Issue 1 5 February 2016
Dear Parents/Carers
A warm welcome to the 2016 school year at Malvern Springs Primary School, and a special welcome to families new to the school. The year started smoothly with children being well prepared for learning, and seeming happy. Thank you to all parents for making sure your children had everything they needed for school. We have started the school year with about 750 students – Anne Hamersley PS has taken some of the enrolment pressure off Malvern Springs, so our numbers have stabilized this year.
School Council We are calling for two new parent representatives for the School Council, the group which helps set directions for the school. You will find a nomination form below if you are interested in being a parent representative. The closing date for nominations is 22 March 2016. The commitment is one or two meetings each term, usually held early in the evening, and the term is for three years. The School Council does not do any fundraising. An area the School Council will be making decisions about is how we market our school, so we are forming a Marketing Sub-committee. If you have expertise in this area and would be willing to provide advice we would love to hear from you. If you want to know more about the School Council please contact me at [email protected] or on 62965422.
P&C We have a very active, but small, P&C which works hard to raise funds for the school. There are many fundraising activities planned for this year. This is a wonderful way to meet other parents in the school, make friends and help out. I encourage as many parents and community members as possible to attend the first P&C meeting of the year in the staffroom at 7:00pm on Monday 8 February. You will be very warmly welcomed! The fast paced meetings last for about an hour.
New Staff We welcomed a number of teachers new to Malvern Springs Primary School this year. We are delighted with the quality of our new teachers! They are:

FROM THE PRINCIPAL (cont)…..
Science For the first time this year Science will be a specialist area. This means all children from Pre-primary to Year 6 will have a specialist science lesson. Kindergarten children will have Science with their class teacher. Mrs Lambourne will be overseeing the Science program in term 1 while Mr Collopy is on leave. Malvern Springs uses the highly acclaimed Science program Primary Connections to guide what is taught in Science. If you have any queries please see your child’s teacher in the first instance. The Deputy Principals, Lyn Fussell and Penny Reynolds, or myself are happy to meet with you if you have queries. Extended Heat Wave All children are expected to attend school during the forecast heat wave next week. There will be no formal outdoor activities between recess and the end of the school day during the heat wave. Please make sure your children bring water to school and have their hats.
Regards
Dr Jenny Kuhn PRINCIPAL
DEPUTY’S DESK…..
Welcome back to the 2016 school year! A warm welcome to all of our families and teaching staff particularly those new to the school. If you see an unfamiliar face in the school make sure you say hello and welcome them to our school. Starting in a new school can be daunting for students, parents and teachers.
Being Safe Please remember that students are not to play on the playgrounds both before and after school. A reminder that the staff car park is to be used by staff only. Please use the available parking areas surrounding the school when collecting or dropping off your children. We have had too many close calls with children running through the car parks to get into cars.
Shade During the holidays shade structures were erected over two of the sandpits in the Early Childhood area. This will make these areas more user friendly and provide much needed shade over play areas to protect our students from the damaging effects of the sun. A big thank you to Rebecca Lister for entering our school into the Cancer Council Sun Smart competition. Malvern Springs won $10000 to spend on shade which we put towards the cost of the shade structures.
On Entry Assessment Program During week 3, 6 of our Pre-Primary students will be participating in the Department of Education’s On-entry Assessment Program. Parents of these students will be receiving a letter with more information prior to the assessment. Please contact admin if you have any questions.
No Waste Wednesday
Don’t forget our school’s ‘No Waste Wednesday’ each week.
Tips for packing a No Waste lunch:
• use a reusable lunchbox instead of a paper bag to carry your lunch
• get a reusable sandwich container so you won’t have to use plastic wrap
• use a refillable bottle for drinks
• buy items in bulk – avoid individually wrapped packets of biscuits, chips etc.
Pack Your Own No Waste Lunch
Remember, everything in a No Waste Lunch can be eaten, reused or composted!
Arriving at School
In the interests of student safety we ask that students do not arrive at school before 8:30am. Should parent work
arrangements require that students arrive at school prior to 8:30am we ask that you seek alternative arrangements for the
care of your child. Camp Australia operate before and after school care onsite at Malvern Springs Primary School. You may
contact them on 1300 105 343.

IN THE CLASSROOMS…..
Maggie Skip Counting the Malvern Springs Maths Magpie.
When next eating your peas...
try counting them by twos and threes.
When you are done, count them by ones.
You will find the answer the same.
And if you don’t start again!
Skip counting means you count on or back by groups of the same size.
Skip counting not only helps children see patterns in numbers, but also plays a big role in setting
the stage for learning their basic multiplication facts.
I am here to bring you
Maths tips, tricks and
news throughout the
year!
The payment of contributions is very important as they are used to supplement the cost of materials used by students in
their education program. The Contributions supplement the funding gained from other sources including the annual school
grant, P&C donations and State and Federal Grants.
The contribution schedule applies to all students from Kindergarten through to year 6:
$50 per child
The P & C Voluntary Contribution of $10 per family is sought to assist buying resources and equipment for the school.
Payments can be made through Qkr Payment App, by internet bank transfer, the front office by cash, cheque or EFTPOS. The
school bank details are: Malvern Springs Primary School BSB: 066 040 Account Number: 1990 3602 . Please include your
child’s name in the comment line when making bank transfers.

REGISTRAR…..
Hello from the Music Room My name is Mrs Alison Robeson and I love music! I believe the knowledge and enjoyment of music is a ‘Life Skill’ that is essential to happiness and well being. I come to Malvern Springs Primary School from Gingin District High School and Wattle Grove Primary School. I have taught instrumental music for 14 years with skills on the guitar, ukulele, drums, bass guitar and flute. I have conducted concert bands as well as several choirs that have performed at a variety of venues from primary schools through to Government House. I am thrilled to be working at Malvern Springs Primary School and look forward to generating a culture of singing and music in which your children will engage, connect and flourish.
Feel free to pop in after school for a chat and see the music room. Alison Robeson Music Teacher
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a set of research-based strategies used to increase quality of life and decrease
problem behaviour by explicitly teaching new skills and making changes in a student’s environment.
At Malvern Springs Primary School, teachers will be explicitly teaching observable behaviours that directly relate to the
four behaviour expectations. These observable behaviours are taught to students fortnightly and will be displayed on
classroom communication boards. Students who are seen demonstrating the behaviour expectations will be rewarded
with faction tokens which are entered into a weekly prize draw.

P&C UPDATE…..
Welcome back everyone!!
We hope you are all refreshed and have enjoyed the holidays. This year brings the promise of another fun school year, and we have a number of fun things to look forward to this Term, including the Trivia Night coming up on 1st April (our first event for the year), Mother's Day Cookbooks, Subway Meal Days, and Rollerzone Skate Parties. More information will come out about these fundraisers shortly.
The P&C has consulted with the school and come up with a few new goals for this year including a nature playground, air conditioning for the undercover area, some buddy benches, along with a few other smaller things. The P&C look forward to helping the school achieve these goals.
LED Community Message Board: In the next year we would also like to start planning for an electronic community message board outside the school to help keep the community informed of what is going on in the Malvern Springs school community. The first step towards this goal is to gather support from our community, which we seek to do through a petition. This will be up and running soon. Please take the time to show your support. The idea behind funding the project is to try and source funding through grant applications and corporate sponsorship. To do this we need to prove that there is demand for the project to go ahead. As this project is long term, we will keep you up-to-date with developments as they occur.
We are looking for new members to join this year to help us achieve all the fun events and help run our fundraisers. Anyone interested in joining is encouraged to come along to our General Meeting coming up on Monday 8th February (this Monday) @ 7PM in the Staff Room. We are also very keen to get each classroom represented with at least one P&C rep, so we can strengthen the communication in our schooling community. Position descriptions are up in each classroom. Following this, our AGM will be 21st March, same time and place.
Here's to another great school year!
