A feather with the name of your loved oneSupporting Princess Alice Hospice is a wonderful way to remember the life of your loved one. A feather on our Giving Dove is a very special way to commemorate them and to help support our future patients and their families.

Each feather can be engraved and will commemorate a loved one that Princess Alice Hospice was able to care for. You can choose from three different sized feathers. The feather will be engraved with their name and will be placed on the Dove for twelve months.

How to sponsor a feather on the Giving DovePlease complete the form on the following pages. Costs are based on your personalised feather being on our Dove for twelve months. You can choose to sponsor a feather with a monthly amount for twelve months OR in a single payment.

Towards the end of this period, we will contact you and you can decide whether to have the feather returned to you to keep, or you can choose to sponsor your feather on the Dove for a further twelve months.

The Princess Alice Hospice Giving DoveOur Dove has been created for us by a local artist, Oliver Russell, who has worked in close collaboration with the Hospice to produce a metal work sculpture with different sized feathers.

Oliver says, “It was fascinating and rewarding to try to create an object that would be imbued with such symbolism for so many people. The wonderful comments I’ve heard make me very happy that the Dove has great meaning for the families and carers supported by the Hospice.”

How the Giving Dove was madeThe Dove’s designer, Oliver Russell, is a graduate of the University of the Creative Arts in Farnham with an MA in Metalwork and specialises in creating unique architectural metalwork. Derived from natural forms, his work ranges from repairing wrought iron garden benches to building spiral staircases, balconies and balustrades and to internal and external bespoke sculptures like the Giving Dove.

“This project has been a great experience for me,” says Oliver. “I like to work in close collaboration with my clients. Working with the Hospice team, I know we’ve always had a clear understanding about the importance and meaning of what we were trying to achieve.

“After the initial briefing meeting, my first step was to produce an early design drawing which I superimposed on to a site photograph. The team at the Hospice could then see how my design might look in situ and make suggestions and refinements. I followed this with a second more detailed model (including the feathers!) and followed that with a small 3D model in card – and then another in aluminium. Finally, I created a very detailed design specification covering all aspects of the work from the Dove’s exact dimensions, the feather design and attachment, the material, finishes and the approach to installation.”

With everything agreed, Oliver went on to build all the elements for our Dove in his forge in Hampshire, using 4mm stainless steel and a variety of techniques ranging from traditional blacksmithing to laser cutting. In all, the work took over 6 weeks and Oliver took great pride in ensuring the Giving Dove was properly installed in the Hospice reception area.

Supporting Princess Alice Hospice through the Giving Dove

We feel the Dove reflects our work and care and provides a special way of commemorating the lives of loved ones. The Giving Dove is situated in the main reception of the Hospice, making it available to patients, relatives, visitors, staff and volunteers to view at any time.
