.................................................................

Dear Families and Friends,

Throughout this very exciting year, the overarching and driving force for our school community has been to uncover, understand, plan and make informed assessments that will support our children make connections with, and construct meaning about, what it really means to be an active learner living in the 21 Century.

During the many opportunities we have to observe our “Learners Constructing Meaning”,whether this be during explorations in the playground, homerooms, gym or snack sala, it is strongly evident that our children truly see themselves as respected learners, capable of taking ownership of their learning and can show this daily through actions and decision making. This is a sheer joy to watch and a real testament to the heart of humanity and the essence of what it means to experience anIB education.

We support the children in their quest for construction meaning “by drawing on their prior knowledge, by providing provocation through new experiences and by providing time and opportunity for reflection and consolidation.”(IBO,Making the PYP Happen,2009). This takes place through an inquiry process of asking questions, investigating, creating, discussing and reflecting. Children learn through play. The connection between play and constructing meaning is a key element in the children’s understanding and development.

The implementation of the PYP curriculum, how it is interpreted and what it looks like across all classes “emphasizes the active construction of meaning so that student’s learning will be purposeful” (IBO, Making the PYP Happen, 2009). In turn, this reflects the individual person they are,and have the right to be. At Magic Years, we believe that this is possible when we understand each child and value them for the unique contribution they bring to further enrich our community.

To truly encourage students to take responsibility for their learning we, as educators, need to know each of our unique learners. We need to plan programs so they have access to tools, strategies and teaching and learning styles that will best support their conceptual understandings. The need to value the individual learner, as well as reflect their unique life experiences, interests, families, cultures, languages, temperaments, along with highlighting the relevant learning styles, modalities, orientations and mindsets are embedded in our practice and balanced across all areas of learning, both inside and outside the classroom.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Parent Working Group for their continuous hard work and support towards our community and the belief they have in our school vision. We would also like to thank our families, parents, teachers, staff and our children, for another excitingyear reflective of, new experiences, challenges, successes, goals and an understanding of what it means to be an internationally-minded person in the 21st Century. Our best wishes are with you all.

Sincerely,

The Pedagogical Leadership Team

“The child starting kindergarten this fall will graduate in the third decade of the 21st century. All we can know about the world she will step into is that it will have challenges and opportunities beyond what we can imagine today, problems and possibilities that will demand creativity and ingenuity, responsibility and compassion. Whether this year’s kindergarten student will merely survive or positively thrive in the decades to come depends in large measure on the experiences she has in school. Those experiences will be shaped by adults, by peers, and ultimately by the places, by the physical environments where she does her learning. United in the conviction that environment is our children’s third teacher, we can begin a new a vital mission: designing today’s schools for tomorrow’s world.”

Varis Muangman I love to go to school. I love to play in the playground with my friends.I like to learn about things around me.

He has high self-condence like a leader. He is creative, assertive, kind and loves all of his friends but he still has a lack of discipline.

“We value space because of its power to organise, promote pleasant relationships among young people of dierent ages, create a handsome environment, provide changes, promote choices and activity, and its potential for sparking all kinds of social, aective, and cognitive learning. All of this contributes to a sense of wellbeing and security in children. We also think that the space has to be a sort of aquarium that mirrors the ideas, values, aitudes and cultures of the people who come to live within it. “

“Children and adults together become collaborators as they discover, collect, sort, arrange, experiment, create, construct, and think with materials. The goal is to allow children to become uent with materials – as if materials were a language.”

Reflecting on our learning journey the we talked about what we learned in Grade 1, and recalled how we first established the roots of community in our first unit of inquiry – Living Collaboratively. Then we shared thoughts on how we have grown as learners since establishing these roots. Based on our discussion, each child developed an important piece of advice to return Magic Years studentsand to prospective students who will begin a new journey at the school next year. “Pay attention when your friend is talking!” “Remember to clean up!” – Taiyara “Cooperate with each other! For example, in a fire line. A fire line is when there is a fire, and when we go get water alone, we will be tired. Instead we can line up together and pass the water to the person that pours water to the fire.” - Nene “We help clean up together.” – Notch “Be nice to our friends!” – Catherine “Make your friends happy by helping them!” – Bay “Listen when your friend is talking to you!” – Justin “Sit ‘criss cross apple sauce’ or with your knees tucked in when it is circle time!” – Mola “Be polite!” – Sebastian “Be open-minded if somebody challenge you by asked you to do a hard thing!” - Ms. Jacky “Abide by the Three secretes to Grade 1 (and in life): 1. Make a good choice!; 2. Stay involved!; 3. Remember to clean up!” - Mr. Allen
