MAHARSHI DAYANAND COLLEGELate Shri Mangaldas Verma, noted industrialist and philanthropist founded the college in 1962. Henamed the college after the great social reformer and founder of the Arya Samaj, Maharshi DayanandSaraswati. M.D. College is Punjabi linguistic minority college. LOCATION

The college is situated at Parel, Mumbai - 400 012, opposite Mahatma Gandhi Hospital and VeterinaryCollege.

BUS STOPS AND RAILWAY STATIONS

College is about ten minutes walking distance from “Elphinstone Road and Lower Parel” stations on theWestern railway and “Parel and Currey Road” stations on the Central railway. Bus route nos.9,57,61,64,65,67,69,166,200 & 134 ply along Dr. S.S.Rao Road and Bus route nos. 1, 5, 43, 66, 4 Ltd,8 Ltd, 22 Ltd, 25 Ltd, 30 Ltd, etc. ply along Dr. Ambedkar Road, which is only a few minutes walk fromthe college.

ADMISSION :

1. The college has “Linguistic minority status (Punjabi Linguistic)” applicable to studentsbelonging to this minority status. Admission will be given on priority to the students of minoritystatus with valid proof.

2. Student who have passed the secondary school certificate of the Maharashtra State Board orequivalent boards are eligible for admission to the FYJC. Admission to the FYJC will be throughthe process as per government directives on the basis of availability of seats.

3. Students from other states or other boards (CBSC, IB, IGSCE, ICSE) those who have passedexaminations other than that of the Maharashtra state board will have to fill the prescribed provisionaleligibility form to obtain eligibility certificate from the HSC Board. The eligibility form must besubmitted along with the college admission form. Other documents needed are, mark sheet, schoolleaving certificate and passing certificate (original and attested copies).

4. Statement of marks and certificate to be produced at the time of admission should be self attested

5. Female students must attach copies of their ration card along with the admission form forconcession in fees.

6. Student belonging to the economically backward class must submit the “INCOME CERTIFICATE”duly signed by the competent authority along with the admission form.

7. A student belonging to any reserved category (SC, ST, OBC, VJ/NT, etc.), the scheduled caste.Scheduled tribe, backward class and other backward classes must produce the original CASTECERTIFICATE and submit the attested copies along with the admission form.

8. Admission to the SYJC classes will be first given to the students of this college. They must seekadmission within ONE WEEK from the DATE OF DECLARATION OF FYJC RESULTS.

9. Admission to SYJC classes will be granted to students who do not belong to this college basedon Merit (subject to availability of seats). A student must produce FYJC mark sheet, leavingcertificate, along with the admission form a NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE from the head of theinstitution / principal of the college last attended must be produced.

Environment Education is a compulsory subject for FYJC and SYJC class. The total weightage ofEnvironment education subject is 50 marks. Which is the average of 1st and 2nd term marks.

Students are required to complete the project carrying 40 marks in the subject of Environment educationand passing the theory (minimum 21 marks) and project (minimum 14 marks) is compulsory. If studentsfail in the subject of Environment Education or HPE they will be declared failed.

2) A student must retain the first and second unit tests assessed answer books.

3) SYJC : i) Attendance of SYJC students in terminal and preliminary examination iscompulsory.

ii) Absence or poor performance of students in either of the examination andinadequate attendance (less than 75%) will give the principal the right towithhold their HSC examination forms. Submission of EE and HPEassignments and project is compulsory.

MINIMUM COMPETENCY VOCATIONAL COURSES (MCVC)

The MCVC was instituted by the Govt. of India in the new education policy. This is being implementedby the Govt. of Maharashtra through the Board of Vocational education and training. The courses aredesigned to enable students to learn useful and meaningful skills in specialised subjects at the +2 level,after which they can take up employment in their respective field.

A certificate of Maharashtra State Board of secondary and higher secondary education will be issued afterpassing the HSC exam. Successful candidates can avail of many opportunities for wage employment aswell as self employment. They can also take the apprenticeships of Govt. of India.

1. Accountancy & Auditing :

Students can independently work as accountant & tax consultant. On completion of this course, a studentcan work under a C.A. as on audit assistant or in any other private company as accounts clerk. Studentsfind it easier to complete C.A., I.C.W.A., B.M.S., B.F.A., C.S. Hotel Management, Bachelor in InteriorDesigning and all other management courses.

Those who wish to join senior college can take admission in FYBCom (subject to the approval of universityof Mumbai) after completing this course.

2. Electronics Technology :

This is specially a job-oriented course. After completing this course, students can opt for employment atSEEPZ or can avail Govt. loan facilities for starting their own business. Those desirous of doing Diplomacan join the following institutions.

a) Yeshwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University for Diploma in applied electronics.

b) Bhagubhai Polytechnic for part time Diploma in Electronics.

c) Two years Diploma in Diamond Technology.

The students are placed at various companies under BOAT program. The students can be directly admittedto second year diploma engineering for further technical expertise.

3. Inland Fisheries :

After completing this course, students can take up employment at fish, prawn farms, processingcompanies, ornamental fish industry, fisheries consultancy, etc. They can even go for employment asan entrepreneur in Prawn, farming or ornamental fish culture/breeding and trading. Govt. loan facilityis available for such ventures. Those who wish to join senior college, can take admission in FYBA &FYBSc (subject to the approval of Mumbai University)

4. Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) :

After completing this course, students can get employment as laboratory assistants in any Municipalhospital or Govt. hospital or Primary health centres. They can also get employment as laboratorytechnician in district hospitals or rural health centres.

MCVC OFFICE :

It is situated on the ground floor, students may contact the concerned clerk for routine office work.

APPRENTICESHIPS :

Govt. of India apprenticeships are available upon successful completion of all these MCVC courses.Successful candidates are registered with the Board of Apprenticeship Training (BOAT) for a period ofone year. The minimum stipend payable during the period of training is Rs.1,900/-, per month. (Thereis no upper limit) 50% of the minimum stipend is paid by the Govt. of India.

Environment education and Health and physical education are compulsory subjects for all MCVCcourses.

Those students desirous to join senior college can take admission in FYBA and FYBSc (subject to theapproval of Mumbai University)

They can also work as distributor of various laboratory reagent chemicals, culture media, etc. They canget a job of Phlebotomist in various reputed laboratories & hospitals.

REFUND OF FEES :

1. If a student informs the institution before the commencement of the academic year that he/shewants to withdraw his/her admission and that he/she cannot continue his/her education in thesame institution for any valid reason, then tuition fees, laboratory fees (if any) and library andlaboratory deposits if any, will be refunded in full however the admission fee shall be retained bythe institution.

2. If a student desires to withdraw his/her admission after the commencement of the academicyear the institution shall retain the admission fee, term fee & laboratory fees (if any) in full andalso the proportionate amount of the tuition fees till the end of the month in which the refund isclaimed. The remaining amount of tuition fee if any, shall be refunded along with library andlaboratory deposits.

COLLEGE OFFICE:

The college office is situated on the ground floor. Fees and other payments are received by the office atnotified time. For scholarships, freeship, railway concession, etc. office should be contacted.

BEST, S.T. AND RAILWAY CONCESSIONS:

Bonafide students of the college (Male students) below 25 years of age and all female students can availthe facility for railway concession for their season tickets between the station nearest to their homes(Home address as mentioned in the admission form only) and the station nearest to the college (Parel/Curry Road/Elphinstone/Lower Parel/Sewree).

Long journey railway concession will be granted only in vacations according to rules published by therailway, details about which are available in the college office.

Application for ST bus concession is available (ST office), if permanent address is mentioned in thecollege admission form.

COLLEGE REGULATIONS

1. Students joining the college must note that they are under the governance of the Principal in allmatters.

2. Each student is expected to behave in an orderly and disciplined manner inside and outside theinstitution. Disciplinary action will be taken for any reported misbehavior.

3. On admission, student will be issued identity cards. No student will be allowed for Lectures,Practicals, College Office, Laboratories, Canteen, etc. without the identity card, which should beproduced on demand made by any competent authority. Failure to observe this rule will lead tocancellation of admission.

4. Minimum 75% attendance per term in lectures, tutorials and practicals is COMPULSORY.

5. All college examinations are COMPULSORY.

6. Prior permission of the Principal must be obtained to form a society, make collections, sell tickets,arrange meetings, invite guests, organize excursion and picnics etc. All notices put up on thenotice board must have prior permission of the Principal.

7. Any matter published in the magazine must have prior permission of the Principal.

8. Student must refrain from any political activity within the college campus.

9. Students should not communicate any information to the press without the permission of thePrincipal.

10. Students are strictly prohibited from loitering in the corridors while lectures, practicals and tutorialsare in progress. In case the Students are free from their respective lectures/practicals they shouldkeep themselves engaged in the Students Common Room or Library or Gymkhana.

11. Absence from college should be intimated to the teacher incharge on time. Medical leaveapplication should be attached with a medical certificate and medical fitness certificate when astudent resumes classes.

SMOKING, USE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS, DRUGS & USE OF MOBILE STRICTLYPROHIBITED IN THE COLLEGE CAMPUS

A student may be expelled by the Principal for the following reasons (Principles laid down by MaharashtraState Government Education Department)

A) Persistent insubordination.

B) Misbehavior.

C) Malpractice in the examination.

D) Unauthorized alteration of the Leaving Certificate.

E) Undesirable influence over fellow student.

F) Involved in the immoral acts such as theft, indecent behaviour towards fellow students, etc.

RULES OF DISCIPLINE

The following rules of discipline need to be observed.

(1) Regularity in attendance and implicit obedience.

(2) Politeness and courtesy of speech, in conduct as well as cleanliness of dress and person.

(3) Ragging in any form is a serious offence punishable by law under the Maharashtra Anti-Ragging Act.Students who tease, bully, fight or otherwise behave in a manner that causes another student harmwill be punished.

COLLEGE LIBRARY

The library is in a separate building in the quadrangle at the rear of the college. Our Library supports andcaters to the academic needs of our students. The College endeavours to make the library user friendly.We extend our library services to retired teachers & ex-students with minimal fees. It is equipped with36,000 Books & 85 Periodicals in various disciplines. The large spacious reading room with an openaccess system will encourage students to browse through a large variety of books. • A suggestion box is placed in the library. This healthy practice enables the library to meet student’srequirements.

• The library and reading room is open on all the working days from 8.00 a.m to 7.30 p.m.

• Books are issued to students for a period of 7 days.

• Failure to return a book on the scheduled date will incur a fine of Rs.1.00 per day beyond the duedate.

• Online journals are also available in the library.

• Photocopy service is also provided to the students at the rate of Rs. 1/- per Copy.

• Readers can search the library books on the computer with the help of the library staff.

• Library is stocked with CD ROMs on various subjects.

• Internet facility is available in the library. Colour & B/W printouts will be available on payment ofcharge.

• Online entry is a must for internet usage.

• Reference books will not be issued in any case.

• Bags or personal books will not be permitted in the reading room. Student must Keep theirbelongings in the luggage rack.

• Journals and personal books are not allowed inside the library.

• Visit the library website regularly for latest updates.

• Silence must be maintained. Students found chatting in the reading room will face disciplinaryaction.

• Library is under CCTV surveillance.

• If any book is damaged or lost by the borrower he/she will either replace it or pay the cost of thebook at the prevailing market price.

• The librarian is authorised to terminate the membership of any borrower if he/she is found guiltyof misbehavior.

• Use of mobile is strictly prohibited in the library.

• Library card is necessary in the library premises.

• All the library books are required to be returned as per specified date.

• Internet access is available in the library only for academic purpose.

• Students are prohibited from exchanging library cards.

• Loss of library card should be reported to the librarian immediately.

• Library OPAC (Catalogue) is available on internet on all the computers in the college. Students cancheck the list of library books / CD’s / journals anytime between 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. in collegepremises.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Maharshi Dayanand College is committed to both academic excellence and welfare of students.We have a large range of co-curricular activities which help the students to develop all round personality.A student can discover his/her own special talents and interests by taking part in events like elocution,debates, rangoli, mehendi, drawing, sports, dramatics, quiz-competition, science olympiad, writingarticles, organising exhibitions, cultural programmes. All these activities including NSS and NCC willbroaden the outlook of the student and help in understanding the world outside the class room.

A student can participate in the activities of any association. The list of associations are as follows.Arts Circle, Commerce Circle, Science Association, Cultural Association, Sports and Gymkhana, NCC,NSS, Literature Circle.

GYMKHANA

The college spends a considerable amount for sports infrastructure to promote both the outdoor and indoorsports activities among the students. The Gymkhana activities are managed by Sports Director. Allstudents are expected to take part in Gymkhana activities for their allround development. The Gymkhana/ sports committee organises state level Kabaddi and Kho-Kho competitions and various other sportsevents. The college has fully equipped Gymnasium. Coaching facility is available for cricket, football,kabaddi, kho-kho, volleyball, yoga, taekwondo, mallakhamb, etc.

GOVERNMENT OF INDIA POST SSC SCHOLARSHIPS TO BACKWARD CLASS STUDENTS

The scheme of grant of the Govt. of India Scholarships to Backward Class Students (SCs / STs / NTs /LIGs and STs outside the specified area in Vidarbha). For post SSC courses is implemented by theDivisional Social welfare Office, Mumbai division, Mumbai. All backward class students taking approvedpost-SSC courses are eligible for the Government of India Scholarships. To secure these facilitiesbackward class students must secure their forms from the college Office and submit them duly filled within30 days after the reopening of the college. The conditions for eligibility are as follows:-

I) Father annual income.

II) Caste certificates duly attested must be submitted.

III) Students should not be repeaters.

IV) The Students must not be third child of the same parent/Guardian receiving post SSC education.
