    April 2013 – July 2014

  • Storm Drain Cover Design Contest

City of San Marcos and Texas State University - San Marcos, Texas

The objectives of this contest were:

    • Develop and adopt a new storm drain cover design to raise public awareness about

    storm water pollution prevention.

    • Involve the public in the design process, thereby using the contest itself as a public education/involvement tool.

    • Combine the contest for the City of San Marcos residents and Texas State University students, faculty and staff.

Two winners were chosen. Andrea Weissenbuehler submitted the winning center design and Mabel

Lopez submitted the winning rim design. Both pieces of art were combined for the final design.

These winners were formally recognized by City Council along with the age category winners in a

Proclamation to Art and the Environment presentation. The winning design was adopted by the City

of San Marcos on January 21, 2014 and by Texas State University on February 3, 2014, becoming the

standard to be used on all new storm drain manhole covers throughout the city, on both capital

improvement projects and public improvements constructed as part of private developments.

WHAT are we looking for? A design for a manhole cover. The design should be unique for San Marcos that shows how protecting our local waters begins at the storm drain. It must be original art placed in a six to eight inch circle. The winning design will be cast in iron on the manhole cover, so the design should be limited to black and white.

WHO can submit? The contest is open to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in San Marcos including Texas State students. Entry forms are available at www.sanmarcostx.gov/contest

HOW do I submit? Please either mail, e-mail or hand deliver all designs by Novem-ber 1, 2013 to:

HOW will the winning design be chosen? A panel of judges will select the top four winning designs based on the relevance to the intended water quality message and overall appearance. Winners will be selected from the following age groups: 10 and under, 11-13, 14-18, over 18. Winners from each age group will receive $50 and the grand prize winner will receive an additional $50 and their artwork will be displayed on all new City storm water manhole covers. All entries will be displayed on the Uni-versity and City websites and at the San Marcos Activity Center.

    Protect our river with ART

    It is a common misconception

that storm drains flow to a wastewater treatment plant like

    the sanitary sewer system

    (toilets, sinks, etc.). However

they flow directly or indirectly to

    area streams, rivers, and lakes.

    The winning design will help

    raise awareness about the con-

nection between what goes into a

storm drain and the quality of our

    river.

Using art to bring attention to

these issues allows for an oppor-

tunity for us to experience art in

    our everyday lives.

    WHY ADD ART TO
