From the Editor’s LabJoni Mitchell’s voice filled my soul through the earbuds, with her orchestral rendition of ‘Both Sides Now’.

How apt, I thought to myself. My mind drifted back to the science lab where I was extracting DNA from clinical samples while my students diligently took notes over my shoulders.

Now, a past lifetime, I told myself.

It has been three months since I left Perth to pursue an MBA in AGSM. Compared to Perth, a place where I have lived and fell in love for the past 10 years, Sydney appears to me a smoky, dusty, and stiflingly commercialised place.

Is MBA the right path? If yes, would it be enough? Will I ever achieve my dream in saving medical research?

Only time will tell and with time, my reader, I believe anything is possible._____________________________________

American poet, Henry David Thoreau once wrote:

So here I welcome you, distinguish readers, to the first issue of AGSM STAR Magazine 2014 where we will share our doubts, dreams, and journey with you. And I implore you to share yours with us.

My (Virginia’s) eighth grade teacher shared a poem titled, “Ideals,” by James Allen which resonated with me:

“As you think, you travel; and as you love, you attract.You are today where your thoughts have brought youYou will be tomorrow where your thoughts take youIn your hand will be placed the exact result of your thoughtsYou will receive that which you earn no more, no less Whatever your environment may be,you will fall, remain, or rise with your thoughts, your wisdom, your ideal.”

Our vision for the Student Society is to strengthen connections among fellow students and work with the AGSM to promote a rich social, cultural and intellectual environment to help the cohort learn, advance their personal and professional development, and enable them to have the best student experience possible.

There is a wealth of networks to take advantage of, across AGSM alumni and current EMBA, MBT, and exchange students, as well as the greater business community. We aim to facilitate these connections through official events, as well as providing opportunities for informal interactions on a more regular basis.

Furthermore, we aim to contribute to the collaboration between the AGSM, the ASB and UNSW to strengthen the long-term bonds and the unity between these three entities, from a student perspective.

In the end, that’s what the MBA is all about: expanding horizons and perspectives by experiencing new, unknown and challenging situations, whether individually or in diverse groups.

Virginia was born in Sydney and grew up in Canada. In undergrad, she studied psychology at Duke University, where she was also

a captain on the varsity rowing team. She has experience in public relations, implementing communication and thought leadership

strategies. Prior to that, she managed accounts and projects for clients including NCAA, NHL, MLS and NBA sports teams. Writing with

her pen resting on her ring finger rather than her middle finger, Virginia Kane is the newly elected President of the AGSM Student Society.

Born and raised in Hamburg, Frederik Mayeres was among the best fencers in Germany. He completed his Bachelor of Science in

Business Science and Management before taking a job as an international commodity trader at one of the world’s biggest chemical

trading companies. Just before joining AGSM, he was on the verge of making it into “German Hollywood”, after being called up for the

last round of casting for a TV game show, where he would have contested against a German celebrity for 3 million Euros.

How does one strengthen ALUmNI relations?

by Bhuvan Bhushan (Alumni Relations Manager StuSoc)It was a warmish winter day in the city of Allahabad that Bhuvan

Bhushan joined the ranks of those nudging India’s population

closer to 700 million. Having done most of his schooling in Delhi

and Mumbai, followed by working in India and Dubai, Sydney

feels almost like home to him (for now). Seven years of banking

and over three years in real estate were his calling but as his

wife, Chandni puts it nicely, “it’s not all about the money, honey”.

The journey at AGSM has begun and thanks to the class I hold the position of the Alumni Relations Manager (ARM), which I feel plays a critical role in being the bridge between the Alumni and the cohort. The whole journey as envisioned over the year will be about ‘Reconnecting the Alumni with AGSM’.

Over a period of time we have created ties with many of the MBAs passing out of these hallowed gates and there seems more could be done to strengthen these bonds.

Broadly there are three things I hope to achieve along with Douglas & Swati (Vice

Presidents of Alumni Relations):

First, create connections with the Alumni in Sydney who currently work in industries that our cohort have interest in.

second, create a platform for the Alumni so that they can reach out to AGSM for assistance or inputs (intellectual capital) for their ventures and ideas.

Third, work upon the International Alumni chapters to make this MBA a place where we truly build our ‘Global Network’.

I believe it is for each and every one of us in the cohort to play a role in making the time and investment in these 16 months count and hopefully we will all step out with the spirit of ‘wanting to give back’ to AGSM. I have always believed in this old Latin saying – ‘Carpe Diem’ – ‘Seize the Day’; complete with a tattoo on how I view this journey at AGSM - of seizing moments that I will cherish forever.

Hailing from Coimbatore (a.k.a. the Manchester of Southern

India), Arun Pandiyan is passionate about sports and was a

Kabbadi player and district champion in athletics. However, his

fondness for taste and food has since overpowered his passion

for sports, turning him into a belly boy! After graduating with a

degree in Mechanical Engineering, Arun stepped into IT at a

leading consulting and outsourcing organization, TCS, spending

6 years in the roles of software engineer, IT analyst, and project

manager.___________________________________________________

StuSoc 2015 strives to support the cohort in every facet of MBA’s core functions in the form of events, fun activities, guest lectures, field trips, alumni network, and addressing concerns/grievances. We focus on creating better student experience for the entire cohort. I am glad and proud to be part of this student driven committee.

We want to build an all inclusive mission and values to assist us in achieving our vision, though I understand that it will not be an easy task to accomplish this. Nevertheless, I believe that our StuSoc, cohort and individual clubs are more than ready to take up this challenge and work towards a unified vision.

As a member of StuSoc and the cohort of 2015, I envision standards and policies that will benefit the cohort and the wider community in a positive way. I envisage that the key initiatives of Stusoc 2015 will develop into a legacy in years to come and am pleased to be part of it and would sincerely handle the royal coffers.

But I and many other CEOs see the current debate about work/life balance as totally unbalanced. Many articles written about the subject prescribe a limited amount of time for work so you can achieve ‘balance’ with other activities, or just hang around chilling out. CEOs and leaders are all busy involved people who very rarely ‘just hang around’. As one example, Bob Cameron is the Founder, ex-Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Centennial Coal Company Limited.

In Bob’s words:

‘I’ve always done things outside the business. I was Chairman of the Hunter Valley Grammar School for 12 years, as well as Chairman of the local hospital. I always enjoyed being involved in the community and received the Order of Australia for services to the Hunter Valley and to tertiary education. I was also closely involved with Newcastle and NSW Universities. I’ve enjoyed not only this work but also other activities too. Family is also very important to me, I have 2 girls and I never played golf or other individual sports as I was always too busy being involved in their lives.’

CEOs are busy people. Most will think about their business for the vast majority of their waking hours, even if they are playing sport, on holidays or it is the weekend. Most have a good life balance because they have been able to prioritise what is important to them. This will change over time, but the important thing is to work out what is important for you then manage your lifestyle accordingly.

Thirsty THURsdAy Picks

Seen through the eyes of someone from the US, a lot of things in Australia are quite unique – an endless supply of strange animals, the long black and the flat white, and the Holden Ute, just to name a few.

However, the Australian native that most recently caught my eye was the finger lime whose juicy interior pearls justify the nickname “citrus caviar”. The product of a delicate rainforest tree, these small fruits has recently garnered much attention from chefs worldwide with uses ranging from a simple jam to an elegant garnish for oysters.

I personally recommend using them to enhance your traditional margarita. Finger limes are seasonally available at Thomas Dux in Surry Hills.

THE 573 CAVIAR mARGARITA

In a cocktail shaker, muddle the following ingredients:

Half of a traditional lime (cut into four pieces)The pearls of half a finger limeTwo teaspoons of raw sugar

Fill the shaker with ice and add 50 ml of tequila (I recommend El Jimador).

Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.

Strain over ice into a glass.

Garnish with a thin finger lime section, or use a mix of finger lime pearls and salt to rim the glass.
