LIGHT UP A LIFE

November 2011

HOSPICE SABBATH

A big thank you goes out to all the local

churches that participated in Hospice Sabbath

on November 5th and 6th.

In special recognition of their great ef-

forts, our Hospice Manager, Terrie Berentsen,

went to the Callahan Community Church to

thank them. Over the past 10 years, their con-

gregation has made monthly donations total-

ing about $13,000. The fund had originally

been started by Darlene Eklund, who has

since passed away, however, the monthly do-

nations have continued.

It is wonderfully dedicated groups and

individuals, like the Callahan Community

Church, that make our services possible.

Thank you!

SCARF CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED!

Karen Fellows of Sunriver, OR, Norma Parry of Yreka, and Karyn Adams of Central Point, OR were the first, second and third place winners, respectively, in this year’s scarf contest sponsored by the Hos-pice Heartisans.

If you would like to see all of the scarves entered, they are on Sisplay at the Heartisan Boutique. All of the scarves submitted are for sale, except for the first place winner. Proceeds go to the Madrone Hospice House.

The first place scarf will be auctioned off at the Madrone Hospice Art Auction which will take place on March 16th at the Miner’s Inn Convention Center.

The Hospice Heartisan Boutique hosts the scarf contest annually. If anyone is interested in participating next year, please come into the Heartisan Boutique for more information, or contact Norma Geyer at 842-2547.

First, Second and Third Place Scarves

Please join our staff and volunteers as we celebrate “Light up a Life” on Friday, December 2nd at 5:30 pm. This brief ceremony begins with music at 5:30 followed by the reading of names in memory of loved ones and culminating with the lighting of the tree in Old Town Yreka.

Light up a Life is an evening of remembrance and an opportunity to honor those who have made an impact on our lives. Each name is in memory or a tribute to a special individual.

You may add the names of your loved ones by making a donation in their memory. These contributions ensure the continuation of the services Madrone Hos-pice offers.

Individuals who donate $50 or more will receive a special holiday ornament in recognition of your support and as a remembrance of your loved one.

Local artist and author, Catherine McElroy (AKA Queenie Mac) has completed a new alphabet book which is a delight for all ages! Why does this matter to Madrone Hospice? Catherine has generously offered to donate a percentage of all sales originating from Hospice to Hospice! What does this mean to you? If you would like to take a “fanciful frolic through the alphabetical animal kingdom with alliterations galore” and wonderfully imaginative, bright, and educational watercolor illustrations in a beautifully hard-bound book all while helping to support Madrone Hospice, contact Lydia at 842-6200 and order your copy (or copies) today! The price is $19.99 each. Catherine will sign and dedicate each copy at your request.

Notes from Audrey Flower, Executive Director

November brings to mind two special days… …Thanksgiving of course, when we remember how blessed we are, and Veterans Day. This is the first year we have participated in the new “We Honor Veterans” program developed by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. In recognition of those who sacrificed so much for our freedom, we are honored to join progressive hospices nationwide in recognizing the special needs of veterans at the end of life. This includes the goal of understanding special issues such as isolation, stoicism, PTSD or lack of family understanding of what they have been through. By understanding these issues, we hope to be able to help them reach out to their family and friends, and recognize the impact

of their service on their lives. “We Honor Veterans” has four levels of participation, each level representing a higher

commitment and greater complement of services specific to the veteran receiving hospice services. Madrone Hospice has met requirements for the first and second star and we are currently working on our third star. At this time, there is only one hospice in California who has earned three stars. In addition to training our staff on end-of-life issues and benefits for veterans and their families, we have worked closely with the local veteran’s programs to improve and expand our services to veterans. This wonderful program allows veterans at the end-of-life in Siskiyou County to receive the respect, dignity and compassion they so deserve.

As we count our blessings, keep in mind that many of the blessings we enjoy have come through the efforts of those persons, past and present, who protected the freedoms we enjoy.

Gazing at the night sky. Imagining a world beyond our own. Remembering those who have gone before.

Moments like this can be the very definition of peace. Coming to grips with our place in this world.

How to Help a Grieving Friend

During the Holidays With the holidays quickly approaching,

many are becoming excited about upcoming

traditions, gift giving and family meals. How-

ever, for those who have lost a loved one, the

holidays may be more difficult.

Often, friends and family of those who

have lost someone are unsure of how to act or

what to say during the holidays. We would

like to make some suggestions:

Be supportive of the way they choose to

handle the holidays—they may wish to

follow traditions, or choose to start new

ones. Remember—there is no right or

wrong way to celebrate the holidays

Offer to help decorate for the holidays

Offer to help with holiday shopping

Make a donation in memory of their loved

one

Invite them to volunteer with you during the holiday season

Offer to help with everyday tasks—sometimes they can become overwhelming, especially when

dealing with the emotions and memories that come with the holidays

Invite them to attend holiday services with your family, or to participate in your holiday traditions

Listening to their memories, their feelings, or to their silence can be the most meaningful of all

Essentially, the best way to help those who are grieving during the holidays is to let them know

you care and are available to them. Staying in touch is especially important during this time of year. A

simple phone call or Christmas card can make a big difference.

At Madrone Hospice, we offer a variety of valuable resources for those who are struggling with

grief and loss. For more information, call the Hospice House at 842-3160.

Breakfast Club A wonderful spin on the typical

grief support group – while this group does offer support, they do so more in the club format, or as one member put it “this isn’t a support group, this is a peer group” that just happens to have one thing in common: we have all lost someone.

Their main activity is meeting for breakfast at 10:00 am on the second and fourth Fridays of each month at the Purple Plum Restaurant. Activities include group outings to local attractions and events, potlucks and parties.

Group members range from 14 to 90+ years of age, all walks of life, and all aspirations. If you would like to join the group, or even just take them for a test drive, come meet with them at the Purple Plum at 10 a.m. on the 2nd or 4th Friday of any month. Call Madrone Hospice with any questions at 842-3160.
