e remarkable growth at SAU over the past year, it's rprising that when prospective students tour the s for the very first time, they say they "feel at home."
: - :a eeling of home - that sense of security, community longing - that first instills in them to desire to learn
eans to Be A Mulerider.
Be A Mulerider means more than just enrolling and g on a major. It means committing to some of the
at make SAU great: service, tradition , pride, ..is· n, family, fun , and academic success.
SAU is the launch pad for many remarkable careers, and in the words of Dr. Trey Berry, president, it's "the people" who make the Mulerider experience so worthwhile.
Ask any Mulerider alum and they will tell you that the Blue and Gold courses through your veins for a lifetime. That feeling you have when you first tour SAU is the same feeling when you cross the graduation stage and when you return to campus in the years that follow. Please enjoy a look back at the 2016-17 academic year and how the SAU family continues to instill Mulerider traditions and values.

Southern Arkansas University Mulerider mascot Payton Baird took her final ride as the Mulerider on December 3 at the Live United Bowl in Texarkana.
"There is no better place to have my final game as the Mulerider than in Texarkana," said Baird. "I have had such a wonderful support group throughout my reign, and with my home town of Fouke being just south of Texarkana, this means that even more of those I love will get to come out and cheer on the Muleriders!"
Baird grew up raising and riding gated mules with her grandfather. Although she has appreciated how being the Mulerider has given her the opportunity to form relationships with many admirable people, she said what she will miss most is Molly Ann.
er
"I have raised mules my whole life and have been around them enough to know that each one has their own personality, but Molly Ann is a breed of her own. She has become a companion to me and to my family, and she will be greatly missed at our home."
As one of the most unique mascots in collegiate athletics, the Mulerider position requires more than just appearing at football games. Baird has been featured in SAU marketing initiatives and has made appearances in parades and other events across the region.
"Payton has had quite a ride as the SAU Mulerider," said SAU President Dr. Trey Berry. "She has represented SAU with energy, grace and integrity."
Megan McCurdy, the previous Mulerider, passing the reins to Baird.
Baird graduated in May of 2016 with her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
As with Muleriders before her, Payton Baird was available to pose for several photo shoots for SAU promotional pictures. 7

Southern Arkansas University is built on many great traditions that are evident throughout our campus, in our classrooms, and in the lives and interactions of our students. But how does one get to Be A Mulerider1
It might mean finding success as one of our talented and dedicated Mulerider student athletes, representing SAU on the national stage.
It might mean spending a summer at an internship, or studying abroad to prepare for greater academic and professional experiences.
Or, it might mean volunteering in our local community, lending a hand where needed.
We have so many avenues in which our students can express themselves, develop their talents, contribute their skills, broaden their horizons, and, of course, experience all of the traditions to find out what it truly means to Be A Mulerider. It's all part of the
Mulerider experie~

Abbie Guin was selected to take over the reins as the SAU Mulerider. She is an Animal Science major from Minden, Louisiana.
Guin's friends encouraged her to apply for the Mulerider position when it opened in February. "They all thought it would be a really good fit. Rusty sent out the email to apply, and it took me two hours to fill out my application. I did, and the next week he called to say I could interview with a committee. I told them I would be honored to help recruit for SAU. I rode Molly Ann with a flag and the rest is history."
Freshman Drew List
Kinsey Watkins Kinsey Watkins came to SAU as state FFA president. She was elected to her position on June 3, 2016, during the 89th Arkansas FFA State Convention at Camp Couchdale in Hot Springs.
A lifetime in agriculture led her to pursue her academic and career goals. She is double majoring in Agricultural Business and Animal Science and intends to make the field her life's work.
Drew List, Agriculture: Plant Science major from Vilonia, didn't grow up on a farm, yet he has nonetheless succeeded in FFA, ascending to one of its top statewide elected positions as Northwest Arkansas Vice President before entering SAU as a freshman.
Mary Alice Cole was elected state 4-H president at State-0-Rama in Fayetteville in August 2016. She also represented Arkansas at the Southern Regional TLC in Tennessee.
She joined 4-H when she was 12 years old and has progressed from showing livestock to photography. "I grew up in a very small town. My grandfather has a small cattle farm and I grew up riding. My mom showed hogs and I went to the county fair and rodeos. The rodeo amazed me. I participated in sports but Mom told me I would have to choose either sports or 4-H. I chose 4-H."

Jada Fricks, of Saratoga, Arkansas, and Ashdown High School , came to SAU as a Hallman Scholarship recipient. For her efforts in her freshman year, she earned one of three chemistry awards. As a member of the SAU Cross Country team, she was one of 13 SAU student athletes to be named to the GAG Fall All-Academic Team.

Taijee Bunch , a popular theatre student and resident director from Lonoke, Arkansas, was cast as Scuttle in the musical theatre program's production of Disney's "The Little Mermaid."
He says, "Playing Scuttle was an experience in its own. I had to learn how a bird moves and views the world and translate that into my body. That being, how my body moved, how my voice sounded, every little mannerism. It was so fun and the kids and adults loved it! That's what makes it so special. "
Junior Daniel Pletcher, former Freshman of the Year award recipient from Texarkana, Texas, earned the Spirit of the Residence Hall Association Award.
"My first year as an RA was an experience I will never forget," he said. "Being an RA, I have gained so many memories and learned many life lessons that I will use throughout my future. I was not expecting to get this award, but when I did it helped me realize the positive impact I have had in my residents' lives."
Alycya Thomas, a theatre major from Jonesboro, was hired as a production assistant for "The Lion King: The Musical on Broadway." Her job was stage manager production assistant, "which means that I'm the stage manager's right hand.
On "The Lion King ," there are four stage managers I will observe, learn to 'call' the show which means I will actually run the show for one night, learn how to do day-to-day paperwork, work with the actors during rehearsal and show time and in any other needed areas." This opportunity followed Alycya joining three of her theatre classmates on an SAU trip to New York City.

Mia Hyman, a senior marketing major from Little Rock and SAU's 2015 "100 Years of Homecoming" Queen , said she has enjoyed being an inspiration to other students and feels "bittersweet" about graduating in May.
"Nothing gets accomplished in your comfort zone," Hyman said. "You have to go out and take action first. All it takes is 10 seconds of courage - take 10 seconds to step outside your comfort zone, and things get done."
Maddie Dow, a senior athletic training major from Bonham, Texas, has an impressive lis of both athletic and academic awards from her time at SAU.
Dow was named SAU College of Education's Outstanding Undergraduate Student and GAC Female Athlete of the Year. She was also nominated for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Graduate Studies
Kristen Pickett, an online MBA student at SAU , said she is inspired to help entrepreneurs create the most important piece of their business - a plan.
Pickett, a native of Horatio, Arkansas, received her undergraduate degree in Entrepreneurial Finance in May 2016 and is now pursuing her MBA with an emphasis in Social Entrepreneurship.

BAM (Becoming A Mulerider) is SAU's custom and unique single-day freshman orientation. Incoming Muleriders may schedule the BAM day of their choice throughout the summer. Each day features a welcome presentation, opportunities to engage with SAU's four colleges and various departments and organizations, and each student leaves with his or her fall class schedule. The BAM program is designed to offer students a smooth transition to SAU.
