Our October luncheon at the Du Jour Restaurant of the Arizona Culinary Institute was once again a huge success. We were there last year and by popular demand, our Luncheon and Program Chairs (Kathy Rose, Nancy Gray, Michael Heglaw, Lin Felix) decided to treat us again to a great luncheon experience. Our December program features well known local Phoenix performer, Dee Winberry, who will be entertaining us with songs and music of the season.

Jane Ann George has been volunteering with Florence Crittenton for 18 years! Norma Huhn recently relocated to Moon Valley from San Diego and is interested in meeting other members. Marcia Balestrino completed a 33 day tour of the Rocky Mountain National Parks this summer. Susan Altieri was a majorette in high school and college!

The Club kicked off the fall season last month with a fabulous luncheon

at the Arizona Culinary Institute’s Du Jour Restaurant in

Scottsdale. Du Jour acts as a “classroom” for students attending the

Arizona Culinary Institute, providing them with the opportunity to learn all

aspects of delivering the fine dining experience, including hosting,

serving, cooking and baking.

Our members were treated to a three-course meal with a demonstration

by head chef, James Baker, on how to make Bananas Foster.

Not only was the food delicious, but by all accounts, the students earned

an A+ on all other aspects of the fine dining experience.

We recommend you treat yourself, friends and family to a meal at Du

Jour for any special occasion or during the holidays.

Lucky door prize winners were awarded glass droplet bird feeders from

the Southwest Gardener.

Garden Club News:

The group visited Green Goddess Nursery on Bell Road last month. It was a beautiful day to wander around the large, well arranged

nursery, and the group was pleasantly entertained by the rescued Macaw parrots who

were very curious.

Green Goddess is known for its extensive displays of pottery,

fountains and decorative statuary, and our group saw many unique

designs. Thanks to Vicki Lamb for arranging the tour!

The Hard Cover Girls Book Club has a few openings left. The

group meets the 4th Monday of every month at 11:00 a.m. Discussions typically last no more than 90 minutes, and selected books are easily obtained from local libraries, book stores or downloaded to your reading device. This month’s selection is The Great Alone, a new novel by Kristin Hannah, which follows a family as they move to the harsh wilderness of 1970s Alaska, and is inspired by the author’s personal experiences. If you’d like to join this book group, contact Jackie Isbell at [email protected].

Wine Night - A Stroll Through Piedmont Thank you to Nancy and Mike Gray for taking the wine group for a stroll through Italy’s Piedmont and tasting some delicious wines from the region. This area of Italy is cupped by the Alps to the North and the Apennines to the south, and its morning fog and sunny afternoons make for great wines. The most common reds include Nebbiolo, Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, and Dolcetto. Some of the most popular whites are Moscato Bianco, Cortese,

and Arneis. Our group got to sample four top wines: 1. Mauro Sebaste Parigi; 2. Langhe Nebbiolo; 3. Lo Zoccolaio Barbera; and 4. Travaglini Gattinara. What a great night spent with friends and good wine!

The Matinee Friends activity

group attended the first concert of the fall season, “Autumn Pleasures” at ASU’s Temple Center of the Arts on October 17. After we finally negotiated the parking nightmare (construction has greatly disrupted the parking on campus), we settled into our second-row seats just in time to experience the wonderful singing of the four ASU choruses: the Arizona Statesmen, the Women’s Chorus, the Barrett Choir, and the Gospel Choir. After enjoying the music, our group left with happy smiles. If you’re interested in joining

this group, please contact Carol Janoff at [email protected].

This year Giving Tuesday falls on November 27th. MVWC encourages our members to help others through the gift of time, donations, or voice. At the same time, we wish to recognize all the people and businesses that support our organization and our Service Projects. Check out our website at www.mvwomensclub.org

for more information and to learn how our members contribute to our community throughout the year, and ways that you can too!

Welcome to our first travelogue! This month’s journey comes from Nancy Gray,

who recently traveled to the Piedmont region of Italy. If you have an interesting

travel story to share, please forward your details and photos to Angela Baumann at

[email protected].

Everyone knows Italy for its incredible Roman artifacts,

art collections from the Vatican to Florence, shopping in

Milan, Venetian gondolas, and Tuscan wines and

culinary delights, but few people have experienced the

hidden treasure of the Langhe Valley, the Piedmont area

of northwest Italy.

My husband and I “stumbled” onto this incredible gem upon winning a trip

to Italy and a stay at the exclusive Il Boscareto Resort located in the

medieval town of Serralunga d’alba (population 535). Located in the rolling

hills of Barolo vineyards, Serralunga is home to the Castle of Serralunga

d’Alba, a 14th century castle that majestically towers over the small town

and vineyards. After a week of crowds and lines in Rome and Florence, we

spent five tranquil days in this lovely hideaway with friends. Every morning

we’d get up early and stroll through the vineyards and narrow winding

streets of Serralunga, then explore surrounding medieval castles and quaint

villages, and top that off with an early lunch and wine tasting at a local

winery. Afternoons were spent back at the resort for spa time and relaxing

on the grounds of the resort (with a glass of local wine in hand, of course).

And the most amazing surprise was the culinary genius of this region, from

the two star Michelin restaurant at the resort to the local Mom and Pop

restaurants located on the surrounding hilltops. Every meal was an

adventure, since many residents speak little English, we had no idea what

we were eating most of the time! The traditional “peasant food” is so

delicious! Beyond its bold Barolo and Barberesco wines, the region is

known for white truffles (diamonds of the kitchen). Our only regret is that we

didn’t have a chance to experience truffle hunting, since our trip took place

in the spring. Oh, well, a very good excuse to make our way back for a visit!

Where have you been?

Service Project Committee Update:

How many members remember the very first fundraiser that Moon Valley Women’s Club held? It was a garage sale, held in the mid 90’s, and the event raised a few hundred dollars. Fast forward to 2018, to our most recent event, where our auction proceeds and individual donations added up to more than fourteen THOUSAND dollars! All this amazing growth has occurred because of the remarkable dedication and efforts of MVWC members throughout the years. Because of the sustained growth of our available charitable funds the MVWC Board decided in June to form an Ad Hoc committee to review and update the Special Projects processes. The committee met regularly throughout the summer and into the fall, working with three goals in mind. The first goal is to formalize the procedures the MVWC uses to distribute the charitable funds. Second is to involve more members in the operation and decision process of the distribution of the funds. And finally, to provide an opportunity for our club members to sponsor a local group for consideration of a small grant. In the committee’s efforts to achieve our ultimate goals, MVWC has registered with the State of Arizona as a public charity and received a federal identification number in preparation for applying for federal non-profit status as a 501(c)(3). We anticipate completing our goals by the first of the year. The Special Project committee has been, and will continue, regularly reporting to the board and members through this newsletter. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Heglaw at [email protected].

Once again, MVWC is adopting 30 families from Sunnyslope K-8 school. After purchasing, sorting and wrapping the items, everything will be delivered to the school for distribution to the families. Any monetary donations will be used to buy bikes, clothing and other items. Please join us in our largest service

project of the year, and help make the holidays bright for 30 needy families. Please review the list of activities below and contact Sandi Kogan at 602-375-1433 or [email protected] to indicate how you want to help. If you prefer to make a monetary donation or a gift assignment, that will also be greatly appreciated!

Got Communications or Marketing Skills? The Moon Valley Women’s Club is looking for volunteers to form an ad hoc committee to begin work on a Communications Plan. This group will determine the organization’s future communications / marketing needs, create a plan, and, with Board approval, implement it. It’s anticipated that the committee will meet twice monthly for approximately six months. The club has made exciting changes this year, including the roll out of our website and there’s more to come. Join us as we continue to improve the club’s communications to members and the community at large. If you are interested, or have experience with communications and/or marketing, please contact Kristin Carkeek at (602) 690-3459 or [email protected] for more information. We hope to have a committee in place by November 11, to begin working right away.

Sneak Peek!

February Luncheon &

Annual Auction

Feb 14, 2019 at

Moon Valley Country Club

This event is our biggest

fundraiser of the year, and

you don’t want to miss it!

Desert Mission Food Bank Food Drive: Our club is proud to have partnered

with Desert Mission many years, providing non-perishable food donations, and our

annual food drive will soon be underway again! The top five most needed food

items are: canned vegetables/fruit, canned soups/stews, pasta/rice, peanut butter

and canned tuna/meat. According to Desert Mission, statistics show:

▶ Currently 1 in 4 children and 1 in 5 adults in Arizona live in poverty.

▶ 1 in 6 Arizonans are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next

meal will come from.

▶ Nearly 2 million Arizonans are considered working poor, living at or below 100

percent of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). This equates to an annual household

income of $22,350 or less for a family of four.

▶ Food insufficiency in Arizona is a direct result of an inadequate living wage: 74

percent of emergency food clients live at or below 100% of poverty level.

▶ 43 percent of clients were forced to choose between paying for food or paying

for shelter.

Desert Mission helps combat hunger by bridging nutrition gaps that negatively

affect the health and well-being of local residents in need. In 2017, 36,529 people

received nutrition assistance from Desert Mission, including 11,452 infants and

children.

Non-perishable food donations can be brought to the December Luncheon on

December 13th, or beginning December 5th, items can be left at Lin Felix’s home

(218 W. Braeburn Drive), in her front courtyard – no need to ring the bell.

For more information, contact Karin Schardt, Food Drive Coordinator, at

[email protected] or 602-402-0506. Thank you for your support!
