The most Northerly venue on the 2014 calendar, and one which makes a
welcome return after a hiatus in 2013, Croft Autodrome in North Yorkshire offers an intriguing 2.127-mile lap for the final rounds of both Mini Se7en and Mini Miglia Challenges.
MINI SE7ENAfter a barnstorming weekend at Donington Park last time out, the 1000cc Challenge goes right down to the wire with effectively a two-way, head-to-head, contest
between reigning Champion; Andrew Deviny, and last year’s fourth-placed runner overall; Darren Thomas. A second place in Round 11 followed by a win in Round 12 elevated Thomas to within six points of Deviny, after dropped scores are applied, and despite the complicated scoring permutations, one more win for Thomas should clinch him his first title as Deviny has the bigger scores to drop. In third overall, and after his first ever series win at Oulton in July, Graeme Davis then scored

his second win at Donington, but only a further brace will give him a slim outside chance of pipping the other pair, and then only if Deviny fails to start or Thomas fails to finish both races. Behind the leading trio, Leon Wightman has climbed the pecking order thanks to a fighting pair of second places in successive meetings, and will be one to look out for a maiden win soon, while if his terrible run of mechanical woes can be cured, early-season winner Ashley Davies is a good bet to be challenging for a podium place too.
In the milder-tuned 1300cc
S-Class, Shaun Tarlton became the provisional Class Champion at Donington after yet another pair of ding-dong battles with Ian Deviny, each taking a Class win apiece, while Tarlton is also in-line to be crowned top Mini Se7en Novice unless Spencer Wanstall can beat him or any other Novice in both Croft encounters.
So, with 12 rounds down and just two to go, the tension and excitement as the 49th season of Mini 7 nears its conclusion is as high as ever – expect no less in 2015!

While the Mini Se7en title chase is close, the 1300cc Mini
Miglia Challenge has an incredible five possible Champions-elect heading into the Croft finale, and the points permutations are bewildering, further complicated by a pending appeal against exclusion by one of the contenders.
With three victories to his credit and four second places this season, Kane Astin sits atop the table by a single point from Dan Wheeler, the latter having raised his tally of wins to four with a Donington double in August, but his exclusion at Oulton in July may well count him out of the reckoning on dropped scores. Also with four wins, Rupert Deeth dropped to fourth in the standings after Donington, having a big ‘off’ along the pit straight in the second race after a solid third in race one, so Deeth will have his work cut out to have his car all straight again ready
for Croft. These three, then, have to be considered the joint-favourites, but Colin Peacock in third overall, and Tony Le May in fifth have been shadowing the leaders all season with consistent high finishes, and with only a few points covering their positions, either one of them could sneak by on the rails to snatch the Miglia
crown with a win or further podium finishes.
Others who could put a spanner in the works of the title chasers are Dave Drew, Aaron Smith and James
Coulson, all of whom are capable of scoring the big points on their day, but either way, there is very rarely such a wide spread of bets outside of the Aintree Grand National – and don’t be surprised to see both races at Croft won a by a short nose!

As I write this, our last meeting of the year is rapidly approaching, namely Croft. Looking
at the current Championship tables, it is exciting that positions are still ‘all to play for’... my journey of 200 miles each way will be well worth it! Let’s hope for a good race meeting, with a ‘bit of Northern sun’! Hopefully we will have our final BBQ of the season... my thanks go to Adrian, Raddy and Paul, along with all of the ‘salad preparers’, for all of their work over the year. In my opinion, it has certainly added a welcoming social aspect to the meetings.
We have had a couple of situations this year where the MSA officials have excluded two of our drivers from two separate meetings for two different reasons. Following an amendment to our regulations TR 4.2.3, as proposed by and voted by the Membership, the Committee has had to make difficult decisions as to whether the race points can or cannot be dropped. I’m not alone when I say that the current procedure will have to change for 2015! I’m indicating this now, in probably one of the last newsletters before the AGM {December 7th ~ Chiltern Hotel, Luton. See our website for exact details}.
On the subject of newsletters, I must applaud the efforts of Craig McBeth at love:mini... a very professional newsletter, always full of content and images. It is well worth paying a visit to the love:mini website:
www.love-mini.co.uk to see the coverage that our Club receives. Please make sure that your car has the appropriate decals in place... a very small price to pay for such a great newsletter.
Thinking ahead to our 50th season of racing in 2015, we MUST do something special as far as race meetings are concerned. I have received a few suggestions around the paddock, some of them, dare I say, are great ideas but some of them not likely to happen ~ such as racing at a TOCA round. Colin is currently investigating the chances of racing at the Silverstone Classic. We must always bear in mind the cost of race entry fees of such prestigious events... we will keep you informed. A visit abroad could also be on the cards... if we can cover the costs of buying the grid and collect the deposits of £400 from over 30 drivers by the end of November... we will be going!
AWARDSFinally we have had the Annual Awards evening tickets printed, thanks again to Clearsons Print Management’s such ‘generous’
printing charges! Tickets will be available at Croft from Mike and Alan Jackson. The details are also on the website ~ time, date, venue. As of yet, we have not had any ‘volunteers’ to manage the event, which virtually runs itself. So if anyone wants to lend a hand, in some form or other, please see me at Croft! We are especially looking for someone to prepare the electronic presentation which Jeff Carter did so admirably. For all of you who remember the exciting days of the BTCC in the 1990s, especially the event at Silverstone in 1992, I have contacted Steve Soper, of “The Man’s an animal” fame and also an ex M7RC Club racer. He has agreed to be our guest of honour. So no reasons for not joining us on January 17th... we have even reduced the cost!!!

Twenty-five years ago this month I had a slight dilem-ma, a race at Castle Combe on Saturday 16 September
and getting married on the Sunday 17 September! I thought, ‘Do I tempt fate this early in our married life or
not?’. Well the in-structions from the wife-to-be were; ‘You can race on the Saturday,
but make sure you are at the church by 2:00pm on the Sunday’.
Fortunately despite a mega trip though the infield whilst approaching Avon Rise with Dave Braggins and Paul Stafford, myself and the car made it to the finishing line in 9th place in one piece and I made it to the wedding. Looking back at the results sheet from that day, Steve Cooper won, his sister Tina (also a former champion) has just bought Tristen Knight’s Mini 7, a young Rob Selby came third and
Graham Penn, who is currently building a car for his son to race came fourth. Bill Sollis came 11th but took the fastest lap
and Mike Jackson came 15th a lap down presumably after an off at some stage. The weather conditions were described as ‘Pouring, track very wet’. In the Miglias Phil Harvey came in 17th. There were 25 Sevens and 28 Miglias entered that day.
Now twenty five years later I have the same problem – Wedding Anniversary party on Saturday
20 September starting at 6pm in London and a Mini Seven Race meeting in Croft, Yorkshire 246 miles away.
Well the instructions this time are, ‘OK you can race and you have to be there by 7pm.’ Initially it didn’t look possible but with the possibility of still being able to win the championship (though very slim) I decided I had to go for it. Various
options have been looked at including fixed-wing flights from Newcastle and a helicopter with a direct flight from Croft to London but that was costly and dependant on the weather. So it was not looking good, however thanks to Colin, Ian Watson and Nicola Bush from the BARC they have changed the timetable so that the Mini 7 race is the first race on Saturday afternoon and in theory all over by 2:40pm, therefore giving me 4 hours 20 minutes to tackle the A1, M1 etc. Will it work? Hopefully so, but will let you all know on Sunday morning when I return for the second race either with a Divorce Petition in my hands or a smile on my face.

MINI SE7ENS: RACE 1
Problems in qualifying saw Gareth Hunt and Ashley Davies
not make it to the starting grid even before a wheel had been turned in anger.
It was a great start for Darren Thomas starting from pole, and Graeme Davis quickly moved up to second from fourth with Jabez Dyer taking third, up from fifth. But championship leader Andrew Deviny had a terrible start dropping down to fourth from third. Coming into the first Red Gate corner Kelvin Edgar loses control and ends up in the gravel.
Davis is all over the back of Thomas who is saved by some yellow flags, making Davis back out of his move. Dyer is all on his own in third, with a gap back to Kieren McDonald in fourth, with Leon Wightman in fifth, and Ian Deviny
enjoying a rare moment in front of his brother, Andrew Deviny, who sees himself back in seventh.
Lap three sees a great battle for sixth with Rohith De Silva being chased down by Steve Baker, the Deviny brothers, Shaun Tarlton, Spencer Wanstall and Jim Burrows. Meanwhile Julian Proctor pulls off with a problem.
Into Roberts on lap four sees Davis try again for the lead but he can’t make it stick, and Dyer now is having to defend from both Wightman and McDonald who are squabbling with each other for fifth.
Lap five and everyone is still battling, with Thomas in the lead, Davis second, Dyer third, Wightman fourth, McDonald fifth, A Deviny sixth, De Silva seventh, Baker eighth, I Deviny ninth leading the S Class, followed by Tarlton, Malcolm Keat, Steven Hopper, Wanstall, Steve Trench, David Robinson,
Burrows and Kevin O’Shea behind. Trench then develops some car trouble and pulls off.
Roberts sees action again on lap seven with Baker taking sixth from De Silva who now has Wanstall on his tail.
Wightman has caught Dyer in lap seven but a mistake at Red Gate corner sees him lose his fourth place to McDonald.
The last lap sees Thomas and Davis still fighting over the lead and Dyer, Wightman and McDonald hustling for third fourth and fifth - it is very close for the whole lap. Everyone makes their move at Roberts with a patient Davies picking his moment perfectly, moving out and sprinting to the line to take first, pipping Thomas by just 0.024 seconds. Dyer gets his first-ever podium in third with Wightman in fourth.
Tarlton takes the S Class win with I Deviny second and Burrows third. Thomas takes the fastest lap with a 1.30.474.

MINI MIGLIAS: RACE 1
A wet qualifying sees the cars all mixed up
on this grid with Dan Wheeler on pole, Rob Howard second, James Coulson third, Kane Astin fourth, Niven Burge fifth, Colin Peacock sixth and championship leader Rupert Deeth in seventh.
A great start from Howard sees him lead the race. Starkeys Bridge sees Wheeler retake the lead with Howard following. Astin has made it up to third and is all over Howard’s bootlid. Deeth has made progress too, up to fifth. Gary Warburton has spun-out putting himself a long way back from the pack.
Roberts sees action again in lap two with Astin driving up the inside of Howard to take second, and Coulson is fighting off Deeth for fourth. Le May and Burge fighting
for sixth and seventh. Burge has a hairy moment going straight through the gravel at Craner Curves but manages to get back on the track back in tenth. Meanwhile Wheeler has managed to get himself a bit of breathing space with a gap to the chasing Howard, Astin Coulson and Deeth.
A mistake from Howard at the start of lap three sees him fall back to fifth, moving Astin into second, with Deeth now third and Le May fourth.
Astin has now caught Wheeler but hasn’t got oomph enough to get past him. Deeth is fighting to keep Le May behind who in turn is fighting off Howard.
Coppice Corner sees Wheeler go wide allowing Astin to catch up and put the pressure back on at Roberts but great defending from Wheeler sees him hold his position, but tussle gives Deeth the chance
to catch up leaving Howard leading the following pack of Le May, Peacock, Burge and Coulson.
Roberts once again sees Astin go wide and Deeth shoots past into second place.
Lap eight sees the top three cars nose-to-tail all the way through Red Gate, Hollywood and Craner Curves where Deeth briefly gets the lead but Wheeler fights back and with some great defending through McLeans sees Deeth slot back into second.
The last lap sees all three squabbling for places with each taking their turn to lead but a sprint-finish sees Wheeler take the cross the line first with Astin second and Deeth having to settle for third after a great recovery from a seventh-place start.
Howard was later excluded from the meeting due to contravention of regulations.

MINI SE7ENS: RACE 2
Great start in race two for all the top four cars, with Darren
Thomas leading, Graeme Davies second Andrew Deviny third and Ashley Davis in fourth.
Lap two see Deviny squeeze into second with Davies now having to shut the door on Davis. Steve Trench pulls off for the second race in succession.
Yellow flags come out at the Old Hairpin as Deviny goes in and out of the gravel and back on the track dropping to 18th place. Davis has also had a moment and is now back in 10th. Lap 2 sees Jabez Dyer, who started in fifth place, now finding himself in the lead at McLeans with Thomas second, Leon Wightman third,
and Kieren McDonald fourth. Steven Hopper is another early finisher, pulling off.
Coppice corner sees Thomas make a move but he can’t make it stick, however behind him Davies has managed to take third from Wightman. Steve Baker is also having a great race and has now caught the leading pack from ninth on the grid.
Starkeys Bridge sees Thomas going for the lead but he gets a wheel in the gravel and when they all reappear from the trees it is all change with Davies in the lead, Dyer second and Thomas in third. Another mistake from Thomas in the chicane sees him fall to fifth with Wightman now in third and McDonald fourth.
Davis has managed to get
himself back up to sixth after his mistake earlier on, and Deviny is also back up to 11th.
Lap 7 sees Thomas take second at Roberts and set his sights on front-runner Davies.
The top two are side-by-side at the start of lap eight with Thomas taking the lead. The top four are all over each other through Roberts and the Straight but nobody changes places. Dyer seems to have a problem as he slows at Red Gate and finally pulls off leaving Thomas in the lead.
The last lap sees Davies make a mistake at Roberts allowing Wightman to finish with Thomas first, and Wightman 0.326 sec behind, Davies third.
Andrew Deviny finishes in ninth and took the fastest lap with a 1.29.322

MINI MIGLIAS: RACE 2
It was a great start from the front of the grid with Dan Wheeler into
the lead, ahead of James Coulson, Kane Astin, Niven Burge and Tony Le May, who started in 10th, moves quickly up to 5th.
There is a lot of pushing and shoving all through the first lap but nobody makes anything stick apart from Le May who takes another place, this time fourth from Burge.
Lap 3 sees Rupert Deeth attacking Burge at Coppice corner while Coulson is attacking Wheeler but no places change. Astin is also attacking Coulson but finds himself under pressure from Le May and Burge who all want third.
Lap 4 and into Roberts it looks like Deeth has the better drive but contact between
him and Le May sees Deeth in the barrier and end his race.
Mcleans sees Coulson hold off Astin who cannot get past until the start-finish straight when he comes alongside and slips past. Colin Peacock gets a look-in to sneak past Le May for fourth.
Wheeler has now got a bit of a gap between himself and Coulson who has got second place back and Astin in third. Le May is coming under pressure from returning former champ Paul Thompson who looks up the inside but Le May soon shuts the door.
Astin takes a very wide line into Mcleans but doesn’t have the momentum at Coppice to get past Coulson. Astin tries again at Wheatcroft straight and gets past Coulson on lap 7 - soon setting his sights on Wheeler, but can’t get past.
Astin tries all he can to
get past the leader, his best chance comes on lap 8 at Coppice corner but he forgets all about Coulson who puts in a fantastic move to cut inside and take second leaving Astin cursing his luck in third place.
But it’s not over yet. Coulson runs wide at Redgate giving Astin the chance to retake second place at Craner corner.
The last lap sees Astin and Coulson swap places back and forth but the race finishes with Wheeler in first, Astin second 0.381 sec behind, and Coulson third 0.694 sec behind that, Rupert Deeth again took the fastest lap with a 1.22.123 sec time, but that will be no consolation for not-finishing and will inevitably affect the leaderboard cutting down his championship points lead heading into the final rounds.

One of three double-header meetings that season, the weekend of
22-23 August counted towards rounds 7 and 8 of the 10-round Dunlop-backed Challenge, also celebrating 50 years of the Mini, and with four 10-lappers on the modern day 2.125-mile circuit.
A 19-car entry assembled in the 1300cc Mini Miglia section, with victory in race one on the Saturday going to the Club’s current Commercial Manager, Colin Peacock, less than a second ahead of Paul Thompson and setting fastest lap as he does so, with Mark Sims completing the podium. Champion-elect Andy Hack takes fourth after starting
from pole, with Sarah Munns and Paul Brown next up. Also in the field are Rob Howard, Paul Simmonds, Aaron Smith, Dan Wheeler and Phil Harvey. For race two on the Sunday, the same top five are shuffled into the finishing order of: Hack, who races from pole slot again to his seventh-of-eight victories for the season, from Thompson, Peacock, Sims (fastest lap) and Munns, with this time Gordon Peacock in sixth place.
In the 1000cc Mini Se7ens, there are 20 cars present, with Champion-elect Kane Astin sitting on pole for both races. It all goes wrong for him in the opener, eventually disqualified
for a black/orange flag misdemeanour, leaving victory to Max Hunter, a few lengths clear of Ian Deviny (fastest lap) from Paul Spark. Completing the top six are Andrew Deviny, Ricky Horne and Nathan Burge, while also among the finishers are Graeme Davis, Malcom Keat, Julian Proctor and Kevin O’Shea, with Darren Thomas, Niven Burge and James Coulson on the DNF list. Race two sees Hunter again first to the chequer, this time ahead of Astin, from fastest lap-setting Burge Senior (Niven), Deviny (Ian), Spark and Horne. Julian Affleck takes his second S-Class win of the weekend too.

It was ’40 Years of the Mini’ in 1999, a season in which the M7RC gained
massive publicity and raised lots of money for charity by building a Mini Se7en in a weekend to give away as a competition prize. That year’s Challenge was sponsored by Unipart-DCM, with continuing support from both the BRDC and the Mini Competitions Department, and the trip to Croft over the 4-5 September weekend was round 11-of-13 on the calendar, of which the best 10 scores counted. It was also the Club’s first to Croft (a former RAF base) since its major revamp in the mid-1990s, having only been used for occasional rallycross events since 1981.
The 1-litre Mini Se7ens drew a terrific entry of 20
cars, with Champion-elect Dave Braggins sitting on pole after qualifying, alongside Mark Hunt. Their positions were swapped at the end of 10 laps, Hunt over three seconds to the good helped by the fastest lap of the race, and the top six unusually strung out, comprising Dave Banwell in third from Paul Thompson, Niven Burge and Jason Porter, with Mark Sims the only other competitor still registered 15 years later. It was a case of “where have all the Miglias gone?”, as only 10 cars ventured up to North Yorkshire when there were generally 20+ elsewhere. Nonetheless, a good
10-lap show was put on for the spectators, with reigning Miglia Champ Ian Curley starting from pole position and narrowly getting the verdict over the ‘young 50-something’ Peter Baldwin, the same finishing order reflected in the title outcome. The late Steve Bell (’97 Se7en Champion) shadowed them both to take third, with Phil Manser (’96 Se7en Champ’) setting fastest lap and just holding off Julian Sole for fourth. The late Tony Higgins, along with Colin Ellison completed the finishers, with Matt Hayman (’98 Se7en Champ’) and current newsletter reporter, Mark Chandler as DNFs. Yorkshireman Jonathan Lewis failed to make the grid.

This was the Club’s last visit to Croft Autodrome in its earlier 1.75-mile layout
before it endured a long layoff from circuit racing. Back then, the M7RC paid two visits as part of the Austin-Morris Mini Challenge calendar, the fourth season since the Leyland group came in with huge promotional backing and which had also introduced a third race series for the 1275 GT flagship Mini. Sunday 10 June saw a race for National Mini 1000s – the first time the ‘Miglia’ category had visited these parts - and the Nottinghamshire Sports
Car Club attracted, by today’s standards, a decent 19 entries for round 6 of 16, but by far the lowest National entry of the season. Nonetheless, the race was an entertaining one, with reigning Champion Phil Spurling in the Denis Gregory-run car eventually taking the honours in the 12-lapper, a mere 0.6 secs ahead of poleman Richard Belcher. The following season’s Champion, Roland Nix was another half-a-second behind in his Steve Harris-tuned car, also setting a new lap record, with Martin Guidery (Magdun Mini)
and Derek May (Swiftune) completing the top six.
The Mini 850s (née Se7ens) got their turn later on in the year, on Sunday 9 September for round 14 of their 16-round National Challenge. This time the hosting club was the BRSCC Northern Centre, but the 10-lap race was combined with several quicker Mod
Sports as only 10 of the 12 Mini 850s entered made the start. Chris Tyrrell led from pole but was soon passed by Patrick Watts, who would also go on to take the title before making an even bigger name for himself in Touring Cars. Both shared a new fastest lap, while behind, Gary Hall took a strong third a little way ahead of the battle of the race between Nigel ‘Boot’ Gaymer (Boopspeed Mini) and Russell Grady, with John Williams edging out Jonathan Lewis for sixth place, and all 10 starters finished.

Four decades ago just the 850cc Minis Se7ens went to Croft, in fact for the opening
round of their 15-round National championship, a Spring Race meeting hosted by the Yorskhire Centre of the BARC.
Thirteen of the 17 entries appeared, although Champion that year, Chris Tyrrell wasn’t among them. However, runner-up to Tyrrell, Hugo Hoyle certainly did make the trip North and came away
with the maximum 10 points after 8 laps of the 1.75-mile track. His winning margin of 0.2 secs was quite the norm’ for back then, ’72 Champ Reg Armstrong having to settle for second although he did set a new fastest lap of 1:29.6, at an average of 70.31 mph. In third, several lengths behind was Chris Maries, later to become a leading TVR racer, while the battle for fourth saw Jim Mancey (Jimini), Andrew Higton and the Team
Castrol car of polesitter Alan Corbishley finish barely inches apart. Back in 10th place, one Norman Finn, whose name now entitles the Most Pole Positions trophy in Mini Se7en. Interestingly, in the next couple of seasons, Croft would see regular visits from the Northern-based section of the M7C, with the likes of Phil Hepworth, Ian Mittell, Colin Hesford, Paul Ratcliffe and Chris Hill regulars in a Northern Mini 7 series.

The 2012 season got off to a great start with two action packed races in the spring sunshine at Oulton Park in Chesh-ire. A large crowd was treated to two typically Mini 10 lap encounters with ac-
tion all the way from start to finish.
In the Mini Se7ens, reigning champion Paul Spark crossed the line to take the first chequered flag of the year. In the Miglia en-
counter 2010 Cham-pion Paul Thompson took pole position and then led from start to finish to claim his first victory since Spa last year.

ENTRIES OPEN FOR COMBE The entry form for the Motors TV event at Castle Combe on Monday 7 May is now available and it is requested that all racing members in-tending to partici-pate get their entries in as soon as possible.
The Mini 7 Racing Club has bought the grid and we need to know the numbers as
soon as possible. We also need to make sure the TV commentators have an accurate entry list ahead of the event so driver pro-files can be pre-pared. Remember this is LIVE TV!

download the entry form from the web-site and pay Mike Jackson at Doning-ton Park next week-end. You can pay right up to the event on the 7 May but we request that you don’t leave it to the last minute.
It is going to be a great event and its going to be on TV.
FLYING START TO 2013
It’s been business as usual for the Mini
Se7en Racing Club as this year’s
championships got off to a roaring
start. With Round 1 at Donington and
Round 2 & 3 at Rockingham under
our belts the season has well and truly
begun, and brought with it all the
hard fought sideways action we ex-
pect. As of Round 3 it’s
Paul Spark in the lead of the Se7ens,
having won at Donny and placed
strongly in both Rockingham races.
It’s a strong statement from the three-
time champion, who will be looking
to put early points on the board in
pursuit of his fourth consecutive title.
In the Miglias it’s been an all Kane
Astin affair so far; three victories from
three outings leave him very much in
control. But good performances from
Aaron Smith and Tristen Knight show
that he’s got a long way to go to se-
cure the championship, and of
course you can never discount the
experience of 6-time winner Peter
Baldwin. 2013 has also brought with it a few
changes in the way that
M7RC communi-
cate with fans and teams, starting off

DOUBLE CIrCUIT aCTION aT BraNDs aND OULTON mINIfEsTs
Track fans are being served up a double treat this year. To mark the Mini’s 55th anniversary, track owners MSV are
expanding their popular Mini Festival event to two events at two different tracks.
Brands Hatch in Kent, will play host to the first Festival on May 11, with Mini drivers offered free entry if they book through the website.
The larger event of the two will take place at Cheshire’s Oulton Park circuit where there promises to be lots of entertainment to enjoy both on and off the track.
