DRAINING THE LAKE

The Boating Lake at Queens Park is periodically cleaned to remove any build-up of sediment, which can provide nutrients that can be detrimental to the overall water quality.

The concrete structure is also inspected to identify any defects & to undertake any repairs as necessary to ensure that the boating lake is maintained in an adequate condition for the continued enjoyment of our residents & visitors. The lake will be refilled in the new year.

THANK YOU FOR THE BUNTING!

Great gratitude to all those ladies who spent so much time knitting the bunting which made the Carnival of 2019 so memorable.

We thank the 20 ladies of Cast-on-Knitting, the 30 ladies of the 2 groups meeting at Hope House, the 20 ladies meeting at the O.A.P. Hall, the 15 ladies meeting at the Sutton-on-Sea Library Hub, & the 12 ladies from Trusthorpe Church…

In addition over 500 pennants came from Margate via Park Way, Kent Road & Regent Road, while also knitting were Annette Fearnley in Sheffield & Ruth in France.

Wool & other material was donated by Forty Winks, the St Barnabas Charity Shop & Home Sweet Home in Victoria Road.

Gratitude goes also to all those who left wool for the knitters at the Coastal Centre & to those who knitted anonymously at home & dropped their bunting in to the Centre.

Biggest thank you goes to Betty Scopes of Queensway whose vision it was. Could she have dreamt back this time last year how many miles would be knitted!!!??? Betty would also like to acknowledge the help she received from her husband Maurice who drove her all over the place for the cause & then helped put the bunting up.

Also risking life & limb on ladders were Cllr Stephanie Carruthers & Cllr Graham

Parkhurst (who is hiding behind a telegraph post in this last photo).

When it comes to enjoying retirement, Lincolnshire resident Doug West has found just the right formula. Doug began volunteering with national charity Guide Dogs over 30 years ago, & still dedicates his spare time today as a volunteer treasurer for his local fundraising group. The charity is now looking for more like him, especially one who could spare just a few hours a week to be treasurer in the Mablethorpe area.

AN APPEAL!

The role is flexible & can be fitted around work or other commitments, & training & support is provided.

Doug looks on it this way: “I retired 16 years ago & I didn’t want my skills to go to waste. Volunteering helps me to remain active & my role as treasurer keeps my brain ticking over. I love meeting people & I get to attend events & keep in touch with all my friends at Guide Dogs.”

Anyone interested in the role will need to have basic mathematical skills, be confident handling cash & be able to use email & spreadsheets. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate records of income & expenditure, banking funds, carrying out associated activities & providing regular financial updates to the local group & Guide Dogs. All out of pocket expenses are re-imbursed. If you think you might have what it takes you will need to be over18 years & willing to

undergo some basic training. For more information about the role or volunteering for Guide Dogs generally, contact Community Fundraising Development Officer, Jane Shelley:

National Coastwatch Institution Mablethorpe’s Station is based at Sea View Car Park, off Quebec Road LN12 1LT (opposite The Loewen Cinema).

The Station is staffed 365 days a year, regardless of weather or circumstance. The team of dedicated Watchkeepers, Support Staff & management team are entirely voluntary, giving their valuable time free of charge, with a primary aim to ensure safety & preserve life at sea & along the shoreline.

THE EYES ALONG THE COAST

In 2012 the station was awarded DFS status, & the following year (2013) was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (the voluntary sector equivalent of an MBE - bestowed on voluntary organisations in recognition of outstanding service & excellence). To mark the festive month of December, we had a stall on Mablethorpe Christmas Market raising funds towards the day to day running of the station which depends entirely on local fund raising & donations.

THE HOLIDAY MAKERS

The people come slow but sure Some to stay, some on tour.

Our town is open to them all, With their buckets & bouncing ball.

The beach it waits for all the fun, With bats & balls & lots of sun. Donkeys ride the kids on sand,

The Mums & Dads hold tight their hands. The laughter & joy is back again. For us it is great & no real pain.

Mablethorpe’s open for another year. Come on down, enjoy the cheer.

You are Very Welcome.

Trevor Rhodes is known to many of us as a talented craftsman with his idiosyncratic “Mr Grumpy” artworks. Now soon to be available will be this book filled with funny, serious, & tongue in the cheek anecdotes & poems : a personal account of his life from his school-days (“The kids were tough, but the tough guys were the

teachers”) to the present (see the poem

on Mabo here >>>) Some of the reactions so far: “Hilarious!” “So true!” “Fascinating!”

DOG POO

I love my town, I love the park, But I’m frightened to walk there, in the dark.

Not from things, that I cannot see But that mucky mess that lays in wait for me.

I love to walk & look around But I must keep my eyes fixed to the ground.

I miss so much of the lovely sight Because of dog muck

which our streets do blight. As I walk I see the people that do not care.

They look away as their dog its load does share. Are they so lazy, they cannot see

What their dog is up to by their knee? So come on dog lovers, or, say you are.

Pick up your dog muck, be a star. Our kids, don’t look around like me.

Their feet go where they shouldn’t be. My niece died because of dog mess on the floor.

We are suffering still. We don’t need more. To all you dog lovers I send this plea:

Pick up your muck. Don’t leave it there for me.

The poem on the right is by our old friend Roy Palmer now a Chelsea Pensioner. It is from his newly published book “Roy’s Ramblings” which you can order at the Coastal Centre. Many of the poems are exceedingly moving ~ especially those which look back on he conflicts of the last century. Recently Roy was among those who welcomed Camilla Duchess of Cornwall to a day celebrating poetry. A photo of that event appears on our back page… along with another of the Crowning of our Carnival Queen Mother at the Salvation Army. Our own “Queen Mum” is the person contributing the third of the poems on these pages. Jean Broady is a prolific writer of poems despite her now being in her nineties. And she is a most vibrant personality.

The sky was blue, sunny & warm With no sign of imminent storm. The parade it stretched for half a mile & everyone told “Don’t forget to smile!”

Our Carnival Queen, Prince & Princesses With crown & cloak & beautiful dresses.

Our fire department who save lives Who shoot off leaving their wives, The lifeboat crew floating down the road, This time on wheels with a heavy load,

Coastguard, ice-cream man, Elvis the Pelvis & busy bees, All marching on in a gentle breeze.

The Queen in her lovely red car! In that she could certainly travel far! Queen Mum in her vintage carriage

Which you could hire for a posh do marriage! Marching bands & dancers too: Believe you me there were quite a few.

At last the bands began to play & very soon we were on our way… The crowds they waved & cheered & bowed… & still no sign of rain or cloud.

So many floats, too many to say: all did us proud & helped make the day. All went well never you fear,

& it will be even better next year!

A COUPLE OF PAGES OF POETRY

As she puts it at the end of another of her poems: “All in all I find I have nowt to fear: Still full of beans, quite happy… And hey! I am still here!”

Here are some photos of the glittering presentation night for NEXT GENERATION DANCE held recently at the Dunes . The inspiration behind this dance project currently taking Mablethorpe by storm is Louisa Baker a professional dancer & dance teacher who started her professional dance & teaching career at the age of 18. Having qualified as a dance teacher with the International Dance Teachers Association, & having trained as a Professional Dancer at Stageworks College in Cambridgeshire she specializes in Street, freestyle disco, commercial, rock ‘n’ roll, musical theatre, tap, jazz & lyrical, which makes her a very versatile dance teacher indeed. As well as teaching Street & commercial styles of dance in Mablethorpe Louisa prepares students for competitions across the country & is a resident member of the Big Top Show Team in Ingoldmells, working as a dancer & performer while pursuing her studies in her first year at the University of Lincoln studying for a Degree in Sociology.

“At NGD,” Louisa says, “we ensure we take the time to get to know our students, whilst supporting a good learning environment for all.

“I love working within Mablethorpe & its surrounding areas as it has such a community feel to it. Everyone knows each other & everyone supports each other like one happy family. For an ever growing dance family, that makes it the perfect environment.”

For info on how to join the classes see the NEXT

GENERATION Facebook page
