Introduction
The NORD SK9055 and SK9155 Conveyor Drive reducers are designed to be a mounting flange and output shaft drop-in for existing Overhead Conveyor Drives. The NORD Conveyor Drives, like our standard industrial products,offer heavy-duty construction and precisely machined components. By adding a mounting pad, the standardNORD unit becomes an intelligent drop-in product.
These drives also incorporate the standard NORD VLIII flange, which features a larger bearing span and a dry cavity.
RatingsNORD uses the standard gearing and housings for these Conveyor Drives. By doing this, we are able to offer the wide range of ratios, high torque, overhung and thrust load capacities.

UNICASE™ Construction UNICASE™ Construction refers to an overall design concept used in all NORD’s products. The criticalcharacteristics to reducer performance are proper alignment of the gear meshes and the bearings. All the main components are contained in a one-piece housing. All bearing bores, pilots, and registers of the housing aremachined in one setup. By manufacturing with this method, the accuracy of the housing is based only on theaccuracy of the machine that made them. This assures positive bearing and gear alignment.
In no case is a bearing bore split axially, even if it is internal to the reducer. Designs with split bearing boresrequire bolts to hold the bore together. It is common for bearings to fail, due to the outer race being improperlysupported and causing a stress riser at seams in bearing bores.

Coupling Input For Flange Mount Motors NORD supplies reducers with special couplings that eliminate the need for quill-typeinput with NEMA and IEC frame motors. This allows for superior input shaft alignmentand smooth torque transfer, reducing incidents of bearing, shaft and key failures.Smaller reducers use a proprietary one-piece coupling. This is a nylon curved toothgear coupling with a bronze insert. These materials were selected for their ability to accommodate misalignment as well as corrosion protection. The bronze inserteliminates steel-to-steel contact, allowing ease of motor disassembly even after years of service. Quill-type inputs have steel-to-steel contact between the motor shaft and the quill-input shaft of the reducer. In corrosive or moist environments, this metal-to-metal contact will undergo fretting corrosion.
VLIII Dry Cavity Output Flange NORD’s VLIII flange option has two main features: a large output bearing span and an oil leakage protectionsystem.
The large bearing span enables the NORD box to handle high, overhung loads. The top bearing is a cylindrical roller bearing and the bottom is a sphericalroller bearing. The spherical roller bearing wasselected due to its high radial load capacities.
NORD’s QUADRILIP™ Seal system prevents oil leaking from the gearbox into the VLIII flange. If in any case oil does leak past the seals, it would flow down to the oil slinger mounted onto the shaft. As the shaftrotates, the oil would sling off into the cavity. A sight glass is provided for dry cavity inspection. The seal at the bottom has a double lip and is grease packed.

LubricationNORD ships all sealed units pre-filled with lubrication. The unit size and mounting position determine fill quantity.In a reducer, the lubricant is extremely important. Besides preventing metal-to-metal contact, a properly selectedlubricant reduces friction and transfers heat through the box and to the case. It is important that proper oils are used in a gear reducer. Properly selected oil will have the required additives to prevent the unwanted formation of foam, oxidation and rust.
NORD’s helical bevel gear boxes are shipped standard with mineral based gear oil. The oil has an equivalentviscosity of ISO VG 220 or AGMA EP5. These oils are designed to operate with an ambient temperature range of 20 to 104 O F (-5 to 40O C). Synthetic oil is also available upon request.

Mounting Position NORD overhead conveyer drives are constructed and assembled for a various mounting orientation “MountingPosition.” The reducer mounting position must be specified at the time of ordering to ensure the properconstruction for the required situation.

Autovent ™ Breather The Autovent operates like a check-valve to allow the reducer to dissipate internal pressure while preventing lubricant contamination during cooling. A spring presses a ball against a machinedorifice until the heating of the oil and air inside the reducer exceeds 2 psi. Between 2 and 5 psi,the spring compresses and the ball is displaced, allowing pressure to escape. The internal pressure drops below 2 psi, the spring elongates and the ball returns to its initial position, sealingthe unit. As the reducer continues to cool, the unit will temporarily develop a slight vacuum.
GearingGear Quality Level: AGMA Class 11-13.
Gear Material: SAE 8620 casehardened steel.
Gear Hardness: Case hardened to 58-62 Rockwell-C.
Gear Finish: All high-speed gears are ground; low-speedgears are finished skived after hardening.
High-speed pinion gears have a 22-degree helix angle.
Pressure angle of the gearing is 20 degrees.

Top Coat Paint Stainless steel paint is the standard topcoat finish. The paint has a low sheen, metallic gray appearance. The stainless steel paint is a single package, water reducible, acrylic emulsion, pigmented with alloy 316 stainlesssteel flake. It is non-flammable, low VOC, and offers high corrosion resistance, long-term durability, and good abrasion resistance.
The stainless steel paint can be used as a metal primer and/or topcoat on properly prepared ferrous andnonferrous steel, galvanized steel, tin, aluminum, concrete and wood. It can also be used as a topcoat over primed steel surfaces and most previously painted surfaces in corrosive atmospheres. It has the ability to adhereto metal surfaces with slight contamination of oils or greases.
