2016May 13–17
to May Day 2016
in Vaihingen an der Enz!
Dear friends of our city, dear fellow citizens,
»D’zit isch do...« so it sounds in the popular May Day poem that is annually presented by elementary students of Vaihingenat the Rondel celebration. And one wonders anew each year how quickly time flies by and the traditional May Day of Vaihingen isalready here.
I am very pleased that you have come once again to ourbeautiful Vaihingen this Pentecost weekend, and I want to welcome all of you to our city.
This year, the May Day is under the motto of a quote of the great French author Victor Hugo
»A dream is essential if you
want to build for the future«.
Here, the question arises whether this quote still has itsplace in today's society, where a somewhat hopelessness andresignation are unfortunately an increasing part of everyday life?
Victor Hugo clearly shows with his quote that every person iscalled on actively building his own future. To influence this futurein a positive way a dream is needed. This dream is for Hugo cer-tainly not in connection with a nightly entertainment, but as asynonym for an incentive, a motivation or a clear desire of whatone wants to achieve in the future and how one wants to activelyshape his life.
So I wish for all of us a positive dream for our future, fromwhich we can draw energy for an active life.
With the kindest regards, your
Gerd Maisch, Lord Mayor
Welcome

After a devastating major fire in 1693, which also destroyed
the city’s archives, the citizen tried to reestablish law andorder. Amongst others, they took note of »unknown kindhear-ted people« who donated 300 Gulden (old currency) for the»Mayenlauf« (May-running-event); »From the interest rate youshall give the schoolchildren paper, twines (»Nesteln«) and redribbons in the month of May«.
Furthermore, all citizens in earthly or sacred positions aswell as the constables (policing authorities), received wine
as a gift on this day.
The oldest record of the May Festival can be found in anaccount book of the hospital, where you can read in the entryof May 25th, 1687, that »the children ran for paper«. Most impressive is the phrasing in the journal of the city’scourt, where it was decided on the 15th of April 1706, thateach year, the city shall »lead the children into May« if not prohibited by war or large migration.
The May Festival is the oldest earthly festival of Vaihingen. If not already celebrated earlier, it goes back to the order ofduke Eberhard III. of 1650. Only two years after the Peace ofWestphalia (series of treaties), which ended the devastating
30 year war, he ordered to celebrate a »Gratitude and PeaceFestival« in the entire dukedom. May Festivals can be traced inthe city of Lindau (only 1650), Lauffen am Neckar (where it isnot celebrated anymore) and Göppingen, where it is still verylively.
The fact that the »Gratitude and Peace Festival« has beenpreserved as a »Children and Spring Festival« has to be owed
to the donators and volunteer workers.
In Vaihingen the Festival has become one for the entire city, because since after the second world war, many historicgroups, diverse clubs and the sister city were included into theparade and many other events developed around the coreFestival.

That particularly good wine
is made in Vaihingen, is wellknown. But who now actually has the
best? That is what the two winemakersHermann Wagner and Otto Bäuerle are fiercefully quarrelingabout since the days of our grandfathers. This is much tothe chagrin of their families and the urban community. Toobad, however, that Wagner's daughter and Bäuerle’s son havefallen in love. What nobody should know is put to the testwhen the windy wine merchant Winfried Grossmann appearsat Wagner. Wagner rejoices: at last he can outflank his long-time nemesis and competitor by using the sophisticatedGrossmann, but then, everything turns out very differently.Grossmann is slain before well of the market place and not

only Bäuerle and Wagner come under suspicion.Who really had his fingers in the pie of the sudden death of thedealer from Stuttgart? And then, Grossmann’s expensivePorsche has even been suspiciously smeared on, and HermannWagner’s best ladder has disappeared. To get some light into the Swabian small urban thicket of sus-picions and accusations, not only the hastily called famousCommissioner Ellwanger, who is actively supported by two bravepolicemen of Vaihingen, is trying, but also the equally clever ascurious Elfriede Lammer who just cannot stop getting involvedin solving crimes!

2. Psalmgebet 72(Prayer)
Gott, ich will dich loben.
Gott, ich will dich loben, denn du kannst Träume wahr machen.

8. Im schönsten Wiesengrunde(In the most beautiful meadow)
(Wilhelm Christian Ganzhorn, 1851)
9. Nun danket alle Gott(Let us all give thanks to God)
