LAST TIME OUTwiener’s huge day leads football over rival sewanee

MEMPHIS - For the fourth straight season, the Rhodes College football team will be hanging on to the Orgill Trophy as they defeated the University of the South, 28-10, behind an eight catch, 188-yard, three touchdown day from senior Jonathan Wiener.

The Rhodes defense was also excellent on the day, limiting Sewanee to 279 yards of total offense with most of it coming towards the end of the game.

After a three-and-out from the Tigers, Rhodes, led by senior Blake Box who returned from the first time since week 2 against Pomona-Pitzer, led the Lynx on a 16-play, 80-yard drive ending in a seven yard score from junior Roc Sherrell. Box was excellent, going 6-for-10 on the drive for 56 yards.

Sewanee again was set back by the Rhodes defense and the Lynx offense was moving again, this time moving seven plays in 62 yards. However, the drive would stall as Rhodes would go for it on 4th-and-goal from the 11 and fail to convert and junior Brandon Box was just out of bounds.

Moving into the second quarter, Sewanee was able to move close to midfield, but again Rhodes was able to hold, forcing the third punt of the game.

The two teams would exchange punts on the next two possessions as Rhodes would take over again midway through the seconds quarter. Again, the lynx were on the move thanks to the arm of Box, moving inside the five.

However, again, the Sewanee defense would hold, forcing another turnover on downs despite the 12 play drive from Rhodes. The Lynx go the ball back before the break, but a sack of Box ended the half and he would not return.

Junior Austin Henyon would assume the role at quarterback to start the second half and he led it off with a bang, going 10-plays, 67-yards and finish it off with a 34 yard strike to Wiener for six.

On the next possession, the Rhodes defense would force a turnover in Sewanee ter-ritory, but the Lynx offense could not do anything with the possession, turning it back over on downs to the Tigers.

Sewanee would respond with a 10-play drive of their own, going 59 yards down the

field and getting a 32 yard field goal from Callum Wishart to make it a 14-3 game.

Rhodes had an answer as Henyon led the team back down, eating up 67 yards in seven plays and capping the drive with a 23-yard strike to Wiener, his second score, to move the game out to 21-3.

Sewanee moved into the fourth quarter and decided to go for it on fourth and one at their own 24. The Lynx would stuff the quarterback sneak to force the turnover on downs and give Rhodes great field position.

It took no time for Rhodes to strike as on the first play of the drive, Henyon found Wiener for the third time in the half from 23 yards out to put the game out of reach at 28-3.

Sewanee would score with less than five minutes remaining and attempt an onside kick that was recovered by Rhodes who eventually ran out the clock for the win.

It’s 40th win in the rivalry, bringing the All-Time Series to 41-40-3 in favor of Sewanee and it is the Lynx 33rd time winning the Orgill Cup including the fourth consecutive. They lead the Orgill Cup series, 33-28-1.

Box finished 16-for-27 for 251 yards while Henyon was 7-for-11 for 119 yards and three scores. Sherrell had a tough day on the ground, rushing for 25 yards on 12 carries. Wiener had his huge day, but Box added 104 yards on six catches while senior Matt Baldwin finished with five catches for 54 yards.

Defensively, senior Trey Hooper had a huge day in limiting Sewanee’s option attack, leading the way with 12 tackles and three tackles for loss. Meanwhile, senior Wyatt McRae added six tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss while junior Matt Nungesser and freshman Eric Monroe each had five tackles. Nungesser and junior Henry Weinreich each had a fumble recovery on the afternoon.

Rhodes moves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in SAA play and have now won 13 straight home games at Crain Field. They will return to action next Saturday as they head to St Louis, Mo. to battle Washington University in St. Louis. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
