Management of Temporary Works
Managing Temporary Works to BS 5975:2008 is a key and part of all construction projects, the success of effectively managing temporary works lies with having well informed construction teams in place to be able to identify when temporary works Engineered solutions are needed and what level design checks are required.
Recognising this fact, Shaw Group UK EHS and Engineering departments visited each site to deliver Temporary Works awareness training, the following slides show an abridged version of the training delivered.
Shaw Group UK Limited
• BS5975: 2008 “Code of Practice for temporary works procedures and the permissible stress design of falsework”
• Defined as, “those parts of the works that allow or enable construction of, protect, support or provide access to the permanent works and which might or might not remain in place at the completion of the works”
• Our main focus will be on temporary steelwork, but it covers other items; Scaffold for example.
• “Temporary steelwork put in place to support the permanent works during the build or assembly phase; to remain in place until such time as the permanent works can safely support itself”

CB&I Shaw UK regard BS5975 compliance as ‘best practice
• Temporary works will be formally controlled using the specified guidelines, even on projects where our Client may not insist on it!
• Temporary Works procedures will generally require:- ! Appointment of a Temporary Works Coordinator ! Preparation of an adequate Design Brief document* ! Completion of a Temporary Works Register ! Production of Temporary Works Design drawings* ! Independent checking of design (Signed) ! Issue of a formal Design Report (Signed)*
*Document package to be formally submitted to Client for approval

The Design Brief will give due consideration to the following:-
! The overall scheme detailing what needs to be achieved ! Layout of steelwork and proposed configuration ! Details of the materials to be used ! Requirements for wind loading considerations ! Consideration of risks ! Programme requirements for each stage of the process ! The timing for removal of the Temporary Works and the
ability of the permanent works to be self supporting ! Surface coating requirements for the steelwork
• Using freely available surplus “packing steel” is acceptable, but only if we know exactly what grade it is and that exact grade is used in the design calculations

Lifting Brackets
! All must be correctly designed and detailed with supporting calculations ! Must be load tested prior to use ~ SWL kg to be lifted + 25% ! Materials used shall be traceable back to test certs ! A ‘Technical File’ shall be produced (Original held at Derby & a Copy held at Site for inspection if
requested) ! All lifting attachments MUST be ‘CE’ Marked and have an identification plate attached
