PROPWASH & BACKBLAST
by Mike Melendy
Enter February, maybe a hint of Spring for a little tease? The
groundhog is back in his hole and I’m down in the basement
covering a Howell twin, though you won’t recognize it as such
when I’m done. Hopefully you’re utilizing this forced hibernation
profitably. No sense sitting around doing nothing! Props to
balance, upgrades to planes and equipment. Before you know it,
it will be flying time again…(maybe).
On a different track, I’m pleased to announce that we have two
new Field Marshalls, John Haderly and Jim Kaufman. They will
oversee the field conditions and maintenance, though it is all our
jobs to assist and keep the area neat and tidy.
The club is re-chartered with the AMA and we have a new contact
person for our not-for-profit corporation.
As for current business, we have our Winter Banquet on the 23rd
of this month. Get those reservations in no later than the 17th.
There will be a few raffle prizes for the ladies and gentlemen (not
you Cliff!), plus the Atta Boy awards and a few new models.
See you at the February
meeting.
PS. We need a minutes
taker for the next two
meetings, February and
March as Murry is on
“Official Leave”. The pay is
great!

THE ANSWER TO JANUARY’S ‘NAME THAT PLANE’
The name of the plane is the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt.
Mike Melendy was the first person to guess it correctly and
will get a free raffle ticket at the February meeting. Bob
Wisinski & Bill Grove also guessed correctly. This aircraft
was produced in greater numbers than any other American
fighter in WWII. A large, heavy single-seater proved effective in
both air-to-air combat and as a ground-attack aircraft. One of
America’s top aces was flying one of these when he recorded
his 28th kill.
FEBRUARY’S ‘NAME THAT PLANE’
This aircraft developed in the United States to participate in the 1920 Gordon Bennett Cup air race. Advanced
for its day, the aircraft was a high-wing monoplane with a monocoque fuselage and cantilever wing (built of
solid balsa wood covered in plywood and linen and that incorporated a Grant designed mechanism to vary its
camber in flight by moving the leading edge and trailing edge. The aircraft also featured a retractable
undercarriage operated by a hand-crank making it one of the first instances of undercarriage retraction for
aerodynamic benefit alone.
Send all responses to Bradford Walters at [email protected].
ONE LUCKY GUY
One of our own Blue Max members, Lee Bergstedt, won the AMA Survey Con-
test.
He won a DJI Phantom Quadcopter RTF and already has it in his hands, as of
Friday, February 7th. Look at that happy smile.
You are the first to know, as there is nothing reported on the AMA website as of
my typing this news.
I completed the survey, as I am sure many of you did, but unfortunately you don’t
see my picture here.
It pays to do these surveys. You could be a winner too!
