In the world of design, journeyingin some way, shape or formis a constant. The turn around a showroom corner can lead to an inspiring discovery. An architectural structure rising from the landscape might spur a Moleskine full of ideas. From early September through late June, the pace in our industry is rapid-fire with fresh introductions in textiles, furniture, lighting, home accents and materials. To a large extent, this is what stimulates us, excites us, and nudges the design zeitgeist along.

If ever there was a time to decelerate though, it is summer, when the pace slackens and so many escape to far-flung places (Will everyone be shopping in Europe this summer? Seems so). Taking a journeywhether its as modest as transitioning from your living room to the backyard for an afternoon, or more elaborate, as in two weeks overseasfurther encourages the design dialogue. For those of us with a desire to remain curious, and sweep through life with a fine-tuned eye, the adventure never stops.

Alessandra Branca is a renowned interior designer and perennial pot stirrer (specializing in a mean Carbonara sauce), who calls both New York and Chicago home.

2 THE STYLIST KELLY FRAMELWhats happening?There is so much cultural mashup right nowwhether in music, fashion, art or interiorsthat we are seeing some of the most innovative style mixology in history. New media has made everything available, all at the same time, and there isnt a single genre not exploring this accessibility.

Having a moment:Studio Job is super interesting; the way they are interpreting totemic heraldry in such a classical but irreverently Pop-art way seems to really refl ect the age we are living in.

Cant get enough ofComme des Garons. The brand is endlessly exciting, from its runway shows to its retail model. Theres nothing cooler than the experience of shopping the collection at Dover Street Market or at their pop-up shops.

Up next:My partner, Zachary Lynd, and I are in the process of launching Kizmet, a collaborative creative agency. Were working on a large-scale experiential shopping bazaar at the moment, curating and designing a truly unique experience that aims to break down the divides between retail, art and theater.

1 THE INTERIOR DESIGNER ALESSANDRA BRANCAWhat is the absolute best part of your job?I love that theres still so very much to explore in the world of design. I like to delve into new eras and genres and learn all I can, and then move onto something completely di erent. Theres inspiration everywhere.

In your closet:My Kelly and Birkin bags by Herms are the most prized items in my wardrobe. Ive had them for over 30 years and I never tire of them.

Design pet peeve:No one should ever adopt a style that is not their ownyoull end up living someone elses life. Do what is right for you.

Ones to watch:I love the landscape architecture coming from the fi rm of Phoenix-based Allison Colwell and Michele Shelor. The companys portfolio is fi lled with beautiful creations spearheaded by these two extremely creative women.

On your shelf:My favorite design book is A House is Not a Home by Bruce Weber. I turn to it again and again.

Color palette of the moment:People are going bold with pastels, introducing them in unexpected places like on lacquered tables, mirrors and art.

Welcome trend:Ive been so amazed and pleased that my clients lately seem to be opting for smaller homes. More and more, its becoming about quality over quantity of space. Theres an increased focus on things being well-built and meticulously designed.

I own a ridiculous amount of...Pretty much everything! My home is in need of some serious editing, but Im a sentimental fool, and I have a lot of trouble learning to let go!

3 the artist jenna snyder-phillipsWhats intriguing you now in art? I was trained in interior design before I made the jump to painting, so I love when art is engaged with its environment.

having a moment: Dustin Yellin definitely seems to be everywhere I look lately. His sculpture series with the New York City Ballet as part of their ongoing artist series was amazing, as was his recent installation at Armory Arts Week.

hot in new york: Im so excited about the recent reopening of

the Whitney and its new Renzo Piano building. One of the first major exhibitions in fall will feature Frank Stella, which should be amazing.

Keep an eye on: In addition to my painting, I do ceramics in my free time, so I love artists like Ann Agee, Francesca DiMattio and Shio Kusaka who incorporate the medium into their practices. South African ceramic artist Lauren Gelgor Kaplan is incredibly talented and one to watch out for, too. The things she can do with clay are beyond my comprehension.

Worth the splurge: Ive had my eye on the Dino floor lamp from Flair Home Collection for a while now. It is an Italian-made lamp with a white metal shade and brass legs that looks like an abstract bird. Great lighting is key to creating ambience, so its a must-have. Its like a jewelry accessory for your interiors.

On the horizon: Theres something about sculpture and the idea of bringing art to life in 3D that truly appeals to me. Plus, Ive always wanted to try working in bronze. Id love to take on a new challenge in addition to my work in charcoal and sumi ink.

Artist Jenna Snyder-Phillips approaches her signature works with a former interior designers perspective, crafting pieces that feel wonderfully at home at home. Her dream collaboration would be working with a handbag company like Milly on a line of special-edition purses.

4 the entrepreneur jOhn edelmanOne to watch: I have always been obsessed with the work of designer Piero Lissoni. I fall in love with everything he does and am beyond excited for Design Within Reach to launch a new collection with him later this year.

Whats trending? The Brooklyn design scene is currently having a moment. The artisans who have made a home for themselves in the city are being discovered around the world, and history will remember them as having been a part of The Brooklyn Movement.

Favorite items in inventory: I love the Ven collection by Jens Risom and Chris Hardy because the meeting of a midcentury master and an up-and-coming designer to create a timeless piece may never happen again. I also love the new Morrison collection from Egg Collective. I can revel in the self-closing cabinets all day.

shop til you drop: My wife Bonnie and I always try to hit up our favorite antiques stores when were in town, including Lobel Modern, Mantiques Modern and Patrick Parrish. Then, we like to follow it up with dinner at Boqueria or drinks at my old favorite, Felix in SoHo.

Current inspiration: I am so excited about what is coming out of the minds of the newest group of designers who are changing our view of American design, prolific makers like Brad Ascalon and Rich Brilliant Williing. I am humbled by their limitless creativity.

Go-to summer event: The Annual Summer Party at architect Philip Johnsons The Glass House in New Canaan is not to be missed. Theres nothing like it.

recent design splurge: The newest addition to my home is a set of four wonderfully sculptural Eos lounge chairs. Id also very much love to own the Chieftains chair by Finn Juhl. Its a remarkable piece of furniture.

John Edelman is the CEO of modern furnishings mega-brand Design Within Reach. At his home in Connecticut, he owns a ridiculous amount of portable televisions from the 1950s, Weltron Model 2001 radios and vintage watches.

Brought together by a love of all things textile, Stacy Waggoner and Kate Reynolds teamed up to create a cutting-edge design studio offering fabrics, rugs and wallpaper motifs from top designers around the world. Now, almost a decade later, Studio Four NYC boasts some of the hottest names in textile design alongside emerging talents, with much of the duos success lying in their creative acuity for partnering with artists, innovators and risk-takers. This summer, Studio Four releases three not-to-be-missed lines that fit just that mold.

Designer-painter Rebecca Atwood first burst onto the scenepaintbrush in handcaptivating her Instagram audience one bespoke pillow and dreamy watercolor print at a time. Her artistry soon led to a partnership between Atwood and Studio Four, one that has since developed into a blooming design venture as the Cape Cod native sets to release her debut collection of hand-painted and marbleized fabrics with the studio. Her textiles are so chic and livable, says Reynolds. Be on the lookout for her wallpaper collection to launch soon.

Just when you thought leather had nothing new to offer, Brit Kleinman, of Brooklyns Avo, enters the field, proving the possibilities have only just begun: Her jaw-dropping block-printed cowhides, branded with bold, artistic patterns and daring geometrics, incorporate a touch of modernity into the timeworn material. We love leather and the luxury of something that keeps getting better with age, says Waggoner of the partnership. Brit is changing the way that people use and experience this textile.

Studio Fours next debut proves that the art of plaster isnt lost but rather in a state of renaissance thanks to Celeste Coughlin of Asterisk Designs. This doyenne of Venetian

plaster developed a specialized technique for transcribing waxed plaster onto paper, coining a perfect science to translate this ancient (and tedious) process onto a custom roll of wallpaper. We have always loved the gorgeous, creamy texture of Venetian plaster walls, says Waggoner, and when we met Celeste we knew we were destined for something great to unfold.

With all these exciting collections debuting this season, Studio Fours Chelsea showroom is the perfect spot to garner inspiration for any and all design endeavors. Design is a luxury, says Reynolds. It should always inspire and never intimidate. ph
