Core Center

Click on the Core Center icon in the main menu and the Core Center program willbe enabled.

CoreCenter is just like your PC doctor that can detect, view and adjust the PChardware and system status during real time operation.In the left side it shows the current system status including the Vcore, 3.3V, +5V and12V. In the right side it shows the current PC hardware status such as the CPU &system temperatures and all fans speeds.

When you click the red triangles in the left and right sides, two sub-menus will openfor users to adjust the thresholds of system to send out the warning messages.

Left-wing: Current system statusIn the left sub-menu, you can configure the settings of FSB, Vcore, MemoryVoltage and AGP Voltage by clicking the radio button next to each item and make itavailable (the radio button will be lighted as yellow when selected), use the “+”and “-” buttons to adjust, then click “OK” to apply the changes. Then you can click“Save” to save the values you just configured.Also you may click “Auto” to start testing the maximum CPU overclocking value.The CPU FSB will automatically increase the testing value until the PC reboots. Oryou may click “Default” to restore the default values.

Right-wing: PC hardware status during real time operationIn the right sub-menu, here you can configure the PC hardware status such asCPU & system temperatures and fan speeds. You may use the scroll bars to adjusteach item, then click “OK” to apply the changes. The values you set for thetemperatures are the maximum thresholds for the system for warnings, and thevalue for fan speeds are the minimum thresholds.

Hardware Setup

This chapter provides you with the information abouthardware setup procedures. While doing the installation,be careful in holding the components and follow theinstallation procedures. For some components, if youinstall in the wrong orientation, the components will notwork properly.

Use a grounded wrist strap before handling computercomponents. Static electr ic ity may damage thecomponents.

Always unplug the power cord beforeinserting any add-on card or module.

Central Processing Unit: CPUThe mainboard supports Intel® Pentium 4 Series processor. The mainboard uses aCPU socket called LGA775. When you are installing the CPU, make sure to install thecooler to prevent overheating. If you do not have the CPU cooler, contact your dealerto purchase and install them before turning on the computer.(For the latest information about CPU, please visit http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=cpuform)

1. Overheating will seriously damage the CPU and system, always makesure the cooling fan can work properly to protect the CPU fromoverheating.

2. While replacing the CPU, always turn off the ATX power supply orunplug the power supply ’s power cord from grounded outlet first toensure the safety of CPU.

3. According to the Intel® North Bridge 945-family chipset spec,thismainboard is designed to support overclocking. However, please makesure your components are able to tolerate such abnormal setting, whiledoing overclocking. Any attempt to operate beyond product specifica-tions is not recommended. We do not guarantee the damages or riskscaused by inadequate operation or beyond product specifications.

CPU & Cooler InstallationWhen you are installing the CPU, make sure the CPU has a cooler attached onthe top to prevent overheating. If you do not have the cooler, contact your dealerto purchase and install them before turning on the computer. Meanwhile, do notforget to apply some silicon heat transfer compound on CPU before installing the heatsink/cooler fan for better heat dispersion. Follow the steps below to install the CPU &cooler correctly. Wrong installation will cause the damage of your CPU & mainboard.

2. Remove the cap from lever hingeside (as the arrow shows).

1. The CPU socket has a plastic cap onit to protect the contact from damage.Before you install the CPU, alwayscover it to protect the socket pin.

1. Confirm if your CPU cooler is firmly installed before turning on yoursystem.

2. Do not touch the CPU socket pins to avoid damaging.3. The availability of the CPU land side cover depends on your CPU packing.

6. After confirming the CPU directionfor correct mating, put down theCPU in the socket housing frame.Be sure to grasp on the edge ofthe CPU base. Note that the align-ment keys are matched.

8. Cover the load plate onto thepackage.

7. Visually inspect if the CPU isseated well into the socket. If not,take out the CPU with pure verticalmotion and reinstall.

1. Check the information in H/W Monitor in BIOS (Chapter 3) for the CPUtemperature.

2. Whenever CPU is not installed, always protect your CPU socket pin withthe plastic cap covered (shown in step 1) to avoid damaging.

10. Align the holes on the mainboardwith the heatsink. Push down thecooler unti l i ts four c lips getwedged into the holes of themainboard.

12. Turn over the mainboard to con-firm that the clip-ends are cor-rectly inserted.

11. Press the four hooks down to fas-ten the cooler. Then rotate the lock-ing switch (refer to the correct di-rection marked on it) to lock thehooks.

9. Press down the load lever lightlyonto the load plate, and then se-cure the lever with the hook underretention tab.

MemoryThese DIMM slots are used for installing memory modules.(For more information on compatible components, please visit http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=testreport)

Due to chipset limitations, to enable dual channel mode or single channel mode,installing memory modules should refer to the following table.

You can barely see the golden finger if the memory module is properlyinserted in the DIMM slot.

Important

Installing Memory Modules1. The memory module has only one notch on the center and will only fit in the right

orientation.2. Insert the memory module vertically into the DIMM slot. Then push it in until the

golden finger on the memory module is deeply inserted in the DIMM slot.3. The plastic clip at each side of the DIMM slot will automatically close.

Due to chipset specifications restrictions, in order to avoid system isnot bootable or memory identification errors. Please do not install twodouble-side memory modules in the same channel (the same colorDIMM slots).

Important

1. DDR2 memory modules are not interchangeable with DDR and theDDR2 standard is not backwards compatible. You should always installDDR2 memory modules in the DDR2 DIMM slots.

2. In Dual-Channel mode, make sure that you install memory modules ofthe same type and density in different channel DIMM slots.

3. To enable successful system boot-up, always insert the memory modulesinto the DIMM1 first.

Power SupplyThe mainboard supports ATX power supply for the power system. Before insertingthe power supply connector, always make sure that all components are installedproperly to ensure that no damage will be caused.

ATX 24-Pin Power Connector: ATX1This connector allows you to connect an ATX 24-pin power supply. To connect theATX 24-pin power supply, make sure the plug of the power supply is inserted in theproper orientation and the pins are aligned. Then push down the power supply firmlyinto the connector.

The mainboard provides connectors to connect to FDD, IDE HDD, case, LAN, andUSB Ports.

Floppy Disk Drive Connector: FDD1The mainboard provides a standard floppy disk drive connector that supports 360K,720K, 1.2M, 1.44M and 2.88M floppy disk types.

Fan Power Connectors: CPUFAN1/SYSFAN2/PWRFAN2The CPUFAN1 (processor fan), SYSFAN2 and PWRFAN2 support system cooling fanwith +12V. It supports four/three-pin head connector. When connecting the wire tothe connectors, always take note that the red wire is the positive and should beconnected to the +12V, the black wire is Ground and should be connected to GND. Ifthe mainboard has a System Hardware Monitor chipset on-board, you must use aspecially designed fan with speed sensor to take advantage of the CPU fan control.

Hard Disk Connector: IDE1The mainboard has 32-bit Ultra DMA 66/100 IDE controllers integrated in the chipsIntel ICH7, which supports PIO & Bus Master operation modes and it can connect upto two Ultra ATA drives.

IDE1 can connect a Master and a Slave drive. You must configure second hard driveto Slave mode by setting the jumper accordingly.

If you install two hard disks on cable, you must configure the seconddrive to Slave mode by setting its jumper. Refer to the hard disk docu-mentation supplied by hard disk vendors for jumper setting instructions.

This chapter provides the information on the BIOS Setupprogram and allows you to configure the system foroptimum use.

You may need to run the Setup program when: An error message appears on the screen during the

system booting up, and requests you to run SETUP. You want to change the default settings for custom-

ized features.

Power on the computer and the system will start POST (Power On Self Test) process.When the message below appears on the screen, press <DEL> key to enter Setup.

Press DEL to enter SETUPIf the message disappears before you respond and you still wish to enter Setup,restart the system by turning it OFF and On or pressing the RESET button. You mayalso restart the system by simultaneously pressing <Ctrl>, <Alt>, and <Delete> keys.

Entering Setup

1. The items under each BIOS category described in this chapter areunder continuous update for better system performance. Therefore,the description may be slightly different from the latest BIOS andshould be held for reference only.

2. Upon boot-up, the 1st line appearing after the memory count is theBIOS version. It is usually in the format:

A7236IMS V7.0 120506 where:

1st digit refers to BIOS maker as A= AMI, W = AWARD, and P=PHOENIX.

2nd - 5th digit refers to the model number. 6th digit refers to the chipset as I= Intel, N= nVidia, and V= VIA. 7th - 8th digit refers to the customer as MS= all standard customers. V7.0 refers to the BIOS version. 120506 refers to the date this BIOS was released.

Getting HelpAfter entering the Setup menu, the first menu you will see is the Main Menu.

Main MenuThe main menu lists the setup functions you can make changes to. You can use thearrow keys (↑↓) to select the item. The on-line description of the highlighted setupfunction is displayed at the bottom of the screen.

Sub-MenuIf you find a right pointer symbol (as shown inthe right view) appears to the left of certainfields that means a sub-menu can be launchedfrom this field. A sub-menu contains additional options for a field parameter. You canuse arrow keys ( ↑↓ ) to highlight the field and press <Enter> to call up the sub-menu.Then you can use the control keys to enter values and move from field to field withina sub-menu. If you want to return to the main menu, just press the <Esc >.

General Help <F1>The BIOS setup program provides a General Help screen. You can call up this screenfrom any menu by simply pressing <F1>. The Help screen lists the appropriate keysto use and the possible selections for the highlighted item. Press <Esc> to exit theHelp screen.

The items in Standard CMOS Features Menu includes some basic setup items. Usethe arrow keys to highlight the item and then use the <+> or <-> keys to select thevalue you want in each item.

Date (MM:DD:YY)This allows you to set the system to the date that you want (usually the current date).The format is <day> <month> <date> <year>.

[day] Day of the week, from Sun to Sat, determined by BIOS. Read only.[month] The month from Jan. through Dec.[date] The date from 1 to 31 can be keyed by numeric function keys.[year] The year can be adjusted by users.

Advanced BIOS Features

Boot sector protectionThis function protects the BIOS from accidental corruption by unauthorized users orcomputer viruses. When enabled, the BIOS’ data cannot be changed when attempt-ing to update the BIOS with a Flash utility. To successfully update the BIOS, you’llneed to disable this Flash BIOS Protection function.You should enable this function at all times. The only time when you need to disableit is when you want to update the BIOS. After updating the BIOS, you should immedi-ately re-enable it to protect it against viruses.

Full Screen Logo DisplayThis item enables you to show the company logo on the bootup screen. Settings are:

[Enabled] Shows a still image (logo) on the full screen at boot.[Disabled] Shows the POST messages at boot.

Quick BootingSetting the item to [Enabled] allows the system to boot within 5 seconds since it willskip some check items. Available options: [Enabled], [Disabled].

Boot up Num-Lock LEDThis setting is to set the Num Lock status when the system is powered on. Setting to[On] will turn on the Num Lock key when the system is powered on. Setting to [Off]will allow users to use the arrow keys on the numeric keypad. Setting options: [On],[Off].

IOAPIC FunctionThis field is used to enable or disable the APIC (Advanced Programmable InterruptController). Due to compliance with PC2001 design guide, the system is able to run inAPIC mode. Enabling APIC mode will expand available IRQ resources for the system.Setting options: [Enabled], [Disabled].

MPS Table VersionThis field allows you to select which MPS (Multi-Processor Specification) version tobe used for the operating system. You need to select the MPS version supported byyour operating system. To find out which version to use, consult the vendor of youroperating system.

PEG Force X1This BIOS feature allows you to convert a PCI Express X16 slot into a PCIExpress X1 slot. When [Enabled], the PCI Express X16 slot will be forced to runin the PCI Express X1 mode. When [Disabled], the PCI Express X16 slot will beallowed to run in its normal PCI Express X16 mode.If you have a PCI Express X16 graphics card installed in your system, youshould disable this BIOS feature. ACPI FunctionThis item is to activate the ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power ManagementInterface) Function. If your operating system is ACPI-aware, such as Windows 98SE/2000/ME/XP, select [Enabled]. Settings: [Enabled] and [Disabled].

ACPI Standby StateThis item specif ies the power saving modes for ACPI function. If your operatingsystem supports ACPI, such as Windows 98SE, Windows ME and W indows 2000,you can choose to enter the Standby mode in S1 or S3 fashion through the setting ofthis field. Options are:

[S1] The S1 sleep mode is a low power state. In this state, nosystem context is lost (CPU or chipset) and hardware maintains all system context.

[S3] The S3 sleep mode is a lower power state where the information of system configuration and open applications/files issaved to main memory that remains powered while most otherhardware components turn off to save energy. The information stored in memory will be used to restore the systemwhen a “wake up” event occurs.

Power Button FunctionThis feature allows users to configure the Power Button function. Settings are:

[Power Off] The power button functions as a normal power-off button.[Suspend] When you press the power button, the computer enters the

Restore on AC Power LossThis setting specif ies whether your system will reboot after a power failure orinterrupt occurs. Available settings are:

Resume From S3 By PS/2 KeyboardThe item specifies how the system will be awakened from power saving modewhen input signal of the PS2 keyboard is detected. Use the <PageUp> &<PageDown> keys to select the options. When selecting [Password], enter thedesired password.

Resume From S3 By PS/2 MouseThis setting only works Resume From S3 By PS/2 Keyboboard is set to [HotKey]. This setting determines whether the system will be awakened from whatpower saving modes when input signal of the PS/2 mouse is detected.

This section describes configuring the PCI bus system and PnP (Plug & Play) feature.PCI, or Peripheral Component Interconnect, is a system which allows I/O devices tooperate at speeds nearing the speed the CPU itself uses when communicating withits special components. This section covers some very technical items and it isstrongly recommended that only experienced users should make any changes to thedefault settings.

PnP/PCI Configurations

Primary Graphic’s AdapterThis setting specifies which graphic card is your primary graphics adapter. Settingoptions are:

[PEG] The system initializes the installed PEG card first. If an PEG card isnot available, it will initialize the PCI VGA card.

[PCI] The system initializes the installed PCI VGA card first. If a PCI VGAcard is not available, it will initialize the PEG card.

PCI Latency TimerThis item controls how long each PCI device can hold the bus before another takesover. When set to higher values, every PCI device can conduct transactions for alonger time and thus improve the effective PCI bandwidth. For better PCI performance,you should set the item to higher values. Setting options: [32], [64], [96], [128], [160],[192], [224], [248].

PCI Slot 1~3 IRQThese items specify the IRQ line for each PCI slot. Setting options: [1], [2], [3] and[Auto]. Selecting [Auto] allows BIOS to automatically determine the IRQ line for eachPCI slot.

IRQ Resource SetupThe items are adjustable only when Resources Controlled By is set to Manual. Press<Enter> and you will enter the sub-menu of the items.IRQ Resources list IRQ 3/4/5/7/9/10/11/14/15 for users to set each IRQ a type depending on the type of device usingthe IRQ. Settings are:

Chassis IntrusionThe field enables or disables the feature of recording the chassis intrusion status andissuing a warning message if the chassis is once opened. CPU Smart Fan TargetThe mainboard provides the CPU Smart Fan system which can control the fan speedautomatically depending on the current temperature to keep it with in a specific range.

Current CPU/DRAM FrequencyThese two items show the current frequency of CPU & DRAM. (read only)

D.O.T ControlDynamic Overclocking Technology (D.O.T) is the automatic overclocking function,included in the MSITM’s newly developed CoreCellTM Technology. It is designed todetect the load balance of CPU while running programs, and to adjust the best CPUfrequency automatically. When the motherboard detects CPU is running programs, itwill speed up CPU automatically to make the program run smoothly and faster. Whenthe CPU is temporarily suspending or staying in the low load balance, it will restorethe default settings instead. Usually the Dynamic Overclocking Technology will bepowered only when users' PC need to run huge amount of data like 3D games or thevideo process, and the CPU frequency need to be boosted up to enhance the overallperformance.

The items here includes some important settings of CPU and PCI functions. Changethese settings only if you are familiar with the chipset.

Adjust CPU FSB FrequencyThis item allows you to select the CPU Front Side Bus clock frequency (in MHz) andoverclock the processor by adjusting the FSB clock to a higher frequency. Settingoptions: For CPU FSB200: [200]~[500]

Adjusted CPU FrequencyThis item shown the CPU frequency after you adjusted. You need to restart thesystem to load the new CPU frequency you choose. (read only)

Adjust DRAM FrequencyAdjusting the DRAM Frequency can increase the DDR speed.

Adjusted DDR Memory FrequencThis item shown the DDR memory frequency after you adjusted. You need to restartthe system to load the new memory frequency you choose. (read only)

Adjust AGP/PCI FrequencyThis item allows you to select the AGP/PCI frequency (in MHz). In default this valuewill change automatically in accordance with the setting of Adjust CPU FSB Frequency.However, you may adjust the desired fixed AGP/PCI frequency you like by using the<+> & <-> key. Setting option: [33.3].

Adjust PCIE FrequencyThis item allows you to select the PCI Express frequency (in MHz). Select the numberbetween [100]~[150] for needed frequency.

Auto Disable DIMM/PCI FrequencyThis item is used to auto detect the DIMM/PCI frequency. Settings: [Enabled], [Disabled].

CPU VoltageThis item is used to adjust the incremental percentage of CPU corevoltage (Vcore).The item has eight options, the Min Value is 0% and the Max Value is 18%. This settingoffers users a tool to overclock the system.

Memory VoltageAdjusting the DDR voltage can increase the DDR speed. Any changes made to thissetting may cause a stability issue, so changing the DDR voltage for long-termpurpose is NOT recommended.

NB voltageThis item is used to adjust the North Bridge Voltage. This setting offers users a tool tooverclock the system.

FSB VoltageThis item is used to adjust the incremental percentage of FSB voltage. The item haseight options, the Min Value is 0% and the Max Value is 20%. This setting offers usersa tool to overclock the system.

Spread SpectrumWhen the motherboard’s clock generator pulses, the extreme values (spikes) of thepulses creates EMI (Electromagnetic Interference). The Spread Spectrum functionreduces the EMI generated by modulating the pulses so that the spikes of the pulsesare reduced to flatter curves. If you do not have any EMI problem, leave the setting at[Disabled] for optimal system stability and performance. But if you are plagued by EMI,select the desired range for EMI reduction. Remember to disable Spread Spectrumfunction if you are overclocking, because even a slight jitter can introduce a tempo-rary boost in clock speed which may just cause your overclocked processor to lockup.

Important

Configure DRAM Timing by SPDSelects whether DRAM timing is controlled by the SPD (Serial Presence Detect)EEPROM on the DRAM module. Setting to [Enabled] enables DRAM timings andthefollowing related items to be determined by BIOS based on the configurations ontheSPD. Selecting [Disabled] allows users to configure the DRAM timings and thefollow-ing related items manually. Setting options: [Enabled], [Disabled].

Important

1. If you do not have any EMI problem, leave the setting at [Disabled] foroptimal system stability and performance. But if you are plagued byEMI, select the value of Spread Spectrum for EMI reduction.

2. The greater the Spread Spectrum value is, the greater the EMI is reduced,and the system will become less stable. For the most suitable SpreadSpectrum value, please consult your local EMI regulation.

3. Remember to disable Spread Spectrum if you are overclocking be-cause even a slight jitter can introduce a temporary boost in clockspeed which may just cause your overclocked processor to lock up.

Load Fail-Safe/Optimized DefaultsThe two options on the main menu allow users to restore all of the BIOS settings tothe default Fail-Safe or Optimized values. The Optimized Defaults are the defaultvalues set by the mainboard manufacturer specifically for optimal performance of themainboard. The Fail-Safe Defaults are the default values set by the BIOS vendor forstable system performance. When you select Load Fail-Safe Defaults, a message asbelow appears:

Pressing Y loads the BIOS default values for the most stable, minimal systemperformance. When you select Load Optimized Defaults, a message as below appears:

Pressing Y loads the default factory settings for optimal system performance.

BIOS Setting PasswordWhen you select this function, a message as below will appear on the screen:

Type the password, up to 6 characters in length, and press <Enter>. The passwordtyped now will replace any previously set password from CMOS memory. You will beprompted to confirm the password. Retype the password and press <Enter>. Youmay also press <Esc> to abort the selection and not enter a password.

To clear a set password, just press <Enter> when you are prompted to enter thepassword. A message will show up confirming the password will be disabled. Oncethe password is disabled, the system will boot and you can enter Setup withoutentering any password.

When a password has been set, you will be prompted to enter it every time you try toenter Setup. This prevents an unauthorized person from changing any part of yoursystem configuration.

MixerIn the Mixer part, you may adjust the volumes of the rear and front panels individually.1. Adjust VolumeYou can adjust the volume of the speakers that you pluged in front or rear panel byselect the Realtek HD Audio output.

2. Multi-Stream FunctionALC888 supports an outstanding feature called Multi-Stream, which means you mayplay different audio sources simultaneously and let them output respectively from theindicated real panel or front panel. This feature is very helpful when 2 people areusing the same computer together for different purposes.

Click the button and the Mixer ToolBox menu will appear. Then check the Enableplayback multi-streaming and click OK to save the setup.

Before set up, please make sure the playback devices are well pluggedin the jacks on the rear or front panel. The Realtek HD Audio output itemwill appear after you pluging the speakers into the jacks on the frontpanel.

W hen you are playing the f irst audio source (for example: use W indows MediaPlayer to play DVD/VCD), the output will be played from the rear panel, which is thedefault setting.

Then you must to select the Realtek HD Audio output from the scroll list first, anduse a different program to play the second audio source (for example: use Winampto play MP3 files). You will find that the second audio source (MP3 music) will comeout from the Line-Out audio jack of Front Panel.

Important

You have to plug audio device into the jacks on the rear and front panel firstbefore enable the multi-stream function.

MicrophoneIn this tab you may set the function of the microphone. Select the Noise Suppres-sion to remove the possible noise during recording, or select Acoustic EchoCancellation to cancel the acoustic echo druing recording.

Acoustic Echo Cancellation prevents playback sound from being recorded bymicrophone together with your sound.
