Mr S. Ngcobo-PRO

I t is a pleasure to meet in this publi-cation, which is the

first issue of 2014.

This is the year that is per-ceived by many people as the year of the fulfilment of the dreams. It is imperative to start this year having targets of things to accomplish. Even though they may be obstacles and challenges on the way, just press on, the victory is certain.

The management would like to thank the staff for do-ing their best in rendering the best service to the cli-ents. This is shown through the increased number of compliments we are receiv-ing and positive media cov-erage of our hospital. This shows confidence our cli-ents have on us.

A former nurse has denied claims that Mahatma Gandhi state Hospital in Phoenix does not provide adequate patient care and the health standards are continuously dropping.

Anjalai Nair, 82, of Woodview, Phoenix and a retired nurse with city heath was full of praise and grati-tude for the hospital’s staff and the patient care she receive while she was at the hospital.

Nair who visited the hospital recently to remove her caterrax fell ill and subsequently had to be hospi-talized. Contradictory to many patients who slate the hospital’s patient care and service to the general public, Nair was full of praise and admira-tion for the quality of nursing care and state of the art equipment at the hospital.

Nair said, “ While I was at the hospital, I became ill and admitted. Contradictory to many who visit the hospital and claim the shoddy treatment they receive. I must confess that the treatment I received from doctors and nursing staff was excellent, patient was of high standard. Even the toilets were clean and the food was of high standard.

“I want to show my gratitude to all the staff and the Management of MGMH, by saying keep up the good work”, said Nair.

NEW FACE IN THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICE

M y name is Pinky Samukelisiwe Jele,

a 3rd year Public Relations Management student at Dur-ban University of Technology, PMB Campus.

I am currently doing my in-service training at MGMH and it is my great honour to be part of the MGMH Public Relations team.

I take this opportunity to thank the hospital management and

staff for welcoming me with warm hands.

I have gained a vast exposure and experience in this field under the mentorship of Mr. Sibonelo Ngcobo (PRO) and Mrs. R. Thomas (CLO). Being a self believer, confidence and ambitious, these traits will help me to make strides in this field.

Working at MGMH has proved the fact that Public Relations practice is a planned and sus-tained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics into reality.

I have gained a lot in terms of Media Liaison, Events Man-agement and on dealing with client’s queries and com-plaints.

I also gained knowledge about importance of establishing and maintaining a cemented rela-tionship with the clients which thus ensure the success of the institution.

The skills and expertise I’ve gain will help me in excelling in this field of my choice.

The event started on a high note whereby Mr. R. Ma-phumulo welcomed attendees and Mrs. Joan Pather outlined the purpose of the day.

The main aim of the workshop was to present hospital achievements and challenges based on the previous strat-

The hospital used this work-shop effectively to decide its future goals and to device a strategy to attain them espe-cially the implementation of the departmental six priorities.

The main focus of the work-shop was to identify challeng-es and to develop action plans to address them which will thus help the hospital to render optimal health care to the clients.

The team discussed the is-sues of Waste Management, Supply Chain, Record Keep-ing, Policies and Implementa-tion, housekeeping, HR Is-sues and Complaints.

Action Plans were developed to address the above aspects and the responsible Supervi-sors and Managers were giv-en time frames to complete allocated tasks.

Customer Care Training was also given to the Managers to empower them with customer care skills which will then filter the information to their super-visees.

This workshop was crucial as it will help our institution to al-locate and adjust its budget accordingly which will thus improve service delivery to the clients.

M GMH Anten-nal Clinic hosted a

Pregnancy Awareness Event on the 14 February 2014.

The aim of this event was to bring awareness to the mothers about the importance of attending the clinic during their early pregnancy and on

the importance of taking their treat-ment regularly.

Mothers were also educated on the signs of labour .Mothers were also warned about the danger signs of pregnancy which entail bleeding, decreased or increased foetal movements and blurred vision or double vision.

Gifts were also given to those moth-ers who participated in a question session and answered correctly

Mothers were very happy to be em-powered with such an information which will thus ensure the safety of their babies and their effective growth.

T he Pharmacy Department em-barked on a decongestion initi-

ative at Philakahle Clinic. The project started on the 27 January 2014.

Pharmacy was generally overcrowded with many patients collecting repeat medication. The department embarked on this initiative in order to stream-line the collection of repeat medicines. Pa-tients on standard treatment regimens

were identified and informed to collect their next lot of medication

at the clinic itself. The repeat prescrip-tion were pre-dispensed and the first batch of patients was seen on 24 Febru-ary 2014 at the clinic.

The main objectives of the project is to decrease patient waiting times, decon-gest the ARV Pharmacy and to increase patient satisfaction.

The pre cards are pre-dispensed in Pharmacy before the patient’ collection date. It is issued by a Pharmacist Assis-tant at the Philakahle clinic between 8

and 10am from Monday to Friday. On the average, about 150 pre-dispensed cards are issued daily.

The waiting time in the Pharmacy ARV section has also decreased due to these patients not presenting themselves at the pharmacy.

We have received a positive feedback from our clients as there is an improved satisfaction because the waiting time

has decreased.

The aim of this march was to bring awareness to the com-munity about the danger of substance abuse.

The statistics shows a drastic increase in the use substanc-es including cirgarate, alcohol, dagga, woonga etc. especially among the youth. This has resulted in the escalation of

various crime activities in

our communities whereby ad-dicts do whatever to fulfil their evil desires.

The march started at Ry-dalvale Grounds and ended at Phoenix SAPS where a mem-orandum was handed over to the Station Commander of Phoenix SAPS, Brigadier Ma-koba.

The memorandum called for police visibility in residential areas and for SAPS to attend the organisation’s regular meetings.

Chairperson of the organisa-tions Mohamed Shah outlined the aim of the march as to create a violence free society.

“We will be conducting a mo-

torcade in other areas as well over the next few months.

“Education is the key and we must work together in unity with the relevant authorities and members of the commu-nity to eradicate the scourge of substance abuse”, added Shah.
