generous community! Special gifts from Bella Artworks Studio, The Chocolate
Factory, Grenada Gardens, Jan Anderson, Esther from Up Curls and Brookdale

may do so by making a donation of any amount to Madrone Hospice. Stop by
our administrative office at 255 Collier Circle in Yreka and please bring your
donation and your favorite photo with you, we will scan it and return it to you
while you are here. We look forward to seeing you there!!
Notes from Terrie Berentsen, Executive Director, Madrone Hospice, Inc.
It’s been my pleasure and honor to have become the Executive Director for Madrone Hospice Inc. In doing so, I’ve taken the time to read all the old newsletters, they are wonderful. I’ve discovered an article written by our former Executive Director Audrey Flower which I hope you all will enjoy…. {again}
“I recently read a story worth repeating. A lady was standing at the kitchen sink one day washing dishes. Her three year old daughter was standing on a chair beside her “helping and chatting”. The mother’s mind was a million miles away but she thought she was nodding in all the right places until her daughter took her face in her soapy little hands and said, “Mommy! Listen to me with your eyes.”
In hospice we often use the expression “being present”. “Being present” means letting the other person talk...or not. Being comfortable with silence and not compelled to ask questions or give advice. It may be done at a time of crisis or it may be their time when someone simply wants to relive or reflect on an important moment or decision. It means no cell phones, no computer screens and no furtive glances at your watch. It means sitting back and giving that person time, one on one…and ‘listening with your eyes’.
It takes practice to be a good listener. We are programmed to keep things moving. We are busy trying to solve problems as soon as a person starts to talk. We even walk down the street saying; “Hi, how are you?” and continue walking without waiting for a response. When was the last time someone listened to your story?
As we draw close to this year’s end, maybe there is a way to give something that doesn’t cost a dime...just time. It may be time spent with an ill friend or caregiver. It may be asking an older relative to help you put some thoughts on tape about their family history. It may be a tea party with your grandchildren, your daughter or your mom. It may be you will receive more than you give.
To know the sacred, we must slow down and pay attention… Look for a spark in the eyes of a friend, Listen for a voice on the wind.

Madrone Hospice, Inc. would like to congratulate Sara Kerr on becoming the new
Program Manager for Madrone Senior Services!! Sara has been a faithful employee
with Madrone Hospice, working in the Senior Program, for several years. Sara
could be seen in the office, answering phones, scheduling seniors to ride the bus
and delivering meals for homebound seniors. She’s also worked with The Hospice
Shop, helping in the donation center sorting through clothes and helping to
organize. While she is going to miss those job duties, especially delivering meals as
she’s grown quite attached to the seniors we serve, she’s quite excited to start a new chapter in her life.
Sara would like to take a moment to remind the community about the programs offered by Madrone Senior Services.
Offering an array of programs from the Senior Lunch Program, Home Delivered Meals and the Senior Bus (for seniors over 60) to programs everyone can use such as daily fitness groups, crochet and
crafting groups and even card playing groups.
For questions regarding any of the resources Madrone Senior Services has to offer or to see if you or a family member may qualify for some of these services, please call Sara at 530-841-2365. You can also
stop by the Senior Center at 810 N. Oregon Street in Yreka. They are in the center Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm and would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the services we offer to our
wonderful community!!

Hospice Sabbath
November is National Hospice and Palliative Care month. As we do every year, Madrone Hospice would like to invite our church community to participate in the Hospice Sabbath the
weekend of November 15th, 2015.
During the Hospice Sabbath, if your church has chosen to participate, a moment of silence will be observed during your service to reflect and remember those we have loved and lost, but still continue to hold close to our hearts. We will provide your church with a white rose. The white rose is a symbol of
the hope and dignity provided by hospice. It is also a symbol of the special memories we treasure of those loved ones who have
touched our lives in so many ways.
We will be sending letters to our local churches at the end of September to reserve your white
rose and to confirm the number of inserts needed for your Sunday program. We look forward to sharing this day with you. For
questions please contact Madrone Hospice, Inc. at 530-842-3160.
Light Up a Life
This is an annual event of remembrance and an
opportunity to honor those who have made a special
impact on our lives.
Please join us Friday, December 4th at 5:30pm. You may
add the names of your loved ones to our memorial candle
lighting ceremony by making a donation of any amount
in their memory to
Madrone Hospice, Inc.
All donations received
will go to support the
Madrone House.
Please contact Cleo at
530-842-6200 for
more information.
Time
A Poem by:
Anna Baggs
A tribute to my husband of 50 years Ronald Baggs…..
50 years, 5 months, 10 days. How can I say they were not enough when they were filled with so many adventures….
So many plans realized
So many obstacles overcome
So many joys bubbling up in our days together
So many surprises unwrapped
So many special days celebrated
So many ideas nurtured to fruition
So much support for individual dreams
So many near misses averted
So many rough patches gotten through
So many problems overcome
So many hugs and kisses planted
So much love grown a heart nearly bursts to hold it all
So many laughs shared they echo inside me like a brook’s water over rounded stones
So much music and well worn books shared
So many pets loved and incorporated into our family
So much personal and professional growth fostered.
In sickness and in health we supported one another. Until death do us part. And here is the surprise I find…
Death does not separated that which has grown together and Love is forever and reaches through time
in both directions.
Bending back in our memories and forward in our hearts and actions. No parting of spirits here...You
will be in my heart forever….
Rest in Peace my best friend forever, Rest in Peace.
