Understanding South-East Asian particularities
• Various compliance standards apply with different
grid-connection requirements
• Grid stability is under pressure due to high growth
in demand
• Remote location
• Tropical weather conditions
• Different stages of the learning curve
Schneider Electric 6 - Division - Name – Date
CAPEX / OPEX
Mitigation
• Thorough technical due diligence including LCOE
calculation of various solutions
• Cheap is not always beautiful as lower CAPEX may result
in lower RoI
• Long-term commitment made by bankable companies
Risk
• Right design based on
LCOE vs $/W
• Underestimation of the
OPEX costs
Schneider Electric 8 - Division - Name – Date
Grid integration
Mitigation
• Flexible design (not just enough)
• Plant SCADA able to integrate new
features and be connected to DMS
Risk
• Evolution of requirements
over the years
o Reactive power
o Remote control
o Production forecast
o Frequency support

Would you like this plane to have this cockpit?
Grid operators are like international airport
traffic controllers having to manage many
type of planes. They require a minimum of
instruments, data and performance to
allow the plane to land on international
airports. And these requirements may
change overtime.

Plant performance and availability
Mitigation
• Selection of modules and critical equipment
(quality, proven technology…)
• Selection of bankable suppliers
• Long term service contracts with
performance commitment (bonus/malus)
Risk
• Ageing of modules and equipment
• Bankruptcy or default of critical suppliers
• Lack of optimization during operation
Schneider Electric 12 - Division - Name – Date
Indoor vs outdoor
Good weather for outdoor maintenance activity?
• Corrective maintenance can happen any time.
• Intervention in inverters may require several hours of with
the open enclosures.
• Better climatic and environment control with indoor solutions
• High ambient temperatures require proper ventilation inside
inverters buildings

Conclusion
• Challenge design, look at various solutions, ask technical due diligence to go into more
details on the selected solution and bankability of the suppliers.
• Keep in mind that a solar plant is at the end a power plant and considered as such by
grid operators.
• Be ready to make some additional investment to ensure long term operations and to
adapt to new requirements
• Select the solution appropriate to your project (copy/paste does not always work)
• Look for reliable and bankable suppliers as 20 years is a very long period of time
And if you do all the above things right, you will probably enjoy a
better return on investment than expected …
