NO HOLDS BARREDBy M. A. SADANAND

Half the trouble generated for the 10 to 5 time-filler forthe welfare of the inscrutable owner of the globe, variouslylabelled as God, Bhagavan, Allah et al, is preventable ifGod, once every ten hours or more, wakes up from hisKumbhakarna siestas.

The shouting supplicators for the hidden inexhaustibleriches must have taken the matrimonial oath “Yes, wewill”, when the good old God and Wife made the couple signon the dotted line which, in the course of a few days, beingwritten in self-deleting ink, got deleted. The honeymooningcouple were advised by crooked lawyers that, since theSchedule did not contain the items and actually there isno evidence of the acceptance of the liability to protect agood man like M. A. Sadanand who had tumbled into thesnakepit of the legal profession, God, his Wife and thearmy of legal manipulators were not bound by the mani-festation of the Royal couple’s rantings, which if any, gotself-deleted thanks to a pot of vanishing ink.

The creators of the new profession of deceit throughcenturies of promoting, faking and legal wild goose chas-ing, after millions of ignoramus make law in law factories, throve all over the world and called themselves “Learned”,the coping stone in the build up. There were great men -not merely brainy or vocabulary wise, but inherentlyhonest. All good things, bad things and forgettable things, people and incidents must end. Democracy has blessedmany a forgettable fellows who, without political benedic-tion, would have, at best, risen to the position of a lawyer’sclerk.

God got chest pain laughing non-stop for hours becauseone chap stuck like a leach to a politician and was sufferedto be one of the bunch of Government Pleaders when I wasthe chief G.P. After I was guillotined one fine night, hejumped up. Then, after many ropes were shredded, thisgreat jurist was upped as a judge. I had a small CivilRevision Petition before him that could have been dis-posed of in 5 minutes but, after 15 adjournments, not atmy instance, I asked him to verify a date from his papersas my print was smudged. He said, “Don’t put to mequestions “. It took me 40 years to learn that lesson.

After another adjournment, the case came up beforeJustice Prabha Sridevan and it was allowed in 5 minutes.Justicing is like the I.P.L or the Wimbledon or a Testwithout Harper.

If anythinginteresting

is happening inyour neighbourhood

please informMambalam Times.

If those of you who havenever possessed an Applecomputer or an iPod or aniPhone or an iPad were be-wildered by the countlessnewspaper columns of en-comia paid to Steve Jobsafter his demise on Wednes-day and thought that hehad played no role in yourlives, you are wrong!

But for Steve Job’s earlyinvention Apple Macintosh, this newspaper MambalamTimes which you have beenreading regularly for over16 years, would not evenhave been born!

Till the advent of AppleMacintosh in 1986 - to-gether with the now-ubiqui-tous mouse, AppleLaserWriter and the soft-ware packages Mac-writeand Aldus PageMaker -anyone who wished to pub-lish a newspaper had to nec-essarily own a printingpress with a manual com-posing room. The invest-ment in such an elaborateinfrastructure would havebeen totally non-viable fora weekly tabloid newspa-per of 8 to 16 pages andthere would, therefore, havebeen no Mambalam Times!

It was Apple Macintoshthat proved to be the gamechanger! In it one could com-pose news stories, editthem, give them headlines, incorporate photographsand place them on a pageexactly like they would lookon the final printed copy. Aprint-out of the page couldthen be taken from theApple LaserWriter, whichused the technology then

Steve Jobs who made Mambalam Times possible!

known as WYSIWYG - WhatYou See Is What You Get! Thisprinted page could later be sentto a printing press, howeverfar it may be, for the replica-tion of thousands of copies ofthe newspaper for subsequentdistribution.

The IBM PC, the alternativedesktop computer of thosedays, did not have any of thesecapabilities. It had no facilityfor page make-up, and the out-put could only be from a dot-matrix printer which was unfitfor further processing for theproduction of a printed news-paper.

Giving directions to the IBM

PC, using what was known asMicrosoft Disk Operating Sys-tem (MS DOS), was quite anightmare. For example, tocopy a file from the hard driveto a floppy drive, one had totype each letter of the elabo-rate command “copy c:\docs\myfolder\filename a:\”. Forrenaming a file, the commandwas ‘ren c:\docs\myfolder\filename.old filename.new”,and for deleting a file, it was “delc:\docs\myfolder\ filename”.

The mouse that came withApple Macintosh convertedthese tasks into child’s play. Each file you created wouldbe represented by a picture

(which Steve Jobs called‘icon’) on the computerscreen and, to delete it, youhad only to point themouse’s arrow on that iconand drag it to another iconrepresenting the trash box.To copy a file from a harddrive to a floppy drive, youhad to merely drag that file’sicon from the hard drive iconto the floppy drive icon. Thisprocess, which is incorpo-rated in all computer soft-ware today, was revolution-ary in 1986, and it wasSteve Jobs who introducedthat user-friendly step andnamed it as ‘graphic inter-face’.

I was one of the earliestusers of Apple Macintoshin India, having bought onealmost as soon as it waslaunched in USA. Its speci-fications were quite rudi-mentary (Monochrome, with only 1MB RAM and20MB hard disc) with a pricethat was quite prohibitiveat 2900 US dollars! TheLaserWriter cost anotherwhopping $3200. But Ineeded the system forAmerican Education Aids, the educational institutionI was running then.

Steve Job’s guiding prin-ciple in life was ‘To think dif-ferently’ and I too adopted itwhile deciding to experimentwith the publication of aneighbourhood newspaperusing the infrastructurecreated by him.

And the rest is history! So, let me also, on behalf

of the readers of this news-paper, add my humble sa-lute to that genius SteveJobs!
