Each year, World Vision is one of the charities that the girls embrace. This year, Mackellar Girls has raised the remarkable amount of $11 000 for World Vision. This donation will certainly facilitate many worthwhile projects in villages and communities to assist people fight hunger. Early Leave for Students Important learning for students in the classroom continues until the end of the school year, as students continue towards finishing the year’s teaching curriculum. The year’s syllabuses are not finished when yearly examinations are held; they must be completed after the examinations. It, therefore, is important that parents organise their family holidays in holiday time, not school time. If students are taken out of school early, as some parents have expected, for family holidays it greatly disrupts students’ learning. I am not able to approve lengthy leave of absence for early holidaymakers School Fees All outstanding school fees should be paid by the end of the school year. A number of students urgently need to get things up-to-date in their elective subjects – these fees cover the cost of the materials that students have used this year. Parents and students should be aware that most elective subjects carry additional fees. They may only be chosen to be studied by students if the associated fees are paid, unless discussed with the Principal. Congratulations for high achievement to: Nicole, Jina and Jordan (Y12) for their nominations for ARTEXPRESS, the exhibition of the best

Term 4 Week 6

TERM 4 PREFECT NEWSLETTER SEGMENT This term so far has been exceptionally busy. We have been readily preparing for our Multicultural Day on Monday 4th December, have attended the NBSC Leadership Day at Manly Golf Club and have successfully organised the first Year 11 Sleepover.

The Leadership Day was a great opportunity to get to know the other young leaders from the College, and we participated in team building and leadership activities that were as fun as they were helpful.

Our Sleepover will take place in the school Hall on Friday 17th November and will be filled with games, pizza and Grease! All of Year 11 are excited for this night as it marks the beginning of our last year together and we are well aware that we won’t have another opportunity like this once our assessments and the HSC kick in.

Multicultural Day is always a great day where all students across the school can showcase their cultures while also experiencing the cultures of others. This year we have 20 different stalls representing different countries which will be serving food, drinks and providing cultural activities for all students. Tokens will be on sale at the front office during the week before Multicultural Day, so get in early to avoid the queues.

The School Captains, Vannia and Jaime, and Vice Captains, Andie and Laura attended a Leadership Day at Parliament House on Wednesday 15th November, with another day at Government House in February.

As we approach the end of term we would like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday. The Prefects

LIBRARY REPORT The library continues to be a hub of learning and fun. The Year 7, 8 and 9 Book clubs participated in a Halloween breakout in week five. The students enjoyed the challenge of solving the clues to break into the box. The teachers will be implementing this style of activity into their lessons in order to develop 21st century learning skills. The book clubs will spend the rest of the year creating new release book trailers, which will be displayed on the library TV screen.

The pictures books, created by Year 7 English classes, are now on display in the library. These amazing books demonstrate the talent and creativity of our students. Please encourage your daughters to come and view them over the next few weeks.

As part of Mackellar’s strategic goals to implement positive education, the library has a ‘what are you looking forward to?’ board for the girls. The aim of this is for the students to develop a positive mindset to recognise life’s opportunities. Rebecca Reed and Alice Brennan, Teacher Librarians

PREMIER’S ANZAC SCHOLARSHIP Over the September holidays, I was given the amazing opportunity to travel to London, Belgium and France, as a part of the Premier’s Anzac Memorial Scholarship. As a part of this trip, 21 other students from across NSW and I were able to visit and learn about the battlefields of World War I from an experienced historian who travelled with us, and commemorate the thousands of brave soldiers who fought valiantly 100 years ago. Our trip followed in the footsteps of the Anzac soldiers, travelling first to London to explore the incredible Churchill War Rooms, the iconic Trafalgar Square and conduct a brief service at the Australian War Memorial near Hyde Park. The tour then went to Ypres, Belgium, where we were able to attend the daily Menin Gate Last Post service, which has been held every evening since 1928, excluding the time in which World War II occurred. At this service, my fellow peers and I were lucky enough to stand as the Line of Honour at the ceremony. One of the most memorable events of the trip was attending the Polygon Wood Dawn Service, which commemorated the brave soldiers who had fought in the battle of Polygon Wood on the 26th of September, 100 years ago. It was a once in a lifetime event that allowed us to meet the Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove and Belgium’s lovely Princess Astrid. We then travelled around the major battlefields of WWI, including Passchendaele, the Somme, Bullecourt and Fromelles. We were given the opportunity to live like the Anzac soldiers for a day, receiving a traditional Bully-Beef meal, dressed in soldiers clothing, and conducting realistic military drills used by soldiers at the time. This was a serious eye-opener and allowed us to relate in a small way to the soldiers who fought. The most unforgettable and heartbreaking parts of the trip was visiting the thousands of white limestone graves, lined up in rows upon rows which seemed to travel endlessly. I was especially moved by the heartfelt epitaphs carved into some of the gravestones, one in particular reminding me that the immense sacrifice of the courageous soldiers over 100 years ago should never be forgotten or taken for granted. The epitaph inscribed was “sunshine passes, shadows fall, but true remembrance outlasts them all”. I am so grateful to have been given this incredible once in a life-time opportunity, where I have been given a new perspective of World War I and the soldiers who fought there. By Grace ,Year 10

VISUAL ARTS

Three of our Year 12 students have received a nomination for Art Express, the prestigious HSC Visual Arts exhibition that showcases the most outstanding body of work submissions across NSW each year.

Paintings by Nicole and Jina have been acknowledged as amongst this year’s exemplary submissions. Nicole Finlay’s mural-format series titled “Today is Tomorrow’s Story” explores notions of family, migration and heritage across generations, and Jina Lewis’s work titled “The Agony of Aleppo” offers a critique on the refugee crisis in Syria. Jordon also received a nomination for her work “Quiet Battles”. Further to this, 3 students have had their work selected for display at Express Yourself at the Manly Art Gallery and Museum in early 2018. This exhibition is a platform for the most successful submissions from schools across the Northern Beaches, highlighting the talent and creativity of students across the breadth of expressive forms in the Visual Arts course.

Congratulations are extended to Ava for her Collection of Works titled “The Dismantlement of Time”, Chloe for her photographic and film submission, “Surveillance”, and Nancy for her sculptures, “Masks of the Common Era”.

Congratulations to all students on these commendations, and indeed to all of our outgoing Year 12 students for the outstanding effort and commitment they showed in bringing their HSC Bodies of Work to a successful resolution.
