, thewiperwill complete 3 full wipes beforeeitherparking or continuing with any other selectedfunction.

A momentary press on theupper button willinitiatea programmed wash/wipe. Thewasherwill operatebriefly and then stopautomatically, thewiper then completing 3 fullwipes beforeeither parking or continuing withanother function. Moving thelever to anyother rear wipeposition during theprogrammed wash/wipewill cancel theremainder of theprogramme.

Therear wiper will operateautomaticallywhenever reversegear is selected, provided

thefront screen wipers are operating in eitherintermittent, or continuous mode.

Headlight wash/wipe (if fitted)Headlight wash/wipeis controlled by a timerunit, and operates automatically on everysecond wash of thefront screenwash systemwhen theheadlights are switched on.

NOTE: If thewiper system registers a low

screen wash fluid level the headlight wash/wipewill not operateat all.

Low screen wash fluidWhen thescreen wash level is low, themessagecentredisplays LOWSCREENWASH. Themessageappears whenever thefront or rear wash/wipesystems are used andis also activated whenever thestarter switch isturned to, or from, position II. To reset thesystem thereservoir must be filled when thestarter switch is turned off (see Windscreen washer top-up ).

are switched on. Therear fog guard lights will

operate only when thestarter switch is inposition II, and when either:

theheadlights are switched on, or

thesidelights and front fog lights areswitched on.

Note that the fog guard lights will have to bereselected if theheadlights or sidelights andfront fog lights havebeen turned off.

REMEMBER:In clear conditions rear fogguard lights can dazzle other road users. Useonly when visibility is severely restricted.

Hazard warning lightsPress to operate; all thedirectionindicators, including thosefitted

to a trailer, will flash in conjunction with eachother.

UseONLYin an emergency to warn otherroad users when your stationary vehicleiscausing an obstruction, or is in a hazardoussituation. Remember to switch off beforemoving away.
