Man held form u r d e r i n g wife

A 36 year old man was arrested by city police for murdering his wife and staging a drama saying that she committed suicide in Maduravoyal on Thursday. The accused Srinivasan lodged a police complaint that his wife Indrani (33) has committed suicide at their house in Madura-voyal by hanging.

However when police questioned him about the injuries on her neck, Sr-invasan confessed that he strangulated her and faked her suicide. Investigating officers said that the couple was childless, and he sus-pected her infidelity. Fol-lowing his confession Po-lice arrested Srinivasan.

Residents living in the Mogappair and Anna Nagar neighbourhood are seeking introduction of the Farm Fresh Consumer Mobile Shop – Panai Pasu-mai Nugarvor Kadai in Tamil - in their localities so that they could purchase fruits and vegetables at af-fordable prices.

Around five years ago, the Tamil Nadu Govern-ment through its Horticul-ture Department had launched two such Farm Fresh Consumer Mobile Shops – mobile vans – to sell fresh veggies and fruits in the city. These mobile shops passed through the neighbourhoods of Myl-apore, Mandaveli, Kottur-puram, Thiruvanmiyur, Koyambedu, Vadapalani, Alwarthirunagar and Vala-saravakkam. The sale price of the kitchen items are around 10 to 15 per cent

lesser than the prevailing market prices and the prod-ucts that are sold are com-paratively fresh.

However, the scheme has since not been ex-panded to other parts of the city. “When the scheme was launched, I was ea-gerly looking forward to its extension and hoped that these mobile vans would also pass through the Mogappair neighbourhood so that we can also buy fresh fruits and vegetables

Ladies coaches to be painted in different colour

Coaches reserved for women will now be placed in the centre of trains in-stead of its rear end and will be painted in a differ-ent colour to make it eas-ily identifiable, according to Railway sources.

This will be done in suburban as well as long-distance trains, they say,

as part of the national transporter’s plan to mark 2018 as the year for secu-rity of women. The coach-es will also have CCTV cameras as an additional security measure and it is also being discussed to cover their windows with wire meshes.

Aadhaar not must for mobile SiM

The government has issued instructions to telecom operators to accept alternative identi-fication documents such as driving licence, passport and voter ID card from people who do not have an Aadhaar card. Mobile compa-nies have been asked to follow the instructions “immediately” to issue SIM cards, so that consumers are not inconvenienced.

Flyers may be able to use mobiles in planes

In a few months from now, one can browse the internet, or make calls, while flying in In-dian skies. The Government gave the go ahead to the proposal that will allow inflight connec-tivity and enable flyers to use their mobile phones while in the air. Airline companies, telecom operators and others now have to work out solutions and customer packages.

The season of ice apples – palm fruit (nungu in Tamil) – has arrived to

offer a cool solution for people to beat the sweltering heat in summer. In the Mogappair and Anna Nagar neighbour-hood it has now become an annual feature for vendors of ice apples to set up makeshift vending points along the Thi-r umangalam-Mogappair Road – especially from the Thirumangalam Junction up to the Park Road Junction.

Along this road, these ven-

dors can be found at a distance of every five metres. The vendors come from the neigh-bouring districts of Tiruvallur and Vellore. They can be spot-ted sitting with huge alumini-um vessels containing the ice apples and covered with palm leaves to prevent air from go-ing inside.

All these vendors sell the palm kernels that have been carefully removed from the black shells of the palm fruit. “Every day, we cut hundreds of palm fruits and remove the ice apples from the outer shell and load them on to the alu-

The flesh itself is al-most bland and some-what similar to the litchi in texture without the sweetness and is refresh-ing to eat. It is best eaten tender and fresh as soon as it is cut since it tends to become rubbery when stored and the sugar in-side ferments changing its taste. The season is very short and the fruits usually appear in early summer.

The fruit is packed with minerals especially phosphorus and calcium. It is extremely cooling for the body, contains B com-plex vitamins like thia-mine and riboflavin and almost no fat or carbohy-drates. It is often used in traditional therapy to cure stomach and skin disorders.

Seasonal problems like prickly heat affect children and grownups alike in summer. Ice ap-ple is an excellent remedy for prickly heat. The jelly has a tender brownish-yellow skin. Watery fluid is found inside the jelly which has excellent cool-ing properties.

Presently most of these vendors are selling a dozen ice apples for Rs 60 and sometimes they give 15 pieces for the same price upon bar-gaining. “The price has gone up. Last year we sold a dozen palm fruits for Rs 45 to Rs 50. This year we had to review the price as the cost of transportation has gone up after the Tamil Nadu govern-ment increased the bus fare significant-ly,” said Kolandaiv-el, another vendor.

People travelling on the road by car and two-wheelers stop by in large num-bers to buy the ice apples. “These palm fruits serve as excel-lent body coolants during summer. Be-sides, few fruits can beat the taste of this jelly-like fruit that is loved by everyone in our family. We make it a point to buy these fruits at least once in two-three days,” said Keshav, a resident of an apartment in Col-lector Nagar, who purchased two doz-en fruits.

Incidentally, the palm is Tamil Na-du’s state tree.

While Information Tech-nology companies have m o v e d f r o m

southern extensions of Chen-nai and begun to embrace the western suburbs by setting up companies and IT parks in Ambattur, accommodation for bachelors in and around Mogappair and its surround-ings continues to be a hassle to this day. House owners are extremely reluctant to rent out their premises to bache-lors. Even spinsters and young girls face a similar problem in renting homes.

Except for a few mansions and some ladies hostels that function in Mogappair East and West, single men and women find it extremely dif-ficult to find an accommoda-tion in the neighbourhood.

“I was working in Benga-luru and recently moved in to Chennai after the Informa-tion Technology company, where I was working trans-ferred me here. For the last two months I have been try-ing to find a decent place to stay but without success. Wherever I go, the owners refuse to give me a house on

rent the moment they know that I am a bachelor. I don’t know why we bachelors are viewed with suspicion despite working in a reputed com-

pany,” asked Vikram Rathod, a 28-year-old software engineer.

“In fact, while searching for

houses, I was surprised to find that one apartment - Mallihai Apart-ment – in Mogappair Eri Scheme Road had a board outside with

several conditions including one that mentioned that the flats won’t be rented out to bachelors,” added Rathod.

Very few house owners are willing to give their premises on rent to bache-lors. Usually these are one-bed room portions. “Mostly such places have a run down look or appear to be dingy and are usually on the ter-race. For this they charge Rs 5,000 or more. What’s wrong in a group of bachelors tak-ing a decent two bed room flat on rent,” asks Balram Rao, who has moved to Chennai from Secunder-abad.

Agrees Shanmugham, a real estate broker in Mogap-pair East. “House owners have a feeling that bachelors would not maintain the house properly. Also, there is a fear that if a few bachelors get together for a party, the neighbours would complain

about the noise. Therefore, house owners clearly tell us they want only family as tenants,” he adds.
