AbstractThe oral microbes along with dental plaque play a vital role in development of periodontal diseases.Dental plaque is a general term used for the diverse microbial community (predominantly bacteria) found on the tooth surface,embedded in a matrix of plymers of bacterial and salivary origin.Gram negative bacteria such as Tannerella forsythia (Bacteroides forsythus), Porphyromonas gingivalis, dan Treponema denticola are found in significantly higher levels in patient with chronis and aggressive periodontitis.The clinical use of antibiotics and other antimicrobial agents,as adjuvants for the treatment of periodontitis,has been extensively investigated in the past decade including miswak (Salvadora percisa).miswak (Salvadora percisa) is one of the most commontly used medical plants for oral hygiene among global muslim community.The root of the shrub miswak have been demonstrated to possess antimicrobial activity.The antimicrobial activity of miswak can inhibit bacteria pathogen caused periodontal diseases.
