Fast Day: What to do, when

Newsletter announcements

Ask for help

Ask volunteers to read the Fast Day short talk at all Masses on the weekends of 13/14 February or 20/21 February. Or contact your local CAFOD office to see if they can provide a speaker, cafod.org.uk/uk

Identify volunteers to give out collection envelopes and prayer cards.

Give the children’s liturgy sheet to the children’s liturgy team.

Check that your collection envelopes have arrived (usually with your parish priest) and that there are enough. If they haven’t arrived by Friday 5 February, please tell us straight away!

Pin up the Fast Day poster.

Put an announcement in your parish newsletter about Fast Day.

Getting ready for the first Fast Day weekend

Ensure volunteers hand out envelopes before/after Mass, or staple them to the parish newsletter.

Make pens available to help people complete the Gift Aid panel on the envelope (Gift Aid is crucial: it accounts for nearly 9 per cent of Fast Day income).

Arrange to include the Fast Day prayer and prayer of intercession at Mass.

Check the speaker can still give the Lent Fast Day talk at Mass (unless the talk is being given the following weekend).

Fast Day Friday 19 February

Hold a simple soup lunch, with group reflection and say the Fast Day prayer.

Second Fast Day weekend

Have spare collection envelopes and prayer cards available.

Check that a speaker can still give the Lent Fast Day talk at Mass (unless done last weekend).

Collect Fast Day envelopes and donations after Mass.

After Fast Day

Empty the collection envelopes, count donations and check them against Gift Aid details (see page 6).

Send the donation form, donation cheque(s), Gift Aid slips and any sealed purple (‘Give Regularly’) envelopes back to CAFOD in the return envelope provided. Please don’t send cash in the post! Please send your donations ASAP to ensure they will be matched by the UK government. Donations received after 1 July will not be eligible.

Help us thank parishioners by placing the second announcement (below) in the parish newsletter and by displaying the ‘thank you’ message on the back of the Fast Day poster.

1. Week before Fast Day CAFOD Lent Fast Day: Friday 19 February

This Lent Fast Day, we have an opportunity to come together as a Catholic community to ensure girls living in the world’s poorest countries are free to change their lives by getting an education. CAFOD is working with local expert organisations around the world to bring water to family homes, so girls who used to spend hours collecting it every day, now have time for school, study and to play with their friends.

Fast Days are our opportunity to support that vital work. Collect your Fast Day envelope from church this week, and remember to fast on Lent Fast Day.

And there is very good news: the UK government has promised to match every pound and penny you give this Lent!

Please give as much as you can in next week’s collection, so that more girls around the world are able to live lives free from the burden of the long walk for water.

CAFOD will process your information and may contact you about our work. For details, visit cafod.org.uk/privacy

2. Week after Fast Day Thank you so much for supporting CAFOD Lent Fast Day

Together, our parish raised £___________ for CAFOD’s work. With UK Aid Match funding, this means we have ensured £________ can be used to bring water to the villages of even more of the world’s poorest families, meaning girls don’t have to walk hours every day to collect it. Now they are free to get an education and to pursue their dreams.

Thank you for your generous compassion for those living in poverty and for fasting in solidarity with them.

Lent 2016 Fast Day prayer

Merciful God,

source of all that is good,

wash us clean of all that

prevents us

from seeing you in each

of our sisters and brothers

around the world.

Transform our hearts

this Lent,

through our prayer, fasting

and almsgiving,

to be open to the needs of

all those who thirst.

Spirit of compassion,

move us to share with

all people

the water of life.

We ask this through Christ

our Lord,

Amen.

Prayer: Stephen Davies/CAFOD

First week of LentWe pray for world leaders: that they may act to protect God’s creation and ensure all people have access to these gifts. Lord, in your mercy…

Second week of LentWe pray for our sisters and brothers who thirst: that through working together, all our lives will be transformed, and all people will have access to God’s gift of water. Lord, in your mercy…

Third week of LentWe pray for our parish community: that by caring for the gift of water at home we may share in the joys, hopes, griefs and anxieties of our global family. Lord, in your mercy…

Fourth week of LentWe pray for ourselves: that our lives will be changed through the Father’s mercy to reach out to all those who thirst and need our love. Lord, in your mercy…

Fifth week of LentWe pray for our sisters and brothers throughout the world, especially those who have to walk for miles carrying water. May God inspire us to give the support they need to change their lives for the better. Lord, in your mercy…

Holy WeekWe pray for the Church around the world: as we enter Holy Week, may the passion, death and resurrection of Christ inspire us to work together for the good of all and of each individual, sharing in the gifts of God’s creation. Lord, in your mercy…

Make your money stretch even further…When you donate to CAFOD and fill in a Gift Aid form, you can increase the value of your gift by 25p for every £1 you give – at no extra cost to you! This extra 25 per cent means that we are able to support our partners and their life-changing work with more funding.

In the last year alone, we’ve raised £2.6m through Gift Aid donations for our work against poverty around the world.

How does it work?1. For CAFOD to claim Gift Aid, HM Revenue and Customs requires that CAFOD must be able to

match every donation to the donor, which is why it is important these forms are completed.

2. The donor must be a UK taxpayer (and have paid sufficient Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax), for CAFOD to be able to reclaim the basic rate of tax paid on their donation, however large or small.

3. Please use the CAFOD Fast Day envelopes, which have the Gift Aid slips on them, and encourage everyone who is eligible to fill in the Gift Aid slip when they donate.

Gift Aid will not be match funded as it’s already tax given back by the government on donations.

How to check Gift Aid donationsThe most important thing for your parish counters to do is to check the donation in the envelopes against the amount declared on the Gift Aid declaration.

n If the amount enclosed is the same as the amount declared, please do not change the Gift Aid declaration.

n If the amount enclosed is more than the amount declared, again, please do not change the Gift Aid declaration.

n If the amount enclosed is less than the amount declared, please change the amount written on the declaration to match the amount donated.

Please ensure all donations have been removed from bOTh envelopes.

Once the declarations have been checked, please send the completed Gift Aid declarations together with your cheque(s) and completed donation form to CAFOD. You can use the Freepost envelope provided or post to:

Freepost RSHJ-KJBY-YXLT, CAFOD, Romero House, 55 Westminster Bridge Road, London SE1 7JB
