When we started Makai Ocean Lifestyle Magazine over ten years ago, we noted that the current media at the time, did not engage the public with its coverage of water sports. This held true, whether it was surfing, canoe paddling, fishing, kayaking, or the many other water sports which Hawaii offers the world. While I was growing up, I observed my mother, Martha Luna Goo (currently retired), as an editor of a now long-gone publication, for a long-gone construction company. I remember watching her taking the photos, writing the features, doing the layouts at night, and dropping off copy to the typesetters. Additionally, she would be respon-sible for taking the corrected proofs to the printers. That was a long time ago, and these efforts were on behalf of the Dillingham Corporation’s “Dilco Digest.” I remember that she also gave me a quarterly magazine from the Exxon Corporation. The photos were top-notch, and I guess the articles were also great! Looking back, this was my first exposure to the publishing business. My background is in newspaper or print advertising, so it was only natural to start a “print” publication! I remember sitting in our newspaper sales office, daydreaming of how all of this was going to come about. At the time, the corporation that I worked for was given several ideas on some ways to incorporate “surfing” into the main-stream media. Surfing in the California area was covered and sponsored by huge corporate media, such as the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach by The Orange County Regis-ter. I believed that we could do the same. The idea fell upon deaf ears time and time again, being met with, “That’s a good idea…” or “Maybe we can do that later…” ( yada yada yada!). When the newspapers split from their joint operating agreement, the Advertiser and Star Bulletin once again became separate entities. The new sales administration for the Star Bulletin, which I chose to work for at the time of the split, was more apt to listen to new ideas, as they were now “compelled” to seek out new and creative ways to compete with the much larger daily paper, the Advertiser. The Triple Crown of Surfing, which is held on the North Shore each winter, was a great place to start! We met with the necessary entities to obtain permission, gathered content, sold ads to fund the project, and “voila,” Hawaii media was finally involved with professional surfing for the very first time, aside from the occasional surf photo in the “Island Life” sections. I thought to myself, “Maybe we could take this one step further, and have a “water sport” type of publication which features all the island sports. After all, we have some of the most talented water people in the world. Yes, the world!”After the initial run of the Triple Crown of Surfing, it caught on with “bosses” and received the response that I knew it would. After I left to start Makai Magazine, the

two papers competing with each other ended up battling for the Triple Crown’s attention. In 2004, we decided to make a go of it! I met with just the people who would guide me in the right direction. I met with Jim Cook, who started a few regional publica-tions, the most successful being “Hawaii Remodeling.” He had recently sold his magazine to a larger publisher, and shared with me some great advice about start-ing a publication. I also contacted Reid Fujita, who started the former H3O surf magazine, and who now owns several Cin-namon Girl boutique stores throughout the islands. He gave me some great advice, saying, “You’re crazy, but have fun with it!” Looking back, these people shared some insight as to what I was getting myself into! Yes, it can be crazy at times, but I am also having fun with it.Job one was assembling some of Hawaii’s most talented people in print media ; graphic artists, paginators, designers, and most importantly, writers. Each one had some kind of relationship with the ocean, and they were already in the business, which made it easy. There were many ups and downs at the very start, which is not uncommon today, but it’s your approach in meeting these adversities that will keep you at the top of your game. This is done with the assistance of writers like Diane Ako-Hansen, Roz Makaula, Alison Stewart, Katie Young, and one who is still with us, a high school junior with remarkable writing

skills, Alyssa Navares.“I remember older business mentors would always say, “Your first year of business is the hardest,” “Your second year is always the toughest” or, “If you make it past three years you will be okay,” and so on… Here is my advice: It’s tough, but you have to be tougher. You need to flex with the adversity that comes with change. My former men-tor and sales manager Katy Villiers said, “Change is constant.” The past ten years has been a time of constant change, much of it great! There are two parts that I love most about this job. The first is probably the more exciting part of creating Makai Maga-zine, which is getting to participate in the process and the possibility of exposing the talent pool we have here, and sharing their talent with a larger main readership. With-out that exposure, we might deprive our community of a special talent right here in our islands. The second reason that this job keeps me excited is that I am able to meet people out there, listen to their ideas, and gener-ally just meet people who are appreciative of having a publication that highlights our community. We don’t try to dominate other magazines. In fact, we have actually assisted with some start-ups and helped them get on their way, just as I was helped during Makai’s infancy. Not just magazines, but different busi-nesses and products have grown on these pages, helping to create more successful

businesses.Another exiting part is the opportunity to meet some of our greatest water people! Looking back, we have featured Buffalo Keaulana, Gerry Lopez, Ben Aipa, Nainoa Thompson, and the list goes on. These folks are actually heroes of mine while I was growing up.When we started, we wanted to make a big impression on the ocean community, so we contacted Buffalo Keaulana and got Bunky Bakutis to write the very first article for Makai! We obtained a classic photo from Natalie Walker, and the rest is history. From that point, we have featured hundreds of Hawaii’s water people, and they have graced the pages of Makai each month. Each one of these people have made our islands, which are already a special place, even better. We started covering many spectacular events from Buffalo’s Big Board Surfing Classic, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, Paddling Athletes Association (PAA) Kaiwi Channel OC-1 Solo & Kaiwi Channel Relay, Na Ohana o Hui Wa’a, Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association (OHCRA), Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Ocean-fest, Waikiki Paddle Festival, Na Wahine O Ke Kai, Molokai Hoe and many more. We have also followed other events such

as the Battle of the Paddle Waikiki, PAA OC-1 Races, Rell Sunn’s Menehune con-test. (Wow that’s a lot of events!) We’ve been there, covering the Polynesian Voyage Societies Hokule’a Voyage to Micronesia and Japan, as well. It surely is a privilege to partner with these great events at one time or another, and we continue the privilege of maintaining relationships with them today. Over the past ten years, it has been such an adventure and a joy when someone comes up to us with a word of encourage-ment, saying: “Love your mag!” or “Thank

MAHALO NUI ! On behalf of the Oahu Hawaiian Ca-noe Racing Association and the Hawaiian Airlines Moloka’i Hoe Race Commit-tee, we would like to thank all clubs, teams and participants, along with all the supporters who helped make the race a success. Mahalo to all the teams who traveled from afar including Tahiti, Aus-tralia, New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Canada, France and the USA. Mahalo to all our local teams representing all the islands for their continued support in keeping our Hawaiian sport of waʻa alive. A special“mahalo” to the residents of Moloka’i for their gracious hospitality throughout the years. We had 103 registered crews with 102 who crossed the finish line in Waikiki. It was definitely a day of awesome competition on the water with some of the best athletes from across the globe battling it out all the way to the finish line. This year fielded athletes from ages 16 thru 78 years old compet-ing in eight divisions. I feel honored to be a part of the World Championship of long distance canoe racing. Mahalo also goes out to our valuable sponsors, official boats, medical teams, media crews and volunteers. Our committee and all of Hawaiʻi invite all participants to return for an even better experience next year. I look forward to seeing you back as we start planning for the Hawaiian Airlines Molokaʻi Hoe 2015.

SUNSET BEACH, HAWAII, Sweet poetic justice was delivered at Sunset Beach as Kauai's Danny Fuller won the first event of his 15-year career at the HIC PRO and qualified for the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, at Haleiwa. It all went down in triple-overhead surf at a venue fa-mous for being unforgiving, but Fuller, 32, was committed and sharp on his backhand, posting a clear-cut victory in the four-man Final.

never tasted victory. That all changed. It was an emotional win on many levels: surfing with a Final full of close friends from Hawaii; winning at home after so many years; and qualifying for the Vans Triple Crown. But this year has been particularly tough for Fuller. His mother was diagnosed with cancer early this year and he withdrew from much competition to tend to family. To dedicate the win to his mother, his wife and young daughter was a bright moment. "My mom has sacrificed so much for me along the way, so to dedicate this win to her means so much," Fuller said. Up against three former HIC PRO champions in the final - Fred Patacchia, Mason Ho and Billy Kemper - Danny surfed five rounds en-route to victory and had a feeling this might just be the day. "This moment feels surreal, but I feel like I've earned it. I finally realized that if I can surf at my best performance, I can be as good as anybody. "I've made finals at Pipeline and here before, but there's only once I was in all three events of the Triple Crown and unfortunately I suffered a back injury right before it. It's Hawaii. Dreams are made and broken. I've just got to keep it positive and do my best. "The ocean has been the giver of every-thing to me in my life and I'm so grateful for that." In addition to surfing, Fuller is also an established ocean photographer with collections in galleries in New York and Los Angeles.

Established Samsung Galaxy ASP World Championship Tour competitor Fred Patacchia finished runner-up; third was defending HIC PRO champion Mason Ho - whose result saw him clinch the ASP Hawaii Regional Champion title; and fourth was Maui's Billy Kemper. Fuller has long been respected as one of Hawaii's most talented chargers and versa-tile surfers in everything from giant surf to dredging barrels. He has made several finals at Pipeline and Sunset over the years, but

PA‘A Halloween Race Ignites the OC-1 Season Once again, the one man paddling season commences with the Paddling Athletes Association, aka PAA, Halloween Race. In its 6th year of Halloween fun, this race was anticipated just about the time Molokai Hoe was getting underway. Each year Race Director Manny Kulukulualani assembles each of the PAA races beginning with this race, and ending the one-man season with the Kaiwi Channel Solo OC-1 World Championships in late spring, this year it will be held on June 13, 2015. The race from Maunalua Bay to Kaimana Beach features a costume contest, where the winner this year could choose from a Makana Alii Paddle or Maui Jim sunglasses. With most of the paddlers in costume, making the eight mile race, with so many talented entries for the costume portion, this years winner was Eulogio Mangasar. Besides the spectacle of the dress up portion of the race, all the paddlers take their racing serious as this year PAA introduces a Win-ter Series point system, with the point from the Halloween race, along with the November 15, Thanksgiving Food Drive race, and the PAA Toys for Tots race, on December 6 where the winner of the series will be announced.
