ROBYN GIBSONRobyn Gibson is an emerging artist and recent graduate of the New York Academy of Art. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Louisville in 2014. Since receiving her MFA in 2018, Robyn has been developing her own style and multidimensional art practice. Larger-than-life-sized bold, gestural charcoal figures

on canvas, a lyrical writing style meant to pack a punch, and quick textural figure sculptures all convey movement that is important to her work. As an artist obsessed with self-portraiture and the exploration of her insecurities and identity, Robyn constantly thinks of black identity, black bodies, and what it means to be authentic. During this time of racial unrest, working to claim ownership of her own space is important in her work. She is influenced by not only her own experiences, but also artists like Toyin Ojih Odutola and Shantell Martin who deal with ownership of space and identity.

Jesse will demonstrate the use of rivets and hand fabricating of a pin back and clasp for brooches. This dynamic workshop will start with a field trip to look for unique materials. Students can begin with a design, select distinct materials, and complete the composition or be inspired by materials and consider the best way to build the composition.

Saturday – Monday3-days, December 12 – 14, 2019Tuition: $410* | Lab Fee: $40

Jesse Bert creates sculptural jewelry incorporating many different materials and techniques. He creates unique tools and equipment that gives the works delicate texture and design. Jesse teaches metalsmithing and jewelry techniques to students of all skill levels in his private studio in San Miguel, an annual workshop in Mexico, and around the world. After earning his MFA in Jewelry and Metalsmithing from East Carolina University in North Carolina, Jesse relocated to Mexico in 2006. Jesse is an adjunct professor at the Technological Institute of Monterrey in the city of Guadalajara.

PORTRAIT WORKSHOPSTEVEN ASSAELFocus on an analytical and emotive approach to painting portraits with an emphasis on color, value, proportion, form, and light. The workshop will be devoted to drawing, mapping out the under layer in values, and developing the color in your paintings. Anatomy, movement, and interpretation of what you see as a model poses change will be covered. The class will cover the Alla Prima technique which involves both scumbling and glazing. Each day will consist of lectures, demos, and one-on-one critiques.

Wednesday – Sunday 5 days, January 29 – February 2, 2020Tuition: $750*

Steven Assael attended Pratt Institute and teaches at the School of Visual Arts in NYC. His work focuses on the human figures rendered in glowing relief by gentle beams of warm and cool light. He balances naturalism with a romanticism that permeates his paintings and drawings. Assael’s work was the subject of a one-person exhibition at the Naples Museum of Art in FL, he exhibited in “New Old Masters,” curated by Donald Kuspit, at the National Museum in Gdansk, Poland, and exhibited across the US. His work is in the permanent collections of museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. Assael is represented by Forum Gallery, NYC.

ABSTRACTION: LANDSCAPE AS SOURCEJORDAN WOLFSONThis workshop will explore both plein air painting and the process of abstraction. During the mornings we will work outdoors in a traditional plein air approach—developing tonal relationships, searching for a convincing sense of space and light, and applying paint in different ways. In the afternoons we will work indoors on one canvas for the duration of the four days, using our morning paintings as source material for an ongoing and improvisational discovery of abstract painting. Risk and play will be encouraged.

Monday – Thursday 4 days, March 2 – 5, 2020Tuition: $625*

Jordan Wolfson is a contemporary painter, born and raised in Los Angeles. He received his MFA from Yale University School of Art. He has exhibited in the US and abroad and has received numerous awards including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, the Ingram Merrill Foundation Grant, and a Purchase Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was a fellow at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA and the Ballinglen Art Foundation in Ireland. He is currently represented by Prographica/KDR in Seattle, Rothschild Fine Arts in Tel Aviv, and Artspace in Jerusalem. Wolfson wrote the article “How Painting Can Help Save the World, Actually” published on The Awakened Eye and PaintingPerceptions.com.

DRAWING THE BEAUTY OF FORMS IN OUR LANDSCAPEALEXANDER SHUNDIExplore ways to understand and celebrate the magnificent and mysterious organic forms that our Florida landscape offers us through drawing. We will discover lines and observe contrasting light and shade in surreal shapes found in nature. Approaches to reflect natural harmony and balance will be discussed. With the humble manipulation of pencil and paper we will understand and present images that attract us, pass through our being and senses, and then magically translate on paper.

Wednesday – Sunday 5 days, March 18 – 22, 2020Tuition: $625

Alexander Shundi was born in Correggio, Italy in 1944 and lived in Parma, Italy until his family moved to the United States in 1957. He received his Bachelors and Master’s degrees from Yale University, graduating in 1969 with his Master of Fine Arts in Painting. He also received further education in Milan, Paris, and Connecticut. Alexander’s works are in many public and private collections in the United States and abroad. He lives and works in a converted 1850's church with his wife Elizabeth Hill, also a painter, and their two children. He has traveled for twenty years exploring the American Southwest, with particular focus on both ancient and current Pueblo culture, art, and mythology.

STONE CARVING: TRANSFORMING ALABASTERLUCIO CHIURULLAAlabaster stone has two dominant traits, translucency and compactness. Translucency provides the stone’s beauty while compactness offers softness. These combined make the material attractive to use for both beginner and advanced stone carvers. Beginning students will use hand tools to form a mortar and pestle while more experienced will practice techniques from the traditional to abstract where pneumatic tools may be employed.

Monday – Friday5 days, March 16th – 20th, 2020Tuition: $625* | Material Fee: $45 for stone and carving tools

Lucio Chiurulla was born in 1972 in Perugia, Italy. After studying at the Art School and the Academy of Belle Art in Perugia, he began his journey into sculpting in 1990. Lucio works with marble, granite, and other stone, taking inspiration from ancient Roman, Greek, and Medieval statues and mosaics as well as modern sculpture. He has held several exhibitions, among them exhibitions organized by Ken’s Art Gallery in Florence and West Palm Beach (1999-2001), the Archaeological Park in Populonia (Tuscany), Cavour Art Festival in Terni (2001), Galleria Il Sole Centro d’Arte in Perugia (2003); Palazzo Morelli Fine Art in Todi (Umbria) (2005-2011), and Carla Mancini Art Gallery in Perugia (2016-2017). He currently has his studio near the Trasimeno Lake in Umbria, where he lives and works.
