OHA Gala Tribute Award 2013TRANSCRIPT
HONORING DONALD “MAC” MCKENZIE
ORAL HEALTH AMERICA | 2013
GALA TRIBUTE AWARD
Donald “Mac” McKenzie was unanimously selected by
Oral Health America’s (OHA) Board of Directors for the
2013 Gala Tribute Award. For more than fifteen years, Mac
dedicated his energy to OHA and helped the organization
grow to what it is today. Mac’s legacy has fundamentally
changed the way this nation’s children view the dangers
of smokeless tobacco through his involvement with
OHA’s NSTEP®. Basic children’s dental health in our most
vulnerable communities has been forever changed through
his leadership with the National Sealant Alliance. He
continues to demonstrate what it means to be innovative,
creative, pioneering, and successful.
Beyond creating a nurturing environment for OHA to
achieve excellence, Mac has had an impact across the entire
dental universe through his tenure at GC International,
his service on countless committees for the Dental Trade
Alliance, his guidance and stewardship as a board member at
OHA and of course, his role in creating an economic vision for
his beloved Scottsdale community. Congratulations Mac!

“MAC” HAS MADE A SIGNIFICANT LIFELONG CONTRIBUTION
to enriching the Dental Industry and I am fortunate to call him my
colleague and friend. Mac had his own unique style and for those of
us that have worked with him, he held high standards for performance
and much was achieved through his inspiration. One cannot forget
Mac’s amazing contributions in his charitable works, which included
OHA and the Arizona Kiwanis Organization. He dedicated himself
through his time and energy by making significant advances for
the causes of these organizations. Congratulations Mac! A standing
ovation for you! I am proud to be part of your outstanding history.
-Your friend, Carolyn M. Van Eck
TO “MAC”Remembering, with great admiration and affection, your dental and “life”
journey over the many years of our friendship. Your contributions, both on
and off the “dental field” are the embodiment of dedication, achievement, and
contribution that few have achieved.
Your courage, as you faced health issues, your outlook on life while always
managing a smile, together with your sense of humor, are examples of how
you uniquely coped with, and overcame the most difficult of life’s challenges.
Your ability to deliver a speech and get to the heart of the matter, to gain
support for your “cause” and seemingly to be so relaxed as if talking to a
friend, are extraordinary traits that have garnered so much admiration from
your peers, associates and friends.
You must have big feet—for you have left large and deep impressions with
everything and everybody you touched along the way.
Congratulations on this significant recognition by Oral Health America and
your contributions to the core values OHA represents today.

MAC MEMORIESSo many great memories, Mac.
What is a vinyl polysiloxane impression material? What is a glass ionomer?
And who is GC? Boy I am glad you talked me into taking
the line!
Training at my house, mixing and more mixing and you blowing up
balloons . . . Great Washington meeting . . . you wanted to take us out to
best restaurant in Seattle and I didn’t know where one was.
You offered me the job as sales manager . . . Sue & I are going to
Singapore, Hong Kong & Tokyo. This is exciting.
Then you can’t make the trip, so we are on our own to meet the GC folks.
Drive to Anaheim, “let’s stop for lunch, where ever you normally do,” so I
pulled into the Standard Station for a sandwich . . . that was the last time
you let me select a place to eat!
Getting me involved with IADR and ADTA, the committees, chairman of
the golf tournament, dinners with key research people—that was fun.
Tux’s for the major conventions . . . a big hit and made us the talk of
the meeting.
Our trip to Europe . . . The Savoy Hotel for lunch, the green tux jacket,
about 4 sizes too small . . . to Scotland, lunch at Goodwill, “the best place
in town” . . . Belgium, Germany, France . . . remember when we finally
found my Wild Turkey? Damn that was expensive! Then back to England
for the glass ionomer seminar at Leed’s Castle . . . What a great trip!
Sales meetings, company awards dinners in Chicago . . . always first class.
Because of what you taught me and the people you introduced me to, I
was able to achieve what I did. You were my hero then and you still are!
And best of all, you are a great friend! This award was long over-due and
richly deserving.

CONGRATULATIONS MAC! The OHA Board made the right choice in their unanimous selection of
you as recipient of this year’s Gala Tribute Award.
In the Professional Relations world, you were a role model for so
many of us. During your tenure as Chair of the American Dental Trade
Association in the early ‘90s, your guidance and support helped OHA
reinvent itself at a critical time in the organization’s history. Your
direct involvement with our NSTEP® (National Spit Tobacco Education
Program) and the National Sealant Alliance showed us that our voice
could reach from coast to coast. They helped to set the stage for the
many successful, national OHA campaigns that followed.
It has been a distinct pleasure to work with you and an honor to count
you as a friend. This recognition is so richly deserved.
Again, our warmest congratulations!
Best Wishes,George & Diane Rhodes
