CLCA Kern County Chapter August 2012 • 3

This year’s Fall Home and Garden Show, the largest of the year, will be held at theKern County Fair Grounds on Friday,Saturday and Sunday, October 19-21. Thelocal Kern County Chapter of CLCA willbe manning a booth to educate residentialhomeowners who contract with Land-scape Professionals on the advantages ofhiring licensed landscape contractors. In addition to being there to answerquestions, one of our best marketing toolsis distributing the list of current Chaptermembers to the public.

The California Landscape ContractorsAssociates (CLCA) Kern County Chaptersupports consumer protection againstunlicensed operators. One of our primarygoals is to educate the public about thedangers of working with unlicensedcontractors. Our membership believesthat when all contractors are licensed itwill raise the bar in terms of quality andethics for everyone!

As part of our mission to serve andprotect the interests of our members and

promote professionalism, Kern CountyCLCA endeavors to direct homeownersand residential clients to use onlylicensed contractors.

Statewide, CLCA has supported twobills in the State Legislature that wouldprevent fraudulent use of a contractor’slicense number or name. This legilsationincreases fines and jail terms for offendersand allows courts to order a person con-victed of unlicensed contracting to returnmoney received for work performed.

This year Dale Edwards, the Sultan ofSod from Old River Sod, and LindsayOno, the Plant Professor from BakersfieldCollege, will be doing something new.Of course, they will be throwing bags ofcompost to the crowd, and everyoneknows Dale can’t go 15 minutes withouttalking about turf. This year, they willalso be throwing seed packets to theaudience then teaching every one how toprepare their garden for winter.

Our Chapter is looking for volunteersto man the CLCA Kern County booth. We

will have an ongoing looped video of ourBeautification Award Winners and otherpromotions of our events. Manning thebooth gives a business owner an opportu-nity to meet potential residential clienteleand hand out their cards. Sign up for atime slot by contacting Megan Rios [email protected] or 661-835-9259.

On November 6, the general election willtake place throughout this nation. Withthe presidency in play, many will bedrawn to cast their vote to determine whowill occupy that office. There will also beother decisions to be made at the polls onthat date. Along with voting for severalstate and federal representatives, therewill be a number of Statewide BallotMeasures to weigh in on.

The CLCA state legislative committeehas reviewed the propositions to deter-mine if any of them impact the interestsof CLCA members. One of these, Proposi-tion 32, warrants a closer look.

Proposition 32 is meant to ban bothcorporate and labor union contributionsto state and local political candidates andballot measures. The measure would stopthe collection of automatic payroll deduc-tions from employees and union membersthat are then used to contribute to aselected politician without regard for thepolitical views of the employees whoprovide the funds. Payroll-deducted dues

are organized labor’s main vehicle forraising political cash. This measurewould not prohibit employees frommaking voluntary political contributions.Prop 32 would also prohibit contributionsby government contractors to the politi-cians who control contracts awarded tothem.

The purpose of this proposition is tolimit the overwhelming influence thatspecial interests have, through politicalcampaign contributions, on how govern-ment operates. In general, the specialinterest groups have a great deal ofcontrol over the bills that are passed ordefeated at the state level.

By definition, LLC (Limited LiabilityCorporation) businesses would be im-pacted by this measure. Business fundsfrom those entities would not be allowedto be used as political contributions.Instead, an individual would have to useprivate funds for contributions. There issupport for the measure recognizing thatthe public would benefit by weakening

the power of special interest groups. The CLCA recognizes that LandPAC,

the California Landscape ContractorsAssociation’s Political Action Committee, would be impacted by this measure. Itspurpose is to raise funds from the land-scape industry for use in supportingqualified candidates for political office. If Prop 32 is passed, it is unclear if Land-PAC funds raised before the electionwould be restricted from being used forpolitical purposes.

With that said, it will be up to ourmembers to decide how to vote on thisballot measure. If there are any questionsregarding this issue, please feel free tocontact me at (661) 835-9259. All com-ments or suggestions are welcome.

Here in the valley, the summer monthsbring longer days and excessive heat. Thecombination of these two things can causethe dreaded brown spots in turf areas. These problem spots can pop up in yourturf quickly and unexpectedly. We haveall had to deal with them at some point, but what is the best way to avoid them?

Most brown spots may be the result ofimproper coverage from your irrigationsystem. First, check to be sure you havehead to head coverage -- you want thewater from one sprinkler to land on the

top of the adjacent sprinkler. Second, con-sider that time and wear can take theirtoll on sprinkler heads, and it may betime to replace some of the heads. Whenthe occasional sprinkler head is damagedduring routine lawn care, or gets plugged,be sure to replace the nozzle or sprinklerwith a uniform part. Why? When a mixedgroup of sprinklers are used, inadequatecoverage may occur.

Another cause of brown spots can benot adjusting your sprinkler controller forthe warmer summer months. As the days

heat up, the water needs of your turf areawill increase. One way to increase thetime is to use the seasonal adjust on yourcontroller. By adjusting this up and downyou will achieve a percentage increase ordecrease of time on the controller.

An even easier way to adjust yourcontroller for the season is to use a smartcontroller. A smart controller is an irriga-tion timer that will automatically adjustthe run time on your timer based on thetemperature outside.

Another device that can be helpful indetermining your landscape’s water needsis a water sensor like the Base Line S-100.This irrigation tool will monitor themoister in the soil. As the soil drys out, itwill sense that more moisture is required, and send a message to your timer. Thetimer will then irrigate your turf giving itthe amount of water it requires.

Any of these valuable tools can helpmanage and resolve the dreaded brownspots in your turf area.

If you are still not confident in troubleshooting or just need a bit of advice, askone of your friendly sales associates atyour local Ewing Irrigation. We would behappy to get you pointed in the right di-rection and on your way to healthier turf.
