MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY
11TH JULY 2019
What is it?
u MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY is when thousands of young people spend a day getting involved in the community and helping others
u The day will take place on Thursday 11th July 2019
u This is your opportunity to get involved in helping your community or people in the community. This can be done either in or out of school
What can I do?You could get involved in a variety of ways:
u 1. Family or friend support – eg. spending the day with an elderly relative
u 2. Local organisation support – eg. volunteering help at their old primary school, a nursery, care home or charity shop
u 3. School related/organised - eg. in school. (WHS) A school organised activity in the community
Why are we doing this?
uP – ProfessionalismuR – RespectuI – IntegrityuD – DeterminationuE - Empathy
What can I not do?u It is not a day off – you have to be involved in an activityu You can not do something and get paid –u You can not help out with a private company – unless the
basis of that company is helping other people.
u The activity has to take most of the day
u It has to be approved by both your parents and the school. If we do not feel that this is really ‘making a
difference’ - then it will not be allowed
Other questionsu Do I have to do this?u Yes. – However if you can’t think of anything then we will find
opportunities for you in schoolu Can I volunteer at the weekend – and take the Thursday off?u No – It has to be done on this dayu Can I volunteer for a longer period of time?u No – But this can be used for your Duke of Edinburgh awardu I already help out with an organisation – can I use them again for
this day?u Yes: But you will need to complete the same formu How long should I spend doing this activity?u This depends on the activity. We are not expecting you to work flat
out from 8:45 – 3:10. However it should be a least a couple of hours
What do I do next?u If you have an idea of a specific organisation you would like to volunteer
with – then you need to organise this. However, please do not 'cold call' organisations!
u You will need to complete the ‘Make a difference day’ form and it has to be signed by the organisation and your parents –
u If you would like to organise via your family – then you need to discuss this with your family soon
u If you can not do any of the above – you will be expected to take part in a school volunteering project
What will I do if I can't organise an activity?
u You will turn up to school as usual
u Last year we split into teams and did two different activities
u We worked with the 'WilmslowClean Team' and picked up litter around Wilmslow
u We went to the Carrs and helped with some 'Balsam bashing'
What happens after the day?u You will have a wonderful glow of self
satisfaction
u You will need to write a report – showing what you did and how it made a difference. Photographs and supporting statements will be useful
u It could be a useful link for the future. Maybe future employment, volunteering or work experience opportunities could be linked to your activity
