THE H ISTORY

William Murray 1st Earl of Mansfield bought Caen Wood as his seat in 1755. He was a renowned barrister, politician and judge who held the posts of Attorney General and Chief Justice. In the 18th century the Mansfield estate which ran between Highgate and Hampstead was regarded as ‘rural’ and was described at the time as ‘it’s extensive grounds contribute in no small degree to enrich the neighbouring scenery’.The original house was surrounded by three woods Bishop’s Wood, Mutton Wood and Wild Wood, Lord Mansfield left the woods as ‘wild copse’ as cover for his game. Between 1764 -1779 Kenwood House was remodelled extensively by Robert Adam, the Mansfield family remained in residence there until 1922.

Gosling Ltd is a luxury bespoke furniture design company whose vision is to combine classical inspiration and exquisite British craftsmanship with ergonomic perfection. Golsing’s world renowned furniture designs and interiors draw inspiration from classical architecture and styles. Every piece of furniture is made to the most exacting standards using the finest materials and traditional cabinet making techniques. Each element of the interior design is addressed with the same care and attention to detail.

Using the oval Art Deco style staircase as the main focus, Gosling has created a central area accentuated by the marble inlaid floor. These work to the exact dimensions as the Gosling bespoke black lacquer table above as well as the oval staircase as it ascends the house. The cascading hanging light installation is by Sharon Marsden who is world renowned for creating bespoke chandeliers. The three doorway openings have been mirrored to create a further sense of space, with the addition of a pair of Art Deco console tables placed either side of the main double doors.

This dramatic room has been designed using the Art Deco style to its full potential. The presence of detailed Eglomise panels, inspired by the French designer, Armand Albert Rateau have been used to create extraordinary depth of mirror surfaces which bounce candle light as well as the light sculpture around the room at night to create a wonderful place to dine. A bespoke dining table and sideboard have been created specifically for the room with elegant light fittings using bronze and crystal.

This impressive space has been created using the strength and styling ideas of the SS Normandie, an ocean going liner from the 1940’s. The stunning design of the dining room on the Normandie is reflected in the gilded coffered ceiling and the white, gold and black marble floor surrounding the swimming pool. The rug designs from the 1940’s have been replicated into tiles that form the design and colour of the swimming pool. The lighting has been dramatically created with bespoke 3 metre tall lamps in between the windows and mirror panels.
