total number of units unregistered is around 8785 units. $s per estimation of
e%perts of the foundry sector" there are around 1855 unregistered foundry units
that are scattered across the country. This discrepancy in unregistered units is
mainly due to the fact that the 8785 units included all kinds of micro and small
units engaged in castings. <hereas the 1855 units data incorporates only those
foundry units that are engaged in grey iron casting and use conventional cupola
and e%cludes those units that are too micro in nature and use crucible for melting
of metals. $lso several foundry units had closed due to non compliance with the
pollution standard set by the government for e%ample ?owrah" $gra and nearby
areas. The foundry produces a wide variety of castings such as manhole covers"

The oldest casting in e%istence today is believed to be a frog" cast in copper. The

the melting metal and pouring its material in liquid form into a mould on a

The industry was clocking an annual growth of 11 percent in #ndia while the
global foundry output &is leveling off,. The #ndian foundry industry occupies a
special place in shaping the country,s economy. #ndia is currently among the 15
largest producers of ferrous and non:ferrous castings and has over D855

in the small scale. #ndia e%ports annually above =s. +55 crores worth of castings
to countries worth of castings to countries like GS$" G.-." anada" Fermany
etc.
This foundry has grown in volume over several decades of is poised to grown
further in future. One of the peculiar feature of this industry is that total
production is contributed by a number of medium and large scale in it,s from the
original sector and thousands of small scale units from the unorganized sector.
$n individual foundry e%isting now can produce right from 45tpm to 1555tpm
with a set of about =s .45 lakhs to =s 155 crores. One could just imagine the vast
difference in the size between the units of the same industry in terms of
investments and outputs. This draw a wide line between the units in all respects
through both belongs to the same industry. The product range of these
industries covers ordinary low grade casting to highly integrated higher grade "
castings with vast different in terms of technology methods " pricing etc."this
gives a good beverages to the buyer to producer casting as their convenient cost

The e%port of casting from #ndia amounted to one percent of the world

industry to forge strategic alliances with their counterparts on the developed
countries " which are on the verge of closure primarily due to three major
reasons .waste disposal and highly stringent pollution control regulation " high
labor cost and acute shortage of the trained personnel to work in foundries. This
is where #ndian foundries can make their presence felt in the international market
by approaching foreign foundries to source casting from #ndia at more
economical prices and thus enhance their market share. #n order to do these #ndia
foundries have to equip themselves with the latest technologies such as

adopt eco: friendly technologies.
The manufacture of metal products has seen a shift from the <est to the
countries like hina" -oria" (razil" and Taiwan" which have garnered major
share" and #ndia has to fight it out to grab its part. The increasing cost faced by
the automobile and other industries in the <est and the emergence of
competitive" skilled foundries in the developing countries have led to this shift.
The #ndian foundry sector would have the opportunity to address the needs of the
auto component industry with a staggering market size HD85 billion: H+55
billion.
#t is imperative that the #ndian foundry industry benchmarks itself against the
best in class practices" identifies the gaps" and initiates corrective measures to
emerge as one of the best in the foundry sector globally.
The #ndian economy is doing well with the increased demand from sectors like
