2. Background
Man on a Mission (MOAM), is a non-profit organization (134-848-NPO) which was
formally established in March 2014 on the premise of addressing the ills of our society
through transformation of men. It is based on a biblical scripture in Genesis 3v9
“…Then the Lord called to the man, where are you?” Men have shifted from their
position. We believe that the rise and fall of any community or nation lies with men
and things can only improve once men take their position, shun the wrong and do
the right. Men have been endowed with special responsibility to be Protectors,
Providers and Loving Leaders for their families and communities but the opposite is
taking place. Issues of absent fathers, abuse against women and children, HIV/AIDS,
high crime and violence rates, drugs and alcohol abuse and high divorce rates are
what informed the establishment of this organization.
As men we are taking a stand to say there are good men out there, who want to
see a positive change in our society. It’s time for men of integrity to take their
position and be relevant in the society. This organization is open to all men from all
walks of life, who want to make a positive difference in our nation and be the
change they want to see. It is said that “All that is needed for evil to advance is for
good people to do nothing”

5. Pillars and Activities of Man on a Mission
MOAM operates on three pillars namely; Manhood, Spouse-hood and Fatherhood as
explained below:
Manhood
This pillar is about building
men of integrity who play a
positive role in their families
and society. Men who
know who they are and
have self-respect and
respect for others. Men who
don’t abuse women or
children or commit crime to
any member of society.
Responsible men who play
a positive role in society.
To address this pillar the following activities are done:
Visit schools and talk to young man on character
building and avoiding risky behaviour such as
smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, unprotected sex,
violence, etc.
Provide pre and post circumcision/initiation
counselling and mentorship on manhood
Engage with men in the communities by providing
ongoing education on life issues, mentorship and
support
Educate young men on how to treat women in or out
of marriage
Host men’s seminars to address men’s issues and
encourage positive behaviour
Spouse-hood
Addresses men in marriage,
to be husbands that treat
their wives with utmost love
and respect. Husbands who
are not abusive but
protective to their wives.
We do the following activities to address this pillar:
Host marriage seminars to educate and mentor
couples on how to live in marriage
Provide marriage counselling including pre-marriage
counselling
Host bi-monthly ongoing couples gatherings to equip
couples on marriage
Host parenting sessions and mentorship to strengthen
families
Fatherhood
This is the core of the three
pillars because most of the
problems we see in men
can be traced back to the
issue of absent fathers.
Most african men grew up
without a positive male role
model and this affects their
identity on manhood, which
subsequently negatively
affects their role as
husbands and fathers and
society members in general.
With this pillar we seek to
break the cycle of absent
fathers as we mentor men
on how to be loving fathers
who are fully involved in the
lives of their children
To address this pillar we do the following activities:
We educate young men on the importance of
having children in marriage, and encourage those
who already have children to be fully involved in the
lives of their children
We support single moms who are raising boys alone
by providing one on one mentorship and guidance
to the boys
We facilitate reconciliation and reconnecting of
fathers to their children, to encourage them to be
involved in their children’s lives
We provide group mentorship sessions for young men
and deal with issues of identity and their life purpose
We run a children’s church in Duncan Village every
Sunday morning where kids are taught the word of
God and given a cooked meal
We take kids from disadvantaged homes and
orphanages for outings to the zoo, to give them the
experience of going out with fathers.
We encourage the adopt a child campaign where
men are encouraged not only to father their own
biological children but others who don’t have fathers.

7. MOAM Activities for 2016
Activities How beneficiaries benefitted
Visited 5 High Schools and 3 Primary Schools
to conduct dialogue sessions with boys from
grade 6&7 (Primary) and grades 8-12 in High
Schools. Each school was visited at least
twice and others more, in the period
between February and August. The purpose
of these sessions is to educate young
people, especially boys, on issues of life,
raise awareness of risky behaviours and how
these can negatively affect their future.
The learners were equipped on social skills;
they enjoyed the sessions as they could freely
interact with the MOAM mentors and ask
questions. They expressed that they would
now make wiser choices in life because of
these sessions. The teachers were also very
appreciative of these sessions as it
contributed to the work they do of impacting
the lives of young people.
Organised Street Soccer games for young
boys between 9 – 15 years as part of our
mentoring strategies to engage them to
encourage good behaviour
Boys from different areas of Duncan Village
Squatter Camps enjoyed the session of
playing soccer, interacting with each other
and learning good behaviour
Visited 2 Orphanage Homes to encourage
boys living there on issues of identity and
self-worth, encourage them on life issues
Many of the boys grew up with absent fathers
as a result they have anger and identity
issues, they were helped on how to deal with
their emotions and focus on their life
Hosted 2 Men’s Breakfast sessions (May &
September) to equip men on issues of
manhood, fatherhood and spouse hood. A
total of about 500 men from all over East
London and Port Elizabeth attended.
This is a platform for men to discuss their
issues, share their frustrations, learn from each
other and support each other. They enjoyed
these sessions as they were able to speak
freely without fear of being judged.
Hosted a WHY (Women Have Yearned) for
answers Conference. Where a panel of
speakers addressed issues of living life as a
single person married or divorced. This was a
follow up of last year’s WHY Con which was
also a huge success and targeted women.
The target group for the conference was
both women and men to be equipped with
the issues of life and relationships. There was a
time for questions and answers to allow
attendees to interact with the speakers.
Organised and led a Provincial Men’s
March against Women and Child Abuse in
November 2016. During this march men
were also removing illegal abortion stickers
that are making our city dirty.
Men took a stand to say NO to women &
child abuse and crime. About 200 men from
different organizations and churches joined
the march in Oxford Street. A memorandum
was handed over to the Mayor at City Hall
Hosted a Christmas Party for underprivileged
children in Duncan Village in December
2016. Also handed out gifts and party packs
Children enjoyed this party and were
delighted to receive the gifts.
Served in the LOGOS Christian Ship as
Ambassadors in May, joining many others
from different countries.
People who attended the ship enjoyed the
different activities provided such as learning
about the ship and other countries

Additionally to the above Man on a Mission hold ongoing one on one
mentorship sessions with men, young and old, single and married; to help
them deal with issues they are struggling with.
MOAM took young men from Duncan Village to the Karoo Mighty Men
Conference. Most of these guys are ex-convicts and drug dealers, one of
them still serving a sentence on parole. We have programs to mentor these
men and we have seen their lives being transformed.
We saw that it would benefit them to visit the Karoo Mighty Men Conference
to interact with other men and strengthen their faith in God.
Radio talks and interview sessions were held throughout the year with various
Radio Stations such as Umhlobo Wenene FM, Link FM, TRU FM, Izwi Lethemba,
with focus on addressing men’s issues. Following these numerous phone calls
were received from throughout the Eastern Cape and other provinces such
as Northern Cape, Western Cape, North West and Gauteng. Men needed
consultation and advice on issues affecting them and their families. They
were also expressing a need for MOAM to be established in those areas.
8. Successes of Man on a Mission

(2016) for the work that we do in society

marketing was sponsored by Buffalo City Metro

have been transformed. One of the men was a drug dealer and gang leader
and is now a changed man who is employed through MOAM contacts and is
starting a family. He is now active in educating his community on dangers of
Drugs and Crime
Established a children’s church in Duncan Village Squatter camp where
