DYC SERVICES
FROM THE COMMODORECOM. A.J. TELMOS, MD
Fellow DYC Members, The DYC is about to become a 12-month-a-year Club, thanks to the ingenuity of our manage-
ment, the accounting of our CFO Marty Agnello, and the support of the Board. The StarboardHaven Lounge will be open January through March from 11:30 am until midnight with anenhanced menu of our most popular items. Please support this new initiative by using your Club.Details on the menu and seating in the lounge will follow.
Thank you to all members who participated in the Maumee Bay and Sarnia Rendezvous. Kudos to Art and Joann Leo for a job well done at Maumee Bay. Art's fish fry and Tony Paccoswere the favorites of the adults. The kids favored the pool, bike riding, the nature trial and thetwo-story water slide. John and Ramona Hundt organized a great rendezvous in Sarnia. Thecasino and race track were great hits. The presentation of the horse blanket to the winning horseafter the DYC-sponsored 8th race was a special touch orchestrated by John. Photos to follow.
DYC's next rendezvous is Frost Bite at Metro Beach. Beginning Thursday, October 6th andgoing through Sunday, October 9th. Frost Bite is always one of the best and with the best atten-dance. Again this year space is limited, so sign up now. Do not forget your costumes and treatsfor the little ghosts and goblins.
The Annual Meeting is Monday, November 14th. Please come to the Club, support your candidates, voice your opinion on theissues, be updated on your Club's progress during 2011, hear first hand who earned special awards and the skinny on the 2012budget.
As I stated in my last newsletter, the members have donated sufficient funds to complete the East End Picnic area. I am hon-ored to report that Dead End Dock, winners of the Venetian Trophy, have agreed to commit the monies raised to another of myprojects - placing the DYC signage back on the historic Detroit Yacht Club. A deal has been made with Scott Gardner of GardnerSign Company (the company who did the signage for the palace and MGM Grand, thanks to member Sam Cerrito) to completethe signage in LED lights and mount the sign for monies in hand. This signage project required no donations from the membershipand no cost to the Club. Both of these projects should be completed this Fall. My final dream is to air condition the Bitter End, sothat it becomes a more functional room for the membership and will be available when we host the swim finals. Please supportDirector Leo in his endeavors to make this happen.
"REMEMBER, WE ARE NOT HERE FOR A LONG TIME ONLY A GOOD TIME"See you at the DYC. Commodore A.J. Telmos MD
FROM THE BOARDWALK TO THE BOARDROOMBY SECRETARY FRED CARR
Official results of the 2011 Nominating Committee havebeen posted on the bulletin board located across from theDYC Boutique. The next important date to remember isOctober 15th, the last day to request an absentee ballot. Thisrequest can be made via email to our office manager NancyFournier [email protected]
The Finance Committee presented the FY 2012 budgetwhich was approved. We are sure you'll be pleased as thisbudget includes extended operations so come on down tothe Club and enjoy. To enhance that enjoyment the Boardhas corrected a House Rule regarding the dress code and isconsidering enhancing House Rules covering language.
Speaking of language the board approved the design, ver-biage and purchase of our Historic Designation signage. Wealso approved the agreement between the Detroit YachtClub and the Detroit Yacht Club Foundation which was a critical component in the foun-dation's IRS exemption application. In keeping with history we also approved the agree-ment between the DRRA and the DYC which formalizes our Gold Cup Sponsor relation-ship well into the future.
Other topics of discussion that warrant mentioning are the usage of the recently creat-ed dock fund and the Ladies Locker Room renovation project, both subjects require spe-cial meetings which are to take place this month.
Comments, questions and concerns, contact your Board of Directors [email protected]
And that's the way it was from the Boardroom last month.

SARNIA RENDEZVOUSWritten by Jim Kilarski
The Sarnia Rendezvous on September 9th was a wonderful visit with our friends in Canada and as usual a first class event. Attending DYC members were welcomed with warm hospitality on Friday evening by the staff of Sarnia Bay Marina. In addi-
tion, John & Ramona arranged for a bag piper to entertain us on the docks as we slipped into happy hour. Each member receiveda little gift bag from the Hundt’s filled with everything to ensure a great weekend.
We enjoyed great weather for the entire weekend while the Detroit area was getting rain. Dock hands at the marina were mostappreciative of our visit and the marina treated DYC members to a private cocktail party on Saturday afternoon prior to our depar-ture to Hiawatha Race Track where we took in an evening of betting on the horses and dining. To top it off, John & Ramona hadarranged for us to sponsor the 8th race, joining the winning jockey at the finish line. We awarded the horse, driver and owner witha beautiful DYC horse blanket, painstakingly monogrammed by our own Lauren. A group photo was taken with the winning horse.
Once again, a most enjoyable trip successfully arranged by John & Ramona Hundt and we all look forward to his plans for nextyear.

This year the House Committee focused on repairs, cost reduction and cosmetic improve-ments to both the exterior and interior of the Club. During the winter months insulation and a newceiling were installed in the maintenance building. The monthly cost savings for heating hasbeen quite substantial allowing us to get a full return on our investment in a matter of a fewmonths. Other projects included painting the Grill and Starboard Haven and transforming thecandy counter into the new Boatique. During the warmer months the House Committee,Maintenance Department and Assistant General Manager, Bill Bowman concentrated on repair-ing, painting and improving the exterior of the clubhouse and the grounds. The results of theseefforts are very noticeable, and we frequently hear favorable comments from our membershipand guests to that regard. Although you can't physically see it, one of our best and most impor-tant accomplishments this season was to get five of the flat, very leaky, roofs on the Clubhousereplaced. This year the House Committee and Maintenance Department tracked everything thatwas fixed or improved, and the list is quite extensive. What was accomplished between JeffMichels and his crew, Bill Bowman and his staff with the limited resources available is prettyimpressive.
Ladies Locker Room Update: There is finally some new momentum to improve this area ofthe Clubhouse. Plans include the repair of some very old, pool plumbing leaks. As most women who use the locker room know alltoo well, this part of our Clubhouse is long overdue for improvement. The incoming Vice Commodore, Scott Allen and I, are in syncon this renovation effort. We are working together with the First Ladies, the Decorating Committee, management, maintenance andseveral outside contractors to finalize costs and prioritize projects. We are currently obtaining plumbing repair quotes to properlyfix the indoor pool plumbing leaks before we begin any other improvements.
Upgrade ideas being considered for the ladies locker room renovation project are: repair of pool plumbing leaks, paint, light-ing, partial new carpet, replacement of ceiling tiles, shower tiles and plumbing hardware, and a new large vanity with a granite coun-tertop. Some project funding is already in place, thanks in part to the First Ladies, various fund raising efforts and member dona-tions for materials and labor. Several items and subjects still need to be discussed and addressed, but the idea seems to be tak-ing hold and moving forward. The goal is to have several of these projects presented to the House Committee in the next monthor so. We expect to have funding in place and clearly defined plans for house and board approval. We look forward to moving for-ward with these plans.
Sincerely,Bryan Barlow, Vice Commodore

THE HISTORIC DETROIT YACHT CLUBHOSTS AND SPONSORS DETROIT
THEMED COOKING SHOW"Detroit Over Easy" to Feature DYC Executive Chefs/Detroit Talent/Cooking Contest
It started with an idea and a simple question. This past February, our DYC General Manager Paul Hughes asked Producer John P.Lauri "Could we produce a cooking show here?" After months of planning, the first episode of our Detroit-focused cooking program titledDetroit Over Easy is in production at the DYC.
The show is hosted by DYC Executive Chefs Ken Dixon and Paul Hughes and focuses on healthy food, easy preparation, great wines and live music performed by a variety of Detroit bands. Detroit Over Easyalso includes the inspiring advice of celebrity Helen Phillips, winner of NBC's "Biggest Loser," renownednutritionist Dr. Tom Rifai of St. Joseph Mercy Oakland and cardiologist Michael Dangovian. Together theywill all show Detroiters simple and practical ways to become healthier through better choices of food.
Filmed at the Detroit Yacht Club, Detroit Over Easy features scripts by award winning screenwriter MikeN. Kelly, the guidance of Emmy-Award winner Scott Allman and is produced by Belle Isle-based J. LauriFilmworks. The show's original theme song was composed and recorded by Joey Bowen who appears inthe Starboard Haven Lounge at the Club on a regular basis.
Detroit Over Easy showcases Michigan products from local farms, markets and retailers," said Hughes. "Our show is about enjoyingthe best of what Michigan has to offer without spending a fortune. This is also the Detroit Yacht Club's way of giving back to the commu-nity that has supported us for nearly 150 years."
Director and cinematographer John P. Lauri is utilizing Technicolor CineStyle™ digital film technology featuring 35mm high definition sensors, specialized lenses and microphones to provide a superior visual and audio experience.
"Our techniques produce stunning visuals, which will really showcase great Michigan locations, food producers, retailers and the healthymeals our chefs prepare." Lauri is producing the show for television, social media, in-store display and mobile devices.
Detroit Over Easy will be hosting a cooking contest on Belle Isle on October 15th for budding area chefs. The criteria for judgingwill be food with a great taste but with a reasonable control of calories, sodium and fat. Soon after, the top four chefs will be invited to theDYC for a final awards competition. Both events will be become part of a Detroit Over Easy episode. "I want to inspire our community toeat better and learn the joy of cooking," said Chef Dixon.
Gleaners Community Food Bank is the show's charitable partner and will benefit from special donations made by those who desire tojoin the show's audience during the filming of Detroit Over Easy. "We are thrilled that Gleaners was chosen as Detroit Over Easy's char-itable partner," said W. DeWayne Wells, Gleaners Community Food Bank president. "The preview is testimony to the amazing talentinvolved. Having an entertaining show focused on healthy food is exciting."
DYC Commodore A.J. Telmos stated "We welcome creativity from the shores of this 143 year oldlandmark. Paul, Ken, Mike and John are encouraging community participation and we value that atDYC." All members of the Club are invited to participate in front of the camera or as a member of theDetroit Over Easy production crew.

DYC FOUNDATIONMARK LIFTER
Preparatory work is continuing onthe launch of the Detroit Yacht ClubFoundation (DYCF). This work hasbeen focused in two areas. First, theDYCF Board of Trustees, with sub-stantial assistance from Greg Nowak, readied our detailed application to theIRS for recognition as an exempt501(c)(3) organization that will be able to accept tax-deductible contri-butions. We submitted the application on September 29th in a well-structured and complete form that increases the prospect of obtainingexpedited approval. While we can't be sure how long this will take,we're hoping for a positive result early next year. Second, our AdvisoryBoard members, Trustees, DYC liaisons and other member volunteershave been meeting as committees to develop recommendations forkey strategies and policies for an effective Foundation. This will allowthe DYCF to begin operations quickly once IRS approval is obtained.
Raising funds via member contributions, grant applications, and taxcredits to help with the maintenance, repair, restoration and preserva-tion of our historic, nearly 90-year-old clubhouse is a core purpose ofthe DYCF. Our classically beautiful Clubhouse is a treasure not onlyfor us as members, but also for the city and region. Buildings of thesize, scope and age of our Clubhouse inevitably require considerableattention and financial resources for their exterior, interior, equipmentand less-visible infrastructure. The DYC clubhouse is no exception;we have a long list of current and anticipated needs. While our capi-tal assessment and preservation funds are designed to help with theseneeds, the Foundation will provide another avenue for funding throughtax-advantaged gifts and bequests.
Our four committees have met several times already. At a meetingof the Foundation Advisory Board a few weeks ago, the committeesreported on their progress and planned next steps. Thanks are due toall Advisory Board members, Trustees and volunteers. Members ofeach committee are listed below, some of whom are doing double dutyon two committees.
*New VolunteerIf you would like to help with one of the Foundation committees or
have other questions, please contact me [email protected], any of the Trustees or Advisory Boardmembers, or the Club office.
