Term 1 Week 2 - Tuesday, 4th February 2020 Issue 2
Your child learns so much when you spend time with them. Even with a busy schedule, you can turn a little bit of time into a learning experience for your child. Try these tips to get more out of your time together.
Seize the moment!
There are lots of ‘little moments’ during the day that give you a chance to connect with your child – when you’re in the car, at the dinner table, or even doing the housework. By chatting about what’s happening at school and in the family, and how they’re feeling, you’re building your child’s self-esteem and conversation skills. You can also build their responsibility and independence by asking them to help out around the house while you chat – for example by unpacking the dishwasher, folding the laundry or making the beds. Your child might think you’re making them work, but really, you’re developing their teamwork and conversation skills. Make it count
When talking with your child, try not to jump in or correct them – just really listen and try to understand what they are saying to you. Show your child you are interested in what they are saying by asking questions – What do they think? How do they feel? Show that you’re listening by making eye contact, repeating what they’ve said, and smiling when appropriate. https://www.learningpotential.gov.au/time-with-your-child-make-it-count

Welcome to Week 2 at Chinchilla State School.
Thank you to the many new and continuing families who have worked so diligently along-side us to promote the importance of regular school attendance. On Day 13 I will be submitting our student numbers to Central Office. It is on this day this year that our final staffing allocation will be given to our school. A reminder that classes are not finalised until Day 13. While still on the very important concept of school attendance, I would like to remind parents of the clear links between regular daily attendance and academic achievement. Our teachers work very diligently to ensure solid sequential teaching and learning programs are developed and delivered with integrity. Students who frequently have days off struggle to maintain focus and are always behind their peers as they are continually missing vital information delivered through daily lessons. Please ensure that you are encouraging your child to attend school every day where possible.
As we enter another school year rich with academic opportunities, our Student Services team is working to ensure a range of learning support and extension programs are readily available to students who require them. Due to the significant number of students across our school I have instructed our team to begin looking at students who are eligible for these intensive programs, starting with those who are attending on average at least 90% of the time. It is very difficult to engage students in these programs if their attendance at school hinders the successful implementation. All students will continue to receive differentiated approaches in classrooms on a daily basis. Students who require very intensive support outside of the classroom, will be prioritised based on their level of commitment to school. This 90% threshold will also apply to speech language and other highly sought after programs that have a number of students on a waiting list.
Remember that one harmless day off to go shopping with Mum or to work with Dad per week, equates to 40 school days off per year, which is almost one complete school term. Our school attendance target is 95%. In 2019 our school attendance record was 87.7%.
Our school Attendance Officer and our class teachers will be in constant contact with families throughout 2020 to assist in ensuring every student is at school where possible. Please continue to communicate with the school if your child is sick or is away from school for other reasons. So far this year, the overall student attendance rate is 95%, congratulations students and families for making a terrific start to the 2020 school year- Everyday counts! We look forward to working closely with you this year and we thank you for your ongoing efforts in supporting our school.

This week’s value: Responsibility & Safety This week’s rule: Travelling to and from school Students are explicitly taught an expected behaviour for the school environment each week. Last week the students’ focus lesson was on sun safety. Many students travel to and from the school by bus, some ride bikes or scooters, others walk and many students travel by car. This week our focus lesson is on responsibility and safety when travelling to and from school. After assembly on Monday, those students who travel by bus met in the bus shelter and those who ride a bike or scooter met at the bike rack for their value’s lesson while all other students returned to class for their value’s lesson. All students who ride a bike or scooter must wear a helmet and lock their bike/scooter to the racks provided. They must enter the school grounds only through the school gate near the groundsman's shed along Colamba St. They must not ride in the school grounds or along the footpath of Colamba St for the safety of all of our school community. Students who travel by bus must go directly to the bus lines from their classroom at the end of the day. The buses are on a very tight schedule transporting students from all schools. If your child travels by bus, please inform the school office. During the first fortnight, all class teachers will be establishing routines to enable all students in every class across the school to have the opportunity to reach their potential and to enjoy their peers’ companionship along the way. A goal of these lessons is to help establish a sense of belonging for every student in every class. Chinchilla State School’s P&C Association supports the PBL program in the school.

For new parents and as a reminder to all parents, there are a number of procedures and routines to help our school run smoothly. Listed below are some school routines:- Parking at the School There is a school zone around Chinchilla State School for drivers to reduce their speed to 40km for the safety of our school children. A designated bus zone in Bell Street is from the corner of Colamba St through to the house next to the school in Bell Street. No parking is permitted in this area from 8:30am to 9:00am and again at 3:00pm to 3:30pm. This is for the safety of our school children. We ask all families not to encourage their children to cross any roads other than at the corner. This is dangerous behaviour. Crossing from the middle of the road near parked cars or between busses is risky behaviour which can result in serious injury. We ask families to support the school in teaching their children to cross the road in a safe manner. Children are only to cross Bell Street or Colamba Street at the corners with the Crossing Supervisors. To avoid any accident, we ask parents not to direct their child across the middle of these streets. All students must follow the direction of these supervisors when crossing the road. This is for the safety of our school children. In Colamba Street there are two designated parking bays for disabled persons and another one parking bay for handicapped drivers. You must display an authorised disabled parking permit in your windshield to park in these areas. This is for the safety of our school children and school community. To avoid any accident, we also ask parents not to double park along Colamba Street. This is for the safety of our school children and school community.
Do you wait behind the line for the supervisor to open the crossing? Do you wait for the supervisor to blow the whistle twice before crossing? Do you know that one blast of the whistle requires you to take immediate direction from the supervisor? If you answered “Yes” to the above questions you are doing the right thing.

As Chinchilla State School is committed to student, staff and community wellbeing. Within our curriculum, students learn about Zones of Regulation. Zones of Regulation teaches children about self-regulation and how to strengthen their self-regulation skills. Self-regulation can go by many names, such as self-control, self-management, and impulse control. Self-regulation is an essential skill in life, and in all learning environments. Research shows that children who can regulate their own emotion and attention are better ready to learn and thrive. Zones of Regulation groups all the ways that children feel and act into four “Zones”. Blue Zone—when your body is running slowly, such as when you are tired, sick, sad or bored. Green Zone—when you are ready “good to go.” You feel happy, calm and focused. Yellow Zone—when you feel your engine running high, such as when you are frustrated, overwhelmed, silly, wiggly, excited, worried, anxious, or surprised. Red Zone—is when you have “flipped your lid.” You have extreme feelings such as terror, uncontrolled anger, aggression, or elation. It is very important to know that none of the Zones is “bad”- All of the Zones are expected at one time or another. Things parents can do to practice the Zones of Regulation at home:
● Ask your child/ren to tell you about the Zones. ● Ask them what Zone (Blue, Green, Yellow or Red) they are in when they are having a good day, a sad moment, or are experiencing frustration. ● Talk about what Zone you are in and how that feels (face tense, hands in fists, feeling sad, mad, etc.) ● Talk about strategies to help your child move back to the Green Zone and when they might need help with that.
Together, we can help fill up your child/rens tool kit with skills for handling strong emotions, dealing with mistakes, solving problems and much more. As adults, when we model the Zones and use the same language, we help our child/ren develop habits that will serve them into their teen years and beyond.
