Upcoming Celebrations

Bhoomi Pooja SamarohaWith God’s grace, we have acquired the land for our new temple. Please join us to celebrate our first major milestone, the Bhoomi Pooja Samaroha, on June 23rd. The festivities begin at 8:30 AM; please see the Bhoomi Pooja Program for more details.

The purpose of Bhoomi Pooja Samaroha is the veneration and sanctification of the land (Earth / Bhoomi). Earth is one of the five elements, and also the center of all elements. Earth holds the Water to flow, provides combustion for the Fire, objects for the Air to blow, and base for a person to look at the Sky (Space). Bhoomi Pooja is performed to prepare

the land for groundbreaking ceremony and start construction of a new temple in future.

Once the land becomes sanctified, it generates harmonious energies and enables people and communities to come together for achieving a common goal of “Sahanavavatu Sahanau Bhunaktu…”

Several poojas will be performed to complete this ceremony. This is a rare opportunity in a lifetime to observe our ancient Vedic rituals and experience the most exhilarating moments of the Hindu Dharma. Please join us and be a part of this historic moment.

Bhoomi Pooja ProgramPlace: New Hindu Temple Site Address: 7200 S. Potomac St, Centennial, CO

8:30 A.M. to 12 P.M.

Ganesh Pooja This pooja is performed to invoke Lord Ganesha for the removal of obstacles and begin the new endeavor.

Sarvatobhadra-Mandal Pooja Sarvatobhadra Mandal is made of grains and is placed along with the offerings for Gods. On this Mandal, Gods - Lokpaalaas, Dikpaalaas, Yoginis, and other related deities are invited and offered pooja to bless the hosts and attendees. The Mandal is significant in bringing physical, mental and spiritual harmony.

Navagrah Pooja Nine Planets are worshipped on the Mandal (made of grains) for the removal of sinful karmas of past and present lives and bestow the blissful life onwards.

Kalash Pooja On a drawing of eight-pattle lotus flower, a Kalash (water pot) is placed with the chanting of Vedic hymns. Water is the essence of life on earth. Thus by worshipping it, we harmonize with all living beings.

Punyah Vachan On the same Kalash, we invite all the Rishis, Sages, Nature Gods like Seasons, Rivers, and other harmonious elements. Specific Vedic mantras are used in invocation of blessings for health, wealth, progeny, happiness and peace.

Homa (Havan) Usually, after every pooja, if Muhurta and situation permit, a Homa is performed to please the invited Gods. Fire is the holiest form of all mediums to make offerings to Gods. One of the segments of the Homa is called “The Sarvaprayashehitla Homa”, which means to compensate and forgive for any mistakes we may have committed in fixing the muhurta and following the proper procedure in doing the pooja. After the completion of all poojas, the Water from the Kalash, and from the Prokshanipatra of the Homa is sprinkled on hosts, attendees and the land in the form of blessings from all Gods.

12 P.M. to 12:30 P.M. • Blessing of the Stone Plaque by Acharya Ji • Speech and Presentation by the President, Dr.

Mahesh Jha and others.

Update on New Temple Project Since you received the Fall 2006 issue of Mandir Vani, significant progress has been made on the New Temple project. Those of you who have given your email address to us, we have been sending updates almost on a monthly basis. However, for about half of the families on our regular mailing list, we do not have the email address, so here is a brief update on this major undertaking.

Purchase of Land We have purchased a 4.25 acre lot at 7200 South Potomac Street in Centennial, Colorado. The deal was closed on January 30, 2007. Thanks to the widespread community support and to the families from all regions who contributed generously – from a few dollars to 50,000 that made it possible to pay $500,000 in cash. We will be celebrating this accomplishment at the Bhoomi Poojaa Samaroha on Saturday, June 23, 2007 morning and every one is welcome.

Requirements Document and Conceptual Design The New Temple Design Committee worked hard for several months to develop a conceptual design of the facilities that will meet the community needs for now and future, without the need of an expansion for at least ten years. It took considerable efforts to reach a consensus on selection of deities and their placement. Based on request from many community members and their pledge of support, we have also included a separate but attached temple for Sai Baba. The conceptual design is presented in the attached drawing. We welcome your comments and suggestions. A commercial artist is working on a 3-dimensional color sketch that will be presented during Bhoomi Poojaa Samaroha. We plan to use this design to solicit bids from Architects and Engineering Companies (from America and India) to perform the detailed architectural and engineering design to make the facilities aesthetic, functional and compliant with the codes (City of Centennial, Arapahoe County). We have considered and included Vastu principles in locating the various areas and sizing the two buildings and two main temples and the Architect we select will further

incorporate the Vastu concepts as much as practical in modern times in a cold climate.

Business Plan We are currently working on the Business Plan and will be presenting the draft to the community during Bhoomi Poojaa Samaroha on June 23, 2007. It is realized that with two priests and much larger temple, the current approach of focusing on religious services only cannot support the operation and upkeep of the facilities. Our plan is to continue to provide these and other basic spiritual, educational and cultural programs at low or no cost to encourage greater participation of the community. In addition, we plan to offer other services and programs at fair, but below market cost, to generate income for the operation and upkeep of the facilities as well as construction of additional facilities. These offerings will include a flower and gift shop, a commercial kitchen and banquet hall to cater to groups of 50 to 500 people (no alcohol or meat), and a theater style auditorium for 325 people to experience and enjoy discourses by saints and scholars, cultural performances by local artists (organized by regional associations), concerts and shows by famous artists from India and USA, and screening of classic Hindi and regional language movies. Again, we seek your comments.

Project Plan As things stand currently, we hope to get the detailed design and permitting done by spring 2008 and hold the groundbreaking ceremony in summer 2008. Assuming timely availability of funds, the construction can be completed by Fall of 2009. As for the budget, the size of facilities has increased significantly to meet the needs discussed above as well as Sai Baba temple. It is our preliminary estimate that the design and permitting may cost $300,000 and construction of buildings with total floor area of about 20,000 sq ft may cost $2 million. Then there will be installation of deities, furnishings and landscaping. So the total project budget is estimated at $3 million or little more.

Fund Raising While some money has come from the sale of land (third lot at the current location) and some

Page 4: Mandir Vani

Volume 11, No. 1 Mandir Vani Page 4 Summer 2007

will come from the sale of the current building, after we move, most of the funding has to come from the community. Based on experience of other temples, and our own experience, the funds will come from a small number of large donors as well as a large number of small donors. We plan to recognize the large donors in many ways including naming some of the buildings and facilities after them. We are pursuing several fund raising approaches in parallel. The Landmark List campaign was very successful. Over 150 families contributed over $450,000 that was used for the land purchase. Their names will be laser etched on a graphite slab as a historical marker to be installed on the site. Our next immediate goal is to raise at least $300,000 by summer end to fund the detailed design and obtain permit by spring of 2008. Please use the Fund contribution slip to make your pledge/contribution. If preferred, you can indicate total planned contribution on the Pledge Form and pay it over three years. You can make contributions in your name, in some one else’s name, or choose to remain anonymous. To further facilitate the contributions, we have set up accounts and services to accept stock donations and donations on Master card and Visa. Please also remember that if you work for an employer that matches contributions to charitable organizations, approach them.

Community Participation and Non-financial Support Many community members, who are not trustees, have been helping us in various ways. Most notable among them is Mrs. Shashi Kumar who has been keeping track of New Temple Fund. We need additional help, particularly in the areas of accounting (Quick Books data entry, auditing), communications (expanding the address directory and email list, Mandir Vani, Web Site) and fundraising (approaching your friends and community). As we start the detailed design process, we invite architects and engineers (soil, surveying, structural, mechanical, electrical, lighting etc) to join the project as advisors and/or project engineers. Please remember that as a community project, and it often takes more time to make a decision. However, the reward of your

voluntary service to your community in terms of personal satisfaction, pride and recognition will last a lifetime. Please contact Bipin Agarwal: (303) 883-6198, Mahesh Jha: (303) 526-0260, Satish V (Sam) Kumar: (720) 973-4635, Narender Kumar: (303) 797-8029, or Reva Nayar: (303) 303-690-4347 for further details on any item discussed above or others related to the project.

Shri Sai Baba Temple Proposed The Sai Baba Temple between the main temple and cultural center buildings has been proposed and approved by the board. Further details will be available in future.

Temple Schedule Mon –Fri: 10 A.M. – 2 P.M. Sat and Sun: 9 A.M. – 9 P.M. All the major Hindu festivals are celebrated in the temple on actual day. In addition, Poornima and Sankat Har Chaturthi (fourth day after the full moon) poojas are performed every month. Please contact Acharya Ji or Pundit Ji for more information.

Kudos Last April, just after the Rama Navami celebration, Sai Group of Denver, coordinated by Mrs. Gangadharan, helped in painting the temple. The project was half-done and hanging for a while; a bunch of dedicated folks got together and finished it like a breeze. Thank you.

Board Briefings… The Board of Trustees is responsible for overall management of the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center of the Rockies (HTCC). It sets policies and guidelines. The day-to-day operations are managed by the Officers and Committees. The names and phone numbers of the current Officers and Trustees are given below. If you have any suggestions about the operations of the current temple, plans for the new temple, or you would like to volunteer your services, please feel free to contact them. We thank Mr. Pushpa Khatri and Mrs. Madhur Mahajan who retired from the Board at the end of 2006. We are also glad to report that Mrs. Mahajan, who retired from the Board after many years of service, will continue to edit Mandir Vani and help with the communications. We also welcome Mr. Paresh Patel, Dr. Vasant Pawar, and Dr. Prabhakara Rao as new Trustees. They would be helping with greater involvement of Gujarati, Marathi and Kannada communities in the current temple operations and in the New Temple project. Recently, the Board approved a policy to standardize the minimum amount of suggested donations and methods of payment for the Poojaas and Sanskaaras performed in accordance with the request of Yajmans either at the Temple or off site, by priest – Acharya K.C. Upadhyay Ji or Pandit Raghavendra Ji. The full information is presented in this issue of Mandir Vani. Please keep it for your reference.

At the request of certain community members, the Board formed a Task Force to evaluate the constitution of HTCC and recommend the desirable changes. After deliberating the Task Force recommendations, the Board decided that an Advisory Council will be formed with community leaders who have contributed $25,000 or more towards the New Temple Fund. The Board also decided that there is no reason to change the current policy of election of Trustees and an open congregation membership (any one whose name is on the temple mailing list) will continue with no set fee or donation requirement. Welcome the New Priest Please welcome the new priest, Pundit Raghavendra Iyyer. Pundit Ji was born and raised in an orthodox Brahmin family near the holy city of Thirumala, Andhra Pradesh.
