MANCHESTER COLLEGE Education Department LESSON PLAN by: Daidra Jagger Lesson: Global Grapefruit Length: 15-20 minutes Age or Grade Intended: 3 rd Grade Academic Standards: 3.3.2 Identify the continents and oceans, the equator, Northern and Southern hemispheres, Eastern and Western hemispheres. Performance Objective(s): Given a class discussion on the seven continents, the students will be able to label all of them on the World Map worksheet with 100% accuracy. Given a class discussion on hemispheres, the students will be able to identify them with 100% accuracy on the World Map worksheet. Given a class discussion on oceans, the students will be able to locate all four100% of the time on the World Map worksheet. Advanced Preparation by Teacher: Find a map of the world make copies of the world map worksheet find a permanent marker and two grapefruits/oranges have crayons and markers laid out Procedure: Introduction/Motivation: Start class by asking the students “What do you know about the places on this map?” (Gardner’s Visual/Spatial, Bloom’s Knowledge) Write all the responses on the chalkboard. Once everyone is finished explain to the students that the world is broken up into major physical divisions: continents, oceans, and hemispheres. Step-by-Step Plan: 1. Explain that a Continent- is one of the seven main land areas on Earth, Ask for a student to point to one of the continents. 2. Also explain that an Ocean- is a large body of salt water and that there are four oceans, Ask for another student to point to one of the four oceans. 3. Point to the name of a continent or ocean on the chalkboard and have the students read it aloud with you. (Gardner’s Visual/Spatial, Interpersonal) 4. Now point to that continent or ocean (on the map) and have the class repeat the name again.

LESSON PLAN by: Daidra Jagger

Lesson: Global Grapefruit Length: 15-20 minutes Age or Grade Intended: 3rd Grade Academic Standards: 3.3.2 Identify the continents and oceans, the equator, Northern and Southern hemispheres, Eastern and Western hemispheres. Performance Objective(s): ♥ Given a class discussion on the seven continents, the students will be able to label all of them on the World Map worksheet with 100% accuracy. ♥ Given a class discussion on hemispheres, the students will be able to identify them with 100% accuracy on the World Map worksheet. ♥ Given a class discussion on oceans, the students will be able to locate all four100% of the time on the World Map worksheet. Advanced Preparation by Teacher:

• Find a map of the world • make copies of the world map worksheet • find a permanent marker and two grapefruits/oranges • have crayons and markers laid out

Procedure:

Introduction/Motivation: Start class by asking the students “What do you know about the places on this map?” (Gardner’s Visual/Spatial, Bloom’s Knowledge) Write all the responses on the chalkboard.

5. Repeat this process with all continents and oceans. 6. Explain to the students that sometimes the world is referred to in terms of hemispheres, or halves of the globe. 7. On the map, show students where the northern and southern hemispheres are divided at the equator, and where the western and eastern hemispheres are divided at the prime meridian and the international dateline. Set the two grapefruits/oranges and the permanent marker on a desk in the front of the class. 8. Ask a volunteer to draw a line on one grapefruit/orange to mark off the northern and southern hemispheres. Explain to the students that this is called the equator. 9. Ask another volunteer to draw a line on the other grapefruit/orange to mark off the eastern and western hemispheres. (Gardner’s Bodily/Kinesthetic) 10. Take turns raising the fruit and pointing to one hemisphere. Have the students call out the name of the hemisphere as you point to it. (Gardner’s Linguistic) 11. Now tell students that they are going to label and color their own maps of the world. Instruct the student to label the continents and oceans in the boxes provided and to color each continent a different color.

Closure: When you see that everyone is finished have the put everything, but their papers away. Now go over the following review questions:

1. Where is Africa? Have a student show you where Africa is located. 2. Which continent is this (point to a continent on the student’s maps)? 3. Where is the Indiana Ocean? 4. Which hemisphere is the Northern Hemisphere?

All of the above questions are from Bloom’s Knowledge Assessment: After the lesson the students will get a worksheet of the World Map. On this worksheet the students will be labeling the continents, oceans, equator, and prime meridian. This worksheet will be worth ten points. For the students that don’t reach the goal stated in the objective I will continue to work on it during free time. We will continue to go over the continents, oceans, equator and prime meridian. The following week they will be tested with the same World Map print out. Adaptations/Enrichment: One adaptation I have to make during this lesson is to make sure I speak slowly and clearly because I have a student who has a cochlear implant. For the gifted and talented students I will ask them what they would like to do on top of labeling the map. This could mean that they could look up information on a continent they are interested in or could pick a continent and label states within that continent. Self-Reflection: Refer to the back of assignment break down sheet.
