f i r s t g l a s sThe best way to make sure a homeowner is content, sometimes, is to give him exactly

what he wants. That’s just what Austin-based builder David Wilkes and designer

Mark Cravotta did for a glass-loving client’s bathroom remodel. “The owner is passionate

about glass tile,” says Cravotta. “He had used it in various applications throughout his

house, and I wanted to honor that.” Together, Wilkes and Cravotta produced large

sheets of stained glass, which they then cut into tiles of various widths and lengths

before cladding the walls. “The pieces were so thin and fragile,” says Wilkes. “It was a

little like handling eggshells, but it all came together beautifully.” The result is a slick,

modern backdrop that borrows interest from its complex, wood-like patina and

allows the other elements in the bathroom to take on an almost sculptural quality.

The crisp white, curvy tub from Kohler beckons, while the benches on the perimeter

encourage lounging.

“It’s about approaching the space with a sense of confidence and creating a strong personality. This bath says rich, elegant and luxurious. It makes a statement.”
