Stepping up to the

challenge >One third of Bangladesh is covered by water, and these waterways have prevented the majority of the poor and vulnerable from access to aid and development. However, MAF’s amphibious (land or water) aircraft has turned this problem into a solution, enabling many aid agencies to now reach difficult areas.

Currently the programme is struggling to keep up with demand with only one aircraft, having to turn away critical bookings and medevacs. Having two aircraft will provide:

The impact of the flight programme has been validated by a number of assessments including a British Government external evaluation.

Tripled booking capacity there will be greater flexibility and effectiveness as the flight service can be sustained while one aircraft is being maintained.

Enhanced medevacs service a proper response to urgent Medevac requests while scheduled flights are covered by the other aircraft.

Greater financial sense two aircraft deliver greater efficiency as they utilize the same base and management/technical support facilities.

Better planning for aid agencies with a greater level of confidence that MAF has the means to get them to hard-to-reach areas.

Why is it important to tackle poverty in

hard-to-reachareas?

There are plenty of poor people more easily accessible – especially those living in cities. However the significance of getting assistance and development to hard-to-reach areas to properly tackle poverty cannot be understated.Experience has shown that it is difficult, if not impossible, to achieve true sustainable economic and social development when pockets of poverty remain, rather than all areas being reached with equity.
