Teens know they don’t know everything.
They want to skill up.
They see the job as the way to skill up and get insider insight.
I wanted to to set goals for
myself. I wanted to see
myself in their shoes.Money was the main reason I went to get the job, but it also gave me a purpose to feel like I was doing something in life and not just stagnant.
I started because I wanted to
become more independent
financially and socially, and
they hired at 15. But I really
was interested in working in
the food industry. My coworkers and managers were standoffish and distant. I probably won’t go back. But I still
feel good about the experience because it taught me how to work in the clinical setting at a hospital.

Skilled coworkers and team culture are compounding investments.
I had a great experience
because of my coworkers.
It felt like I had a second
family. My experience made me feel like a professional, because my coworkers helped me get up to speed fast and taught me how to interact with customers.I didn’t really face discipline.
Instead, when I messed up my
coworkers would assure me it
was going to be okay and took
steps as a team to help me fix
the mistake and continue to
get better. All of my coworkers stepped in to train me. They were extremely helpful and super knowledgeable about the inner workings of the job.

Teens’ first managers are teaching them the “real world” doesn’t respect or appreciate them.
Seeing the way that people around
me struggled for a job, which could
let them go at any moment, made
me realize the real world doesn’t
really care about you because
everyone is replaceableEveryone was not treated the same. Because I was one of the youngest that worked there, I was treated worse than my older coworkers. When I messed up I was corrected,
scolded, yelled at, and written up.You have to take care of yourself
first because a lot of employers
won’t really care about you
because you are expendable. I
learned that from the way my
manager treated me when I made
a mistake and by talking to my
coworkers who told me stories of
people being fired in the past.
Before I quit, one of my managers was straight-up picking on me. They’d patronize me and everything I did. I tried to tell myself I could overcome it, but eventually I cracked. It was a reality check about the real world.
