Record

General Maintenance InformationThis Service Guide indicates the schedu ledmaintenance required for your vehicle. Propermaintenance guards against major repair expensesresulting from neglect or inadequate maintenance,and may help increase the value you receivewhen you sell or trade your vehicle.

It is your responsibility to make sure that all of the scheduled maintenance is p erformed and thatthe materials used meet Ford engineeringspecifications. Failure to perform scheduledmaintenance, as specified in the Service Guide,will invalidate warranty coverage on partsaffected by the lack of maintenance. Make surethat receipts for completed maintenance work areretained with the vehicle and confirmation of maintenance w ork is always entered in yourService Guide.

Rear axle lube must be replaced if the axle hasbeen submerged in water. Otherwise, the lubeshould not be checked or changed unless a leak issuspected or repair required.

Severe Duty Schedule

NOTE: Items for Emission Control Service are shownin this type and style.

For items marked with a number in parenthesessuch as (1), see footnote at the end of this section.

NOTE: The Severe Duty Schedule providesmaintenance intervals for replacing yourair cleaner filter if you drive in severedust conditions. However, the conditionsyou drive in may require even morefrequent air cleaner replacementintervals than those shown. Check withyour dealer.

NOTE: Rear axle lubricants must be replacedanytime the axle has been submerged inwater.Non-synthetic rear axle lubricantsshould be replaced every 3,000 miles or3 months, whichever occurs first, duringextended trailer tow operation above 21

degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit)ambient and wide open throttle forextended periods above 45 m.p.h. The3,000 mile lube change interval may bewaived if the axle was filled with75W140 synthetic gear lubricant meetingFord Specification WSL-M2C192-A, partnumber F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent.Add 4 ounces of additive frictionmodifier C8AZ-19B546-A (EST-M2C118-A) o r equivalent for completerefill of traction-lok axles. The axlelubricant should be changed anytime theaxle has been submerged in water.Police and Taxi Vehicles: Rear axle

lubricants must be replaced every100,000 miles. This requirement may bewaived if the axle was filled with Fordapproved 75W-140 synthetic gearlubricant meeting material specificationWSL-M2C192-A, Part Number F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent. Add 4-ounces of additive Friction Modifier C8AZ-19B546-A, Ford specification EST-M2C118-A, o r equivalent for completerefill of Traction-Lok rear axles. The rearaxle lubricant should be changedanytime the axle has been submerged inwater.

Trailer Tow Operation: The rear axlelubricant must be changed every 3,000miles or 3 months, whichever occursfirst, during extended trailer towoperations above 70 degrees Fahrenheitambient or wide open throttle forextended periods above 45 mph. The3,000 mile lube change interval may bewaived if the rear axle was filled withFord approved 75W-140 synthetic gearlubricant meeting material specificationWSL-M2C192-A, part number F1TZ-19580-B or equivalent. Add 4-ounces of additive Friction Modifier, C8AZ-19B546-A, Ford specification EST-M2C118-A, o r equivalent for completerefill of Traction-Lok rear axles, except

Owner MaintenanceChecks

The following lists are vehicle checks andinspections that should be performed by theowner or qualified service technician at thefrequencies indicated to help ensure safe,dependable operation of your vehicle.

Any ad verse conditions should be brought to theattention of your dealer or qualified servicetechnician for service advice as soon as possible.

These Owner Maintenance Checks are generallynot covered by warranties and you may becharged for labor, parts and lubricants used.

40 Ow ner Maintenance Checks

When You Stop for Fuel:

u Check the engine oil level.

u Check coolant level in the coolant recoveryreservoir.

u Check the windshield washer fluid level.

u Look for low or under-inflated tires.

While Operating Your Vehicle:

u Note any changes in the sound of the exhaustor any smell of exhaust fumes in the vehicle.

u Check for vibrations in the steering wheel.Notice any increased steering effort orlooseness in the steering wheel.

u Notice if your vehicle constantly turn s slightlyor pulls to one side of the road.

u When stopping, listen and check for strangesounds, pulling to one side, increased brakepedal travel or hard to push brake pedal.

u If any slipping or changes in the operation of

your transmission occur, check thetransmission fluid level.

u Check automatic transmission P (Park)function.

u Check parking brake.

u Check for fluid leaks under your vehicle

(water dripping from the air conditioningsystem after use is normal).

u Check warning lights and gauges.

At least monthly:

u Check the tire pressure check tires whencold, not after a long drive.

u Check coolant level in the coolant recoveryreservoir.

u Check the operation of all exterior lamps,including the brakelamps, turn signals andhazard warning flashers.

At least twice a year:(i.e., every Spring and Fall)

u Check rad iator, heater and air-cond itioninghoses for leaks or damage.

u Check the power steering fluid level.

u Check windshield washer spray and wiperoperation. Clean wiper blades with clean clothdampened with washer fluid.

u Check for w orn tires and loose w heel lug nuts.

u Check mu ffler, exhaust pipes, shields andclamps.

u Check headlamp alignment.

u Check the lap-shoulder belts for wear andfunction.

u Check air pressure in spare tire.

u Lubricate all hinges, checks, latches and all

outside key locks.


At least once a year:

u Lubricate door rubber weatherstrips.

u Clean the body w ater drain holes.

u Check the air conditioning system before thewarm weather season.

u Check the brake fluid level.

u Clean the battery connections.

u Lubricate the transmission controls andlinkage.

u Check manual transmission fluid.

If any of these conditions are noted, bring them to

the attention of your dealer or qualified servicetechnician as soon as possible.
