MANAGEMENT
AS A
PROFESSION
CAN A DOCTOR START A PRACTICE WITHOUT HAVING A MBBS DEGREE OR BE A LAWER WITHOUT A LLB DEGREE ?
WHY?
CAN YOU BECOME A MANAGE WITOUT A MANAGEMENT DEGREE?
DO YOU THINK THAT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO DO A MANAGER’S JOB ARE MBAS’?
WHY?
DOES THIS MEAN THAT TO DO A PERTICULAR SPECIALISED JOB YOU NEED A DEGREE QUALIFICATION IN THAT FIELD?
WHICH ECONOMIC ACTIVITY HAS THIS FEATURE?
IT IS PROFESSION.
SO IT MEANS THAT MANAGEMENT MAY OR MAY NOT BE A PROFESSION
FEATURES OFA PROFESSION
• Well defined body of knowledge
• Restricted entry
• Providing service by charging a fee
• Representative of a professional
association
• Code of conduct
Every profession has a well defined body
of knowledge.
In management there is a well defined
body of knowledge. Various principles &
theories exist and there are a large
number of books on management.
SPECIALISED BODY OF KNOWLEDGE:
RESTRICTED ENTRY / FORMAL METHODS OF TRAINING
Entry in every profession is allowed after passing the
professional examination of that profession.
In management there are a many institutions which
offer managerial courses and give degree. Managerial
knowledge is imparted formally. In management it is
not necessary to have a managerial degree.
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION
All professionals are associated to
some professional organization that
register /give license or permission to
practice .
In management there are associations
but they do not have legal backing.
Managers are not legally bound to get
themselves registered.
ETHICAL CODE OF CONDUCT
The working of all professionals is regulated by the
professional associations. These associations set the code of
conduct to be followed by all professionals of that field.
In management there are associations since it is not
compulsory for managers to register themselves so the code
of conduct is not strictly followed by manager.
CONCLUSION
From the above discussion it is clear
that management does not have all the
features of a profession but we hope that it
may soon be regarded as a fully developed
profession.
Now lets check… what we learned??? (Answer the following questions)
• Qs. True / False
• Management has ethical code of conduct.
• Management has restricted entry.
• Qs. "Management is regarded as a fully developed
profession". Do you agree? Give reasons.
