Ifyoudon’tuseSetupAssistanttotransferinformationwhenyoufirststartupyourMacmini,youcandoitlaterusingMigrationAssistant.OpenMigrationAssistantintheUtilitiesfolderinLaunchpad.ForhelpusingMigrationAssistant,openHelpCenterandsearchfor“MigrationAssistant.”

To set up your Mac mini:1 InSetupAssistant,followtheonscreeninstructionsuntilyougettothe“TransferInformationtoThisMac”screen.

 To do a basic setup,select“Don’ttransfernow”andclickContinue.Followtheremainingpromptstoselectyourwirelessnetwork,setupanaccount,andexitSetupAssistant.

 To transfer information from a Time Machine backup or another disk,select“FromaTimeMachinebackuporotherdisk”andclickContinue.SelectthebackuportheotherdiskthatyouwanttomigrateinformationfromandclickContinue.Followtheonscreendirectionsfortransferringtheinformation.

Ifyoudon’tintendtokeeporuseyourothercomputer,it’sbesttodeauthorizeitfromplayingmusic,videos,oraudiobooksthatyou’vepurchasedfromtheiTunesStore.Deauthorizingacomputerpreventsanysongs,videos,oraudiobooksyou’vepurchasedfrombeingplayedbysomeoneelse,andfreesupanotherauthorizationforuse.Forinformationaboutdeauthorizing,chooseiTunesHelpfromtheHelpmenuiniTunes.

AfteryousetupyourMacmini,checkforupdatedsoftware.ChooseApple()>SoftwareUpdatefromthemenubarandfollowtheonscreeninstructions.

Setting Up with Server AssistantThefirsttimeyouturnonyourMacminiwithMacOSXLionServerinstalled,ServerAssistantasksforsomebasicinformationthatLionServerneedsinordertostartupandconnecttothenetwork.BereadytoprovidethefollowinginformationthefirsttimeyouturnonyourMacmini:

 Anaccountnameandpassword Anorganizationalnamethat’suniqueinyourcompany Ahostname,whichcanbeforyourlocalnetworkonly,foryourlocalnetworkandVPNaccessfromtheInternet,oranInternethostnameyoupurchasedfromadomainnameregistrar.

 Detailednetworksettings,includingIPaddress,subnetmask,andDNSservers.ThenetworksettingsmaybeprovidedbyyourInternetrouteroraserveronyournetwork.Ifso,itshouldbeconfiguredtoprovideyourserverthesameIPaddressallthetime(staticmappingorDHCPreservation).

ForhelpwithServerAssistant,clicktheHelpbuttoninanypane.

ForhelpsettingupMacOSXLionServerremotelyonaMacminiwithoutakeyboard,mouse,ordisplay,opentheServerapplicationandchooseServerHelpintheHelpmenu.

IfyoualreadyhaveaMacwithMacOSXServerversion10.5orlater,ServerAssistantcanhelpyouautomaticallytransfersystemsettings,servicesettings,useraccounts,files,applications,andotherinformationfromyourpreviousMacserver(anymodel)toyourMacmini.UseanEthernet,FireWire,orwirelessconnectiontotransferinformation.

Migrating Information to Your Mac miniIfyoudidn’ttransferyourinformationtoyourMacminiwhenyoufirstsetitup,youcanuseMigrationAssistanttotransferyourinformationatanytime.Forexample,usingMigrationAssistant,youcantransferyouruseraccount—includingallyourphotos,music,andfiles—fromaMacorPCtoyournewMacmini.YoucanalsotransferinformationtoaMacminifromadiskorTimeMachinebackup.

Important:  TomigrateinformationfromaMacserver,youmustdoitduringserversetup.MigrationAssistantdoesn’ttransferserverinformationaftersetup.

Putting Your Mac mini to Sleep Ifyou’llbeawayfromyourMacminiforlessthanafewdays,putittosleepinsteadofshuttingitdown.WhenyourMacminiisinsleep,youcanquicklywakeitandbypassthestartupprocess.
