This map illustrates satellite-detectedwater extent as of 07 January 2018 overBrickaville distric, Atsinanana region, inMadagascar as detected by Sentinel-1. Asof 07 January 2018, ~ 2600 ha of landover Brickaville commune seem to beinundated and 2400 in Andovorantocommune. These zones are mainlyagricultural and/or swamps. Thesewaters seem to be the results of therecent heavy rain related also to thecyclone AVA-18 which made landfall the05 January 2018. It is likely that floodwaters have been systematicallyunderestimated along highly vegetatedareas along main river banks and withinbuilt-up urban areas because of thespecial characteristics of the satellitedata used. This is a preliminary analysisand has not yet been validated in thefield. Please send ground feedback toUNITAR UNOSAT.
