Report on Project Lwaly & Helping Hands(10 th to 11 th April, 2009)

Until the great mass of the people shall be filled with the sense of responsibility for eachother's welfare, social justice can never be attained.

Introduction (PG Group)

We are a small drop in the ocean. Each member of the PG Group contributes as a drop of theocean in all our actions and initiatives. Our objective is to empower our community, people, andstate by all means. We are the first online yahoogroup which is registered as Non Profit SocialOrganisation with Registrar, New Delhi. Our Aims are as follows: -

To provide a platform to all Uttarakhandis to interact with each other online where theycan share their views, thoughts and help in executing various good initiatives towards theempowerment & upliftment of the people, and community of Uttarakhand.

To help the less privileged talented children till they become self-supporting individuals.

To help shunned families live a better life in their later years.

To help people in dire straits meet their medical expenses.

To promote Uttarakhandi Culture.

Give back to society in all possible means.

Journey So far

Founded in Year 2004, PG Group has completed 5 years of successful journey. During these fiveyears, below are the important milestones achieved by the group

Project Lwaly & Project Helping Hands

Introduction

As part of the annual activity of PG Group, Project Lwaly was identified for education & socialawareness camp cum sponsorship programme for Year 2009. The roots of this initiative were sownin the year 2006, when PG Group launched its first ever social awareness camp in Puryadaang InterCollege in Pauri Garhwal. This was the first learning camp for the PG Group and met with greatsuccess. Based on the learning of Puryadaang, we had undertaken our Project II Gairsain inChamoli Garwhal & Project III Masi in Almora Region.

In current Year (i.e. 2009), PG Group aimed at closing on below mentioned projects - Project Lwaly School- Project Helping Hands

Volunteer nominations were sought from all the members for joining the Project teams and alsofunds were generated through members of the group for executing both the Projects (i.e.Scholarship Programme & Financial Support to five helpless sisters).

Project Summary

A Team comprising 9 Project Champions departed from different locations to Pauri Garhwal on 10 th

April, 2009 as per below details

The excitement of being part of the Project Team could have been felt on the face of each of theProject Champions.

Except of Dr. Juyal, Shri Bist ji, Arun & Pradeep who joined us directly in the respectivedestinations in Garhwal, rest of the team members started the journey from Delhi on 10 th morningat 7 a.m. Around 4 p.m. we reached Ghandiyal. We had two action items identified for our ProjectHelping Hands in Ghandiyal

The two agenda items we had worked out for Project Helping Hands for Village Ghandiyal were asfollows

Computer Donation to School - With the help of our esteemed member, Shri Arun Kavtiyal, we wereable to donate a computer to Saraswati Sishu Mandir School in Village Ghandiyal.

Financial Support to Helpless Sisters Through one of the group members, we came to know aboutthe dire straits of five sisters who had no source of income because of the demise of their parents.Their uncle (Tauji) is currently looking after them. We had shared the news clip to all PG membersand with the support of all the esteemed members of the group, we were able to generate fundsclose to Rs. 30,000/-. During the Project ceremony, in the presence of school kids and respectedpeople of the community including Principal and teachers, a cheque of Rs. 30,000/- was handedover to eldest sister (Seema). Gram Pradhan was also requested to ensure the proper utilization of the given amount to avoid any misuse of the same.

Both the assignments were completed on 10 th April, 2009. Since we were to visit Lwaly School on11 th , we had overnight stay at residence of Shri K. S. Rawat.

Project Lwaly

Early in the morning on 11 th April, 2009, we re-started our journey from the residence of Shri K. S.Rawat and after covering a distance of close to 40 kms., reached Lwaly School in GagwarshyunPatti.

School Management welcomed all of us and then we spend considerable amount of time withPrincipal discussing about the progress of school and students. We also shared background of PG

Group with the principal.

The school management had organized a small welcome ceremony for us which started with theSaraswati Vandana followed by Lok Geet and a performance by the school students.

Post welcome ceremony & cultural programme, Principal of the school, Shri Nawani ji addressed toall the school students and also introduced PG Group to all the students, teachers and parents &elderly citizens.

The activities undertaken by the PG Project Team in the school are listed below

1. The first introductory session was taken by Shri K. S. Rawat, who shared the groups detailswith all students and respected teachers and parents.

2. Rajiv Naithani took over the next Session on Education & Motivation. Rajiv shared hisexperiences and various examples with the students and tried motivating them. Students

Important Highlights of the Camp

- Cash Awards were distributed to 3 bright students who grabbed top three ranks in theschool in their high school examinations o 1st Prize was given to Master Ankit Sajwan (Rs. 1000/- Cash was handed over to

Ankit)o 2nd Prize was given to Kumari Anuradha Negi (Rs. 600/- Cash was handed over to

Anuradhao 3rd Prize was given to Kumari Mohini Negi (Rs. 400/- Cash was handed over to

Mohini)

- A contest was initiated in the school through principal for which Shri J. S. Bist handedover a cash amount of Rs. 1500/- for distribution to students for their outstandingresponses.

- Dr. Juyal & Shri Bist spent considerable time in visiting various villages during their stayin Uttarkhand and tried educating villagers on aspects like Education of Children,Possibilities of new Economic Activities, Approach of Community Living & utility of Small States, Family Planning, Poultry, Dairy Development, Rural Tourism,Horticulture, Environment Protection & Sanitation, Water Conservation andRain Water Harvesting.

Scholarship Programme

Below mentioned three schools participated in the scholarship programme initiated by the PGGroup

1. Janta Inter College, Lwaly2. Girls High School, Lwaly3. Government High School, Ujyari

Among the identified needy students from three different schools, we have selected 12 students(i.e. 7 JIC Lwaly, 3 GHS Lwaly, & 2 GHS Ujyari) for the scholarship programme for Year 2009-10.We had conducted a simple general knowledge / basic English test accordingly to the standards of the students under scholarship programme. PG Group takes pride in announcing that below havebeen selected for scholarship programme for the academic year 2009-10:

The following heads are being covered under our scholarship programme

a. Tuition Fees for 12 monthsb. Booksc. Stationery Itemsd. School uniform & shoese. Board fee (wherever applicable)

On the student sponsorship, PG Group is in the process of sending the scholarship amount to theidentified students through school principal, who will take further action accordingly.

Feedback on the Projects

On both of the completed Projects, we sought feedback from Principal & Respected people of thecommunity. We are pleased to share with you all that the entire camp was appreciated well by theprincipal, school faculty and localities of the Villages. The Principal also extended sincere thanks

to the Project Lwaly Task Force Team for holding the valuable sessions for motivating andencouraging the students in the school.

Tour Expenses

The cost arising on account of transportation was absorbed by the PG Group. The cost of meals wasborne by individuals who visited the camp. The cost of meals and other expenses per head wasaround Rs. 500/- only.

The task force team members also spent Rs. 3200/- from their own pockets towards lodging andboarding expenses.
