Vyasar Street residents appeal for garbage bin

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, I am a long-time resident of Vyasar Street, T. Nagar. A damagedbgarbage bin was removed from the street 6 months back but has notbeen replaced. Many residents are dumping daily household waste andother garbage on the road margin.

Corporation officials have not acted on our requests to keep a garbagebin at a suitable location on the street.

The unhygienic condition of the street is hazardous to the residents. The other hazard is the damaged EB junction box next to the entrance

of my house.I appeal to Corporation officials to clear the garbage from the street

and place a bin, and to EB officials to repair the damaged junction box.Mukunth

Be wary when giving PAN/Aadhaar copiesSir, The other day I got a call from my banker asking me to furnish

copies of my PAN card/Aadhar card to update the Know Your Customer(KYV) details. I told the official that I had completed the KYC formalitieslong back, but was not averse to providing the copies of my PAN/Aadhar again, provided I was given an acknowledgement. The officialthen changed tack and told me that I do not have to furnish the copiesand cut the call.

In view of the high possibility of these cards being misused, one mustexercise extreme caution while submitting the copies. These cannot begiven just like that and when one submits the copies of these cards, he/she should obtain acknowledgement.

Further, each time one submits the copies of PAN /Aadhaar, theseshould be endorsed giving details of the purpose for which they aregiven. Even if the KYC procedure is to be reviewed every two/threeyears, one does not have to furnish details if there are no changes. B.Kannan, Secretary, T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association,30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar

Smart card for paying taxes unnecessarySir, The Chennai Corporation, in association with ICICI Bank, will

soon launch a Smart Utility Card for payment of property tax, watertax, EB bill and other bills.

The Point-of-Sale (POS) machines, where these cards can be swiped, will be set up in E-Seva centers. As an incentive to use the smart card, the Corporation will offer discounts/bonus points on payments.

One does not understand why Chennai Corporation is introducinganother payment card, when almost everyone nowadays has debitcard/credit card/mobile payment and other digital payment options.

In the case of the proposed smart card, to get it re-charged for payingthe taxes, one has to go in search of E-Seva centers which, being govt.run, will be open only during the working hours.

When E-Seva centers are already offering other payment services, what is the point in burdening them further with smart cards?

Instead, the Corporation should concentrate on providing bettercivic amenities as a first step towards a ‘Smart City’ instead ofintroducing ‘Smart Card’. V. S. Jayaraman, 31. Motilal Street, T.Nagar

Stray dog problem inLake View Road

Sir, have been a resident of Lake View Roadfor the past 10 years. It is one of the busy roadsas it connects to two schools and a hospital.

Of late, there has been an increase in thenumber of stray dogs in the road. They canmainly be found near ThulukanathammanTemple, opposite GVS Physiotherapy Center. They roam in packs, frightening the public, especially during night and early morning. Theyoften squat in groups on pavements therebyblocking the way for pedestrians. Theirincessant barking at night disturbs the sleep.

They also often chase students who ride toschool on bicycles. A couple of days back, a boyfell down from his cycle after he was chased bya couple of dogs.

I appeal to Chennai Corporation officials tocapture the stray dogs and relocate them.Muthukrishnan Chandrasekaran

Ex-MLA rewards guard for savingyouth

Plea for footwear counter in KasiViswanathar temple

Sir, Theft of footwear has become commonoutside Sri Kasi Viswanathar Koil, WestMambalam.

Since there is no secure counter for leavingfootwear outside the temple, devotees are forcedto leave it near the entrance, and it often getsstolen. I myself have lost a few pairs whilevisiting the temple.

I appeal to the temple administration to setup a footwear counter outside the temple forthe benefit of the devotees. Ram, WestMambalam

By Our Staff ReporterWhen most of their classmates and friends were studying at

Indhrani also fared well by scoring 1106 marks.According to their teachers, both have been consistent

performers in academics. While Mahalakshmi also plays chess and is a long-jumper,

Indrani likes to read books and is also an avid singer.

NO HOLDS BARREDFLIGHTS AHOYBy M A Sadanand

It was a couple of months ago when daughter Neethiphoned up saying that she and her husband were flying toKochi to see her ailing aunt, 90, who was allegedly booked forthe journey to heaven.

How sad that a life lived on the fringe is allegedly taperingoff! One good democratic thing is that we all end up pronesomeday. My son and wife were also Kochi-bound on thesame morning to see the same aunt. I hoped the quarto wouldreach safely.

I have no faith in these flying machines. Unlikeable likemath, these machines give my guts a twitch. It’s like flyingin a tin can several thousand miles up in the sky.

When people are leaving for the airport, I don’t even get upfront to wave and say “Wish you a smooth flight” becauseI believe there is no such thing. Imagine my having to saythe same thing when Monisha, my daughter-in-law, willleave shortly for US with her uncle and aunt for a two-monthholiday in That country talking a much longer flight to theother end of the world. She went through the interview at theUS Consulate in Chennai and got the visa in a jiffy. Lookslike things move very fast in the USA! If you move fast, youwant to move faster. What spells the craze for speed inhumans? I think it’s all in the mind.

Sitting surrounded by snow on a mountain-top, one is withnature and one’s thoughts are ensconced within the self. Youneed not go anywhere else to absorb the adhered calm thatis within you. That is what our saints have been showing usfor the last several centuries. We don’t listen to the still voiceof wisdom, our Swamis are silent in order to let men discoverthe truth that one need not travel great distances in orderto attain moksha. My mind would feel calmer in the 38-degree balmy climate of Chennai than when I am shiveringin the negative-9-degrees anywhere else in the world.

I vote for Chennai, not any flashy foreign city even if it israining gold there!
