The thread of stories…

A few productive years spent in the business of storytelling gives substance and gravity to such truisms. Here I single out seven elements that have shaped my understanding of content management:

Researching in four languages has yielded the credo that if you struggle to find something on the web, you just have to search a little more. Hardly anything passes under Google’s radar.

Writing and editing stories in English and Hungarian has borne critical writing experience. My job is to craft subtly-worded texts with clean structure on business, politics, culture and travel.

Sourcing pieces to lifestyle-, business-, and custom publications has taught me to write across different genres: magazine features, Q&As, portraits, short news, ‘decision tree’ travel guides, infographics, and integrated promotion.

Interviewing famous intellectuals from around the globe reassured me that the world is trading old boundaries for a new global discourse.

Writing and editing content for online microsites, newsletters and a CMS press monitor has shown me the “augmented reality” various online platforms offer to publishers.

Managing magazines from concept to press has made me adamant on keeping deadlines, watching the budget, and staying accountable.

Account management has taught me that if you have a client who is unable to decide, then you haven’t delivered enough solutions.

With this portfolio I aim to showcase my experiences and I would also like to invite you to read – after all, the mission of an editor is to get people reading.

...is endless. And so are the ways to weave it.

HINT

The client: ITD Hungary(IDTH), the former state agency for investment and trade development.

The objective: To develop and produce a quarterly magazine that informs investors and governments about the potential business op-portunities in Hungary, while giving a taste of Hungarian culture and heritage.

The product: 12 issues were published in a total circulation of 10,000 copies/issue. HINT was written and edited in English, and distributed by ITD Hungary in 180 countries, in two languages (English, German).

My responsiblity: I wrote feature articles about economy and finance; I produced interviews with scholars and high-ranking officials; I also wrote short news and pieces on culture (books).

The challenge: To find the delicate balance between the sober criti-cism of economic policy and the messages promoting the Hungarian economy; to make a small country interesting and attractive to foreign-ers; to make it more than a brochure via relevant questions and mean-ingful conclusions.

The objective: To provide meaningful content to an intelligent and demanding readership, drawing on the finest traditions of big foreign magazines like Vanity Fair, Intelligent Life, and Wallpaper.

The product: A 160-page glossy lifestyle magzine with both interna-tional and national scope. 25,000 copies of the magazine are distrib-uted in Hungary. Highbrow and streetsmart in the same time, Hamu és Gyémánt features interviews with famous intellectuals, as well as stories of culture, people, and places. Quality photos and graphics frame every story and make the magazine a real page-turner.

My responsiblity: I have been researching, organizing, and editing international interviews that we have published in the section called Headline. My task has been to get famous interviewees on the line and to organize personal interviews. I contribute with interviews myself. I have researched and written most pieces that have appeared in the magazine’s portrait section (Reflektor) over the last year. I also partici-pate in drawing up the overall editorial concept of each new issue.

The challenge: Hungary is a small market which lacks high-quality lifestyle publications. Over the past 13 years, Hamu és Gyémánt has gained a reputation not only as a product, but also as an endeavour to make the costly genre of the high-end lifestyle publication profitable even on a smaller market. To make this happen, we aim for a provoca-tive and witty apporach while keeping readers in current on culture and high-end products.

Budapest Business Journal

The client: Budapest Business Journal (and Lufthansa)

The objective: to produce a series of articles for different types of travellers on various Lufthansa destinations: Berlin, Washington, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, and more.

The product: 8 articles on German and US destinations. For the articles on US destinations I also produced online galleries and info-graphics using WORDPRESS editor.

The client: Audi Hungaria Motor Kft.

The objective: To create an engaging and compact brochure that initi-ates thousands of prospective new workers (Hungarians and Germans) into the corporate culture of Audi Hungaria Motor.

The product: a 44+4 page brochure sized smaller-A5. Kulturkompass was produced and published in German and in Hungarian simultane-ously. It sums up the most important corporate codes of behaviour, the dress code, as well as the key corporate values of Audi Hungaria.

My responsiblity: I worked as the in-house editor and project manag-er during the project Kulturkompass. Together with designers, we cre-ated a layout. We wrote and refined the content in close cooperation with the communications department of the client. I coordinated the work of the photo-editor and two graphic designers, and represented our comapny on meetings with the client.

The challenge: Audi Hungaria is a demanding customer. They have well-founded initial ideas but always look for substantial added value, i.e. several versions of layout and content. They also have a strict mechanism of approval, therefore it was crucial that we always meet our deadlines.

MOL Sum Up

The client: MOL Group

The objective: To manage the production of the annual B2B magazine of MOL Group, the largest company in Hungary, and one of the biggest energy corporations in the CEE region.

The product: an English-Hungarian B2B magazine with interviews and feature articles. Sum Up was produced in Hungarian and was trans-lated to English as well. The layout allowed the publication of both the Hungarian and English versions in one magazine.

My responsibility: I worked as an in-house editor and project manag-er on Sum Up. I coordinated the writers, the photo editor, the designer, the proofreader, and the client.

The challenge: Sum Up is a prestigious annual B2B publication of MOL Group. It features interviews with top-ranking company officials, as well as articles on strategic issues. Therefore, the production of the magazine involved meticulous translation and proofing, a high degree of precision in terms of facts and graphs, as well as considerable deadline pressure.

The client: Royal Dutch Shell

The objective: To develop launch a new CEE lifestyle magazine under the auspices of Royal Dutch Shell. We had to produce 32 pages of editorial content (local and regional) and publish in five countries: in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia.

The product: a 68-page lifestlye magazine with an average 38 pages of editorial content. GoSmart has been produced in five languages: Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish and Slovakian – with a new Rus-sian mutation added later, the magazine is now marketed in six coun-tires with a total circulation of 600,000. Most of the articles are com-missioned to local writers in each country, while some of the pieces of regional scope are translated to the respective languages. The maga-zine targets families and middle-aged individuals.

My responsiblity: I was sub-editor and coordiantor in this project from the publication of the first issue until late 2011. On very tight dead-lines (in less than a month) I had to find journalists in all five countries, contract them, brief them, and manage the production, translation, and proofreading of dozens of foreign articles. I also sought to contribute ideas and solutions to the editorial planning. I was involved in the pro-duction of the first three issues.

The challenge: I had to coordinate dozens of writers and proofread-ers based in foreign countries, while most of the editorial decisions were anchored at our company in Budapest. It was a new-launch, with which we had to live up to Shell corporate values as well.

Recommendations

"I have worked with Adam for more than 2 years, having hired him to work as an editor on a publication with a circulation of just over 500,000 printed copies.

Adam is one of the most organized and trustworthy people I have had the pleasure to work with. He is dedicated to providing and organizing good copy, and also displays a client-centric approach. Always ready with good ideas and a flexible approach to problem-solving, Adam approached complex projects with energy. I would thoroughly recommend him to any media company looking to extend a quality editorial team."

Duncan Welch, editor in Chief , GoSmart

Ádám Farkas is a reliable member of the freelancer team of the Budapest Business Journal. He delivers his articles right on time; his pieces are thor-ough and professionally written. He follows editorial instructions but is also able to draw conclusions or build up the structure of an article on his own. Due to his language skills, his articles give very little work for our proofreader and copy editor.
