Ten Years, Ten Promises…
As Young People we have been promised that ten things will happen within the next ten years. These are:
• New and improved places for Young People
• Expansion of YOF/YCF
• Councils to concentrate on Young Peoples views
• Create opportunities for us to develop skills
• To target disadvantaged Young People
Children & Young People’s Department
• Celebrate Young People becoming adults• Providing activities in an accessible manner for
those who need it most• Giving disadvantaged Young People a chance to
mix with others away from home• Accessible information to all Young People,
letting them know what is on offer• Provide activities which are affordable, easy to get
to and safe for Young People
Children & Young People’s Department
Aiming High• Positives:
– Guaranteed extension of YOF/YCF until 2011– Greater active participation from Young People– Working alongside elected members in local
councils– Young People make decisions for 25% of youth
activities and facilities by 2018– Involving Young People to give them a greater
sense of pride in their local community
Children & Young People’s Department
Aiming High• Challenges:
– Token involvement of Young People
– Broadening involvement of Young People
– Young People need to be able to see changes happening
– Emphasising the involvement of Young People
– Cultural change needs to happen to take our views and decisions seriously and with respect
– What will be the role of schools?
– Consideration of language used with Young People (e.g. Volunteering)
Children & Young People’s Department
To Summarise…• Here are our thoughts as Young People for your
discussions…– How do you ensure Young People’s decisions are respected
and taken seriously?– How do you get representation from all groups of young
people, focusing on disadvantaged, vulnerable and harder to reach groups?
– How are you going to guarantee adequate resources to support young people?
– How will you encourage inter-generational working in communities?
– How will you market volunteering to all Young People?
